We went here for our parents anniversary. On the pricier side but during happy hour or for special occasion should be good. We ordered nachos, made with potato chips which was surprisingly good and not too salty They had a different seasoning which made it more nice Seafood boil was a big portion had mussels, corn, lobster, crab, potatoes, and shrimp everything was a nice combination we liked the soup underneath as well Raw oysters are hard to miss, fresh Good service as well. Big place and nice ambience. read more

Modern rustic feel with brick and booths. Quite large inside when they open the back half, but still cozy and dark inside. They have 2 patios. Server was great. Steaks were perfectly cooked. The chowder although full of seafood missed the mark. You could not taste the seafood: maybe put the seafood in last to retain flavour. All I tasted was a milk dill sauce. Would appeal to white collar crowd. Close to the cruise ships. read more

We enjoyed the lobster roll and fish tacos. Sat at the bar because other seating was full - reservations are recommended! It was a fun, casual atmosphere and a bit on the pricy side. read more

Had a nice dinner at the bar - had their fresh lobster with potato salad. The potato salad was out of this world - highly recommend it.

One of the better seafood venues in C'town. Great cozy vibe, helpful staff and great selection of appys and entrees. Check out the oyster special at Happy Hour. read more

The service was really nice. I came here literally for the fresh shucked oysters. They have a deal daily for $20 you get 10 oysters. The oysters were definitely fresh on arrival. The menu items also had very good selections. If I get a second chance to come here, I would definitely order their mains as everything looked delicious. The restaurant is nicely decorated with Parisian themed upscale vibes. read more

Merchantman came recommended by the hotel I was staying at, and seemed pretty popular with its street-side patio and neighbouring 'next door' patio. I opted to stay inside and went with the Open-Faced Steak Sandwich ($24) with a side of potato salad, which for its price point, is good value for a 6-oz sirloin. While the steak was cooked perfectly to my preferred doneness, the steak seemed to lack any sort of seasoning before the cook. And the same goes for the potato salad, which could've been creamier or used some more mustard or herbs. Food came in a timely manner and service-wise, there were regular check-ins. Again, for $24, it was pretty reasonable for lunch which was good, but not great. read more

Had a great lunch at this spot in August. The server was great - very friendly and was knowledgeable about the menu. We requested a table at the window and the hostess was very accommodating. The lobster rolls here are great. Do get them. read more

The servers have sticks rammed so high up their asses. Bad attitudes and poor service.

Awesome PEI mussels. Great oysters on half shell. Secret special condiment accompanies it. Forget the tarter or Tabasco sauce! Shuckin' Around drink was excellent. Service superb. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant, with friendly service and a delicious variety of foods. I recommend the calamari, it's well seasoned and crispy. Surf and turf was perfection, and the crab legs were very fresh! Great selection of desserts, sticky bread pudding was amaaaazing. I ate here 3x in the week I stayed in Charlottetown, and will definitely return again on my next visit to PEI. read more

The service was great even tho the restaurant was very busy. The new potatoes were cooked to perfection and seasoned well. The fried fish sandwich on sourdough was one of the best I've ever had. Lots of topping with fresh flavors that mixed very well together. The restaurant itself was very comfortable and had outdoor dining. There was no loud music so it's nice for a quiet meal! read more

Merchantman is definitely a Murphy Restaurant staple especially in the summer months with the fantastic patio and solid drink menu with cocktails and local brews. The menu is straight forward and simple, offering some essential seafood options especially for those vacationing here, and some other yummy staples for the other tastes. Great salads, fun potato chip nachos, and solid entrees and Sammy's like fried chicken, lobster dinner, chowders, burgers, steaks, bowls and smoked salmon wraps. Sadly the gluten free options are lacking (I have a Celiac friend) as they use one fryer so things like fries and nachos cant be GF but they do offer GF bread/buns. Overall, always a solid spot to catch up with friends, enjoy the patio sunshine, and eat some good food! read more

Waited at the host stand while multiple servers walked by, including a young man who made eye contact and kept walking. After a few minutes I walked around the corner, saw the same man and asked if there was a host. He said yes. It turned out it was him. He told us to sit outside and he would be right out. Waited 10 minutes, he no showed. We left. Don't bother going here. Lots of great food with equally great service in this town. read more

Be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait for your food. We finally walked out after waiting more than an hour for our food. Four people sitting nearby did the same. Would not go back. I ordered eight oysters and a small Caesar salad. My dinner companion ordered an appetizer of PEI mussels and an entrée. It took about 20 minutes to get the oysters (they only brought six) and the mussels. After one hour we gave up on getting other food and asked for our check. We asked if the food always took so long and our waitperson said it did.. No manager came out to find out why we were leaving without our food or to apologize and our wait person acted as though this was standard practice at this restaurant. read more

The Fish n Chips were very good. The lobster roll was so so. Mashed lobster on top of a couple whole small pieces. Wasn't worth it especially in a hot dog bun. Noisy restaurant. read more

7:30 pm. Unapologetic hostess chomping on her chewing gum.... "We are full and we don't have a waiting list." Moved on to a different restaurant where the waiting staff was accommodating and fun...and the food and drinks good..so being shooed away from here was a blessing in disguise. read more

Ordered through Uber eats so unable to comment on ambiance and service. The chowder is very well done, seasoned well, and generous with seafood. The fish and chips were not bad. The island burger was big but was dry, wished there was more sauce and more fresh patty. Ordered spinach salad as well, and was charged for it, but was missing so didn't get to try it. Overall, definitely would get the chowder again, would skip the burger and check for missing items. read more

PEI is our last point for our trip. First night we came to this spot for our dinner. We tried fish and chips, nachos and fried calamari. The nachos and calamari for starters are very delicious. Nachos are made with chips. The seasoning is on the spot. Maybe it's because close to the sea. But calamari is very fresh. The fish and chips are well seasoned too. Overall. Good for a first time visit. read more

I hate to write a bad review on anyone's business but this one deserves one. So let's start with the positive. The food was not bad but way to expensive for what we received. The atmosphere is very nice and inviting. The hostess was very nice. The waiter was ok. She failed when things got hard and uncomfortable and did not own the situation I am about to describe. The 4 of us sat down and ordered our drinks, appetizers, and food at the same time. The drinks and appetizers came out quick and then the waiting started. After about 25 minutes we asked the waitress when our food was coming, she said soon and we did not see her again until the food came 20 mins later. At 30 minutes my wife went and talked to the manager and he was trying to explain why the food was taking so long. He indicated they were busier than usual and the kitchen was backed up. The people next to use sat down after us and got there food in 20 mins so that excuse doesn't hold water. My wife gave him 10 mins to get the food out or we are leaving. It came in 9. We closed our tab with no "I am sorry for the delay and we ruined your meal" from the waiter or the manager. We received ZERO compensation for the delay and the warm beer. We paid and we left. I will make sure to let the Delta hotel know what happened. Avoid this restaurant. There are a lot of other restaurants in the area that will provide better service and better value for your money. read more

Fish and chips: My dad liked it! The ketchup and tartar sauce seemed to be homemade, they were particularly tasty. Lobster roll: Yummy succulent lobster. We got a side of baby red potatoes which weren't my favorite (firm and not super flavorful) but my mom liked them Sticky date pudding: Sooo good, highly recommend!! The warm toffee sauce was stunning Service: The restaurant wasn't busy, so service was fast. Our server Jeff was friendly and attentive :) read more

Most disappointing. We waited well over a hour for our food to be served, then learned that both the head chef and sous chef were not working that evening. Not the best thing to happen after coming up to PEI to have mussels at the source. We were comped for part of the meal, but the restaurant should have been closed when the key members of the staff were not there. read more

We stopped by here on our first night in Charlottetown as it was one of the few seafood places open late. We opted to try the seafood boil and it was soooo good!! There was a very large lobster, mussels, soft shell clams, scallops, crab clusters, corn and potatoes. The portion size was very large. The dish was shared between 2 and it was more than enough. Unfortunately, we overestimated ourselves and didn't finish it all. We ended up paying just over $100 after tax and tips for this dish. Would definitely come here again, maybe tackle it with a group of 3. Service was also exceptional. read more

We arrived in PEI for a four day visit, we initially walked across the street to have lunch at the Merchantmen, we were not disappointed, the service was good, food was above average. I'd like to congratulate the person who hired the female staff . We haven't tried another restaurant, no need, I highly recommend any of the seafood entrees. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

We went here for dinner on our first night after arriving in Charlottetown. The restaurant was full so we got seated at their lounge next door. It was a little more private and quiet. The menu was the same so it was the better option for us. Service was amazing!! We decided to go with the pan fried haddock and haddock tacos. Both meals were really good and portions were perfect. We would definitely come back on our next visit! read more

Slow table service, so allow extra time. Good food, friendly service. Prices are affordable compared to US prices.

The seafood is ok and the servers are almost nowhere. Went here because a local said it had the best seafood during the winter months. I hope this isn't true. The food is just ok. The food services your desire for PEI seafood but you feel sorry for the experience. The chowder is just good. The mussels are at least good. The lobster roll is just horrible and full of things the sandwich doesn't need more of. As for the staff, put in your order as soon as they ask for it otherwise you will not see them again for 10 minutes. When they bring your food order any extra drinks or ask for water because you won't see them for 15 minutes after finished eating and waiting to ask for a check. They check will also take forever so don't be in a rush. read more

When you look at the Yelp rating - this one may not jump out at you.. but it was really amazing for us ! It was a very nice atmosphere, the chairs were amazingly comfy, There was an ENTIRE Gluten Free menu !!!! We are not talking your average GF options, we are talking about Seafood Chowder, Halibut Tacos, Lobster Roll Sandwiches, and there was more and more and more to pick from ! We both have gluten and dairy issues, so it usually not easy to find menus that are this fantastic ! The rest of the menu looked great as well, and expect it to be equally satisfying. No Photos, since we ended up eating it so fast lol. read more

Very accommodating of my food allergies. Our meals were excellent and we were well taken care of!

Charlottetown is magical and this was our first trip to this lovely City for Canada's 150th! Everyone is so friendly, professional, thoughtful and the food... simply divine! Merchantman was everything and more as suggested by our concierge at Sydney Inn. Oysters, chowder and shrimp and fish tacos! Wow! The space is beautiful, all the people who greeted us...were awesome, we were so excited! The pretty blonde waitress was friendly...and then it stopped. She never returned once to ask us if our meal was ok...or ask to refill my husband's beer for over 90 mins, we had to get up to grab our own salt, and then she promised to return with pepper, which never came, so we got up to find that. By the end of our meal (which took over 90 mins) we were taking bets if she would come back to do anything! This is harsh, but we are probably the easiest couple to please...happy to spend money and tip well! The problem was there were only two tables in the entire section at 3:00 pm and she wasn't busy, just completely oblivious to the fact that she worked there! She was nice, but neither attentive nor had a memory. Unfortunately this was our worst server experience in this lovely City and quite frankly she gave a fabulous establishment that did everything right...a bad reputation. read more

The place was really cool looking. Brick walls. Large booths. Cool lighting. Again on the search for some local seafood. Chose not to have the lobster dinner. $40 and would hate to be disappointed after the last one over at Row House. So instead the wife had the Lobster roll. The mother in law and myself had the Pan Fried Haddock and my mother had the calamari and the fish and chips. The calamari was decent and cooked properly. The haddock I really liked. Seasonal vegetables were beets which I love. My wife didn't finish the lobster roll. Didn't like the flavour and it was more fillers than lobster. The fish n chips was pretty standard. I do like the haddock over the typical cod you see in Western Canada. The service was a bit slow with bringing drinks and checking to see if our meals were ok but personable. read more

Downtown Charlottetown sits the Merchantman with great food and great atmosphere. It looks like they are usually busy. When checking in with the hostess she asked if we had reservations. We didn't but fortunately they had a table available. After being seated the service was hit and miss. She was very polite and helpful when we did see her. A fresh bread basket with apple cinnamon butter is brought to each table. Delicious! We also split the crab cakes appetizer. Fresh crab melded together lightly lying in a creamy sauce. For my entree I ordered the seared scallops with broccoli & almonds and basmati rice. The broccoli and almonds were in a sweet liquid. Very unique and flavorful. I could have eaten a larger side of it but I had the delectable seared scallops before me. Fresh, sweet and all mine! The entree was one of my favorites on the island. I would absolutely order it again. Thanks to Merchantman our first meal on PEI was a success! read more

Good but not perfect. The space is very good. The foodwas tasty but not different from several other common places in PEI and for that is way over priced. I take the oysters... raw oysters served with raspberry souce! Not so good. The steak was fine but don't ask for rare ... ask for medium ... it will come rare! At the end the waitress as pressed herself the amout of tip and when i hit green in the card machine it was to late for me to decide what tip i want to leave!! For this reason 1 star!
