Merchantman came recommended by the hotel I was staying at, and seemed pretty popular with its street-side patio and neighbouring 'next door' patio. I opted to stay inside and went with the Open-Faced Steak Sandwich ($24) with a side of potato salad, which for its price point, is good value for a 6-oz sirloin. While the steak was cooked perfectly to my preferred doneness, the steak seemed to lack any sort of seasoning before the cook. And the same goes for the potato salad, which could've been creamier or used some more mustard or herbs. Food came in a timely manner and service-wise, there were regular check-ins. Again, for $24, it was pretty reasonable for lunch which was good, but not great. read more

Merchantman is definitely a Murphy Restaurant staple especially in the summer months with the fantastic patio and solid drink menu with cocktails and local brews. The menu is straight forward and simple, offering some essential seafood options especially for those vacationing here, and some other yummy staples for the other tastes. Great salads, fun potato chip nachos, and solid entrees and Sammy's like fried chicken, lobster dinner, chowders, burgers, steaks, bowls and smoked salmon wraps. Sadly the gluten free options are lacking (I have a Celiac friend) as they use one fryer so things like fries and nachos cant be GF but they do offer GF bread/buns. After a few minutes I walked around the corner, saw the same man and asked if there was a host. He said yes. It turned out it was him. He told us to sit outside and he would be right out. It took about 20 minutes to get the oysters (they only brought six) and the mussels. After one hour we gave up on getting other food and asked for our check. I hate to write a bad review on anyone's business but this one deserves one. So let's start with the positive. The food was not bad but way to expensive for what we received. The atmosphere is very nice and inviting. The hostess was very nice. The waiter was ok. She failed when things got hard and uncomfortable and did not own the situation I am about to describe. The 4 of us sat down and ordered our drinks, appetizers, and food at the same time. The drinks and appetizers came out quick and then the waiting started. After about 25 minutes we asked the waitress when our food was coming, she said soon and we did not see her again until the food came 20 mins later. At 30 minutes my wife went and talked to the manager and he was trying to explain why the food was taking so long. He indicated they were busier than usual and the kitchen was backed up. The people next to use sat down after us and got there food in 20 mins so that excuse doesn't hold water. My wife gave him 10 mins to get the food out or we are leaving. It came in 9. We closed our tab with no "I am sorry for the delay and we ruined your meal" from the waiter or the manager. We received ZERO compensation for the delay and the warm beer. We paid and we left. I will make sure to let the Delta hotel know what happened. Avoid this restaurant. There are a lot of other restaurants in the area that will provide better service and better value for your money. read more

We stopped by here on our first night in Charlottetown as it was one of the few seafood places open late. We opted to try the seafood boil and it was soooo good!! There was a very large lobster, mussels, soft shell clams, scallops, crab clusters, corn and potatoes. The portion size was very large. The dish was shared between 2 and it was more than enough. Unfortunately, we overestimated ourselves and didn't finish it all. We ended up paying just over $100 after tax and tips for this dish. The seafood is ok and the servers are almost nowhere. Went here because a local said it had the best seafood during the winter months. I hope this isn't true. The food is just ok. The food services your desire for PEI seafood but you feel sorry for the experience. The chowder is just good. The mussels are at least good. The lobster roll is just horrible and full of things the sandwich doesn't need more of. As for the staff, put in your order as soon as they ask for it otherwise you will not see them again for 10 minutes. When they bring your food order any extra drinks or ask for water because you won't see them for 15 minutes after finished eating and waiting to ask for a check. They check will also take forever so don't be in a rush. read more

It was a very nice atmosphere, the chairs were amazingly comfy, There was an ENTIRE Gluten Free menu !!!! We are not talking your average GF options, we are talking about Seafood Chowder, Halibut Tacos, Lobster Roll Sandwiches, and there was more and more and more to pick from ! We both have gluten and dairy issues, so it usually not easy to find menus that are this fantastic ! The rest of the menu looked great as well, and expect it to be equally satisfying. Charlottetown is magical and this was our first trip to this lovely City for Canada's 150th! Everyone is so friendly, professional, thoughtful and the food... simply divine! Merchantman was everything and more as suggested by our concierge at Sydney Inn. Oysters, chowder and shrimp and fish tacos! Wow! The space is beautiful, all the people who greeted us...were awesome, we were so excited! The pretty blonde waitress was friendly...and then it stopped. She never returned once to ask us if our meal was ok...or ask to refill my husband's beer for over 90 mins, we had to get up to grab our own salt, and then she promised to return with pepper, which never came, so we got up to find that. By the end of our meal (which took over 90 mins) we were taking bets if she would come back to do anything! This is harsh, but we are probably the easiest couple to please...happy to spend money and tip well! The problem was there were only two tables in the entire section at 3:00 pm and she wasn't busy, just completely oblivious to the fact that she worked there! She was nice, but neither attentive nor had a memory. Unfortunately this was our worst server experience in this lovely City and quite frankly she gave a fabulous establishment that did everything right...a bad reputation. read more

Chose not to have the lobster dinner. $40 and would hate to be disappointed after the last one over at Row House. So instead the wife had the Lobster roll. The mother in law and myself had the Pan Fried Haddock and my mother had the calamari and the fish and chips. The calamari was decent and cooked properly. The haddock I really liked. Seasonal vegetables were beets which I love. My wife didn't finish the lobster roll. Didn't like the flavour and it was more fillers than lobster. The fish n chips was pretty standard. I do like the haddock over the typical cod you see in Western Canada. The service was a bit slow with bringing drinks and checking to see if our meals were ok but personable. read more

Downtown Charlottetown sits the Merchantman with great food and great atmosphere. It looks like they are usually busy. When checking in with the hostess she asked if we had reservations. We didn't but fortunately they had a table available. After being seated the service was hit and miss. She was very polite and helpful when we did see her. A fresh bread basket with apple cinnamon butter is brought to each table. Delicious! We also split the crab cakes appetizer. Fresh crab melded together lightly lying in a creamy sauce. For my entree I ordered the seared scallops with broccoli & almonds and basmati rice. The broccoli and almonds were in a sweet liquid. Very unique and flavorful. I could have eaten a larger side of it but I had the delectable seared scallops before me. Fresh, sweet and all mine! The entree was one of my favorites on the island. I take the oysters... raw oysters served with raspberry souce! Not so good. The steak was fine but don't ask for rare ... ask for medium ... it will come rare! At the end the waitress as pressed herself the amout of tip and when i hit green in the card machine it was to late for me to decide what tip i want to leave!! For this reason 1 star! A burger so good I had to photograph it! Stumbled across The Merchantman Pub this afternoon during a great day in Charlottetown. First off I was shocked at the size of this place it's big, but still has great charm - cool art on the walls, good music (IMO) etc. Parents - they don't have a kids menu, but offered chicken fingers with fries or salad (that was not on the menu) to my daughter. She went with the homemade soup of the day, chicken vegetable -fantastically fresh, loads of white meat chicken and veggies. My wife had chicken toddies - which I can best describe as blackened chicken in an egg roll type batter, with a side caesar salad - both very tasty. I left the best for last - the east west burger... I have to admit that I was a little put off when the server said "no substitutions" to this award winning burger - but she guaranteed I would love it! I'm going to break it down by layer as it was that amazing: 1 - bottom bun 2 - Asian slaw tossed in delicious wasabi mayo 3 - 3 strips thick cut crispy bacon 4 - a 1/4 pound patty perfectly cooked through then brushed with a terriaki glaze 5 - roasted red pepper relish 6 - pickled ginger 7 - the perfect amount of lettuce 8 - top bun This burger was a slice of awesome... Even my wife had food envy. You have to try it... The pics do not do it justice... An amazing flavor sensation in each bite. Top it off with great service - ice cold beer... My wife and I arrived in Charlottetown around 9pm on a Thursday, and grabbed dinner at a place close to our hotel (Merchantman was recommended). We started with the Spinach and Cheese Dip, which came with both flatbread and kettle chips - some of the best spin dip I've had. My wife ordered the Pulled Pork Tacos, and got the premium side of Cheddar Bacon Potato Salad; both got thumbs up. I ordered the Island Burger along with the soup of the day (sweet potato and ginger), and enjoyed both. We finished off our meal with the Strawberry shortcake, which had baked meringue, and lemon curd - very tasty. The hostess looked a little harried when we arrived, as the dinner rush was just finishing up. Our waitress was very friendly, and provided great recommendations upon request.
