Very friendly staff and I was seated without reservations on a very busy evening. The view of the main square was wonderful although it was a warm night to eat outside. It was my first time eating horse steak and although I have nothing to compare to, it was pan seared perfectly in a delicate butter, and the mushroom sauce did complement. One of my favorite meals while in Brussels, Belgium. Like many reviewers have written -- yes it is a little touristy due to its prime location in Grand Place. 'T Kelderke translates into "the small cellar," which is precisely where we dined -- downstairs, in a rustic and cozy brick-walled environment adorned with string lights. There is outdoor seating available as well, perfect for people-watching in the beautiful main plaza. We visited on a Saturday night. The place was packed, but after about 15 minutes, we were able to snag a reserved table that didn't show up. Score! All the employees we encountered were friendly and communicative. Since the space is small, you'll likely share conversations with neighbors. We started with Grimbergen beers. Comes in two sizes, so I picked the smaller glass, which was enough for me. A complimentary bread basket was served and it was SO GOOD. Thick, with texture, but at the same time, so soft and moist. TOURIST TRAP. I should have known better since it was located directly in the square. But the reviews weren't bad, they had a few dishes we would want to try, and we were hungry and tired so we decided to chance it and I regret that we did. We got there on a Friday at around 7 and it was pretty empty. Red flag but that's my fault for not walking out then and there. We ordered the boulets (meatballs) and rabbit stew and you could tell they weren't made fresh. The food came out within 5 minutes. The meatballs were so basic. I could have made a better one myself. The rabbit was dry and I didn't care for the sauce. They come with your choice of fries (which are from frozen) and stoemp (mashed potatoes. The best part was probably the stoemp and the little side salad it came with. We wanted to use the Yelp check-in deal for a free beer, which our waitress said we could. But of course when the bill came, they tried to charge us for it. I will say that the interior of the restaurant does look pretty cool - kind of like an old Belgian monastery or something. Currently, I think they are still closed? Their website says they will reopen on 4/3/2020, but I am not sure if it is currently. I'm hoping this provides info for when they open again. They have a Yelp check-in here for a free beer. We got a beer, but they had my phone for 15 minutes and I'm getting the feeling it was given veeerry reluctantly. I wouldn't count on getting it next time. Saying this as an American, if you're looking for someplace serving regional European fare (some of them unusual), this place has options. Or specifically, they have a section of their menu for Traditionele Schotels, or Traditional Dishes, and usually seems to include few game meat options. Also, for reference, mousseline sauce is basically a Hollandaise sauce with whipped cream and meunière style fish means cooking it in a skillet with butter, lemon, and parsley. 'T Kelderke is one of the restaurants in the Grand-Place de Bruxelles (Grand Place). Specifically, it's on the southern corner of the square and, as the name translates to, is hosted in a 17th-century vault cellar. It was a genuine struggle trying to decide between sitting inside (which really was very cool looking) or outside where we get a really nice view of the square and especially the Brussels City Museum. We end up choosing outside because of how nice of a day it was. They are understandable very tourist-oriented, and we actually initially learned about it from an advertisement on the sides of some of the tour buses. But for all that they're clearly aimed to take advantage of the fact it's in a tourist hotspot, I thought their food was really alright. I think this is another of the hit-or-miss places where, when you find that one or a few dishes on the menu that suits your taste, it's PERFECT for you. However, the overall execution is fine, even in dishes you don't like. The Royal Cod with Mousseline Sauce was delicious and exactly what I wanted in a light lunch and the pork chop was so-so. The caramelized pork shank with endive salad was amazing though. That was fun. I really wish I got the chance and stomach to try their duck or rabbit. The main drawback for me is that the wait staff was a bit hard to find when sitting outside. We would have to wait for them to come out of the restaurant whenever we needed something or go inside to find someone. I also don't have a lot of confidence in the way they dealt with the Yelp offer. When I showed and asked our waitress about it, she went to talk to the manager and they were both very, very confused about it. That was a thing that involved our server asking for my phone, taking it away, then coming back around, and it being passed around between her, another waiter, and the aforementioned manager. I've seen in other reviews that this offer wasn't honored. We got the beer, but it doesn't seem like that will happen again. Its unique indoor setting is fun and its location in the Grand-Place de Bruxelles is convenient. Was in Brussels for some meetings and one of the group dinners was scheduled here. The group consisted of about 30 people so, unfortunately, we were seated upstairs instead of downstairs in the main restaurant. Everyone had preselected starters, mains and dessert choices some weeks prior. The service particularly on the starters was a little brusque as I had a salad placed in front of me and asked if that was the starter or whether everyone had a salad. Apparently the salad was one of the starter choices so my salad was removed and my correct starter of croquettes was placed. A simple question of which starter did you order would have saved a lot of hassle. Other than this issue, mains (salmon or beef) were served without issue and drinks were kept refilled. Quality of the food was very good and the ambiance, although not the same as the main dining room was acceptable with views of the Grand Place out the windows. This is a small restaurant with great food, as seen by the number of people waiting for an open table on a Thursday night. I had the pan-fried steak with fries and found the meal to be very good. I always want my steaks to be well-done, which can be a challenge sometimes. Not so here: the steak was well-done and still juicy and flavorful, a sign of a good chef. My dining companions' meals were also good. One item on the menu was "real horse steak," which might be a delicacy you wish to try. Not so for me, unfortunately. There was some bread next to the bathroom as well, I couldn't tell if the bread was going out to customers or left over/returned by customers. You'll have to choose for yourself. If you're looking for the quintessential open-air Brussels experience, look no further. Incredible views of the old town center and unparalleled ambience. Decent food, cold brews, and a time you won't forget. Even if the weather isn't as cooperative, don't hesitate to sit outside. There are umbrellas and e even blankets if things get a little wet and could m chilly. This is the place to spend your dinner in Brussels. This place is right in Grand Place, it serves Belgian food and they have very good beer. I had the mussels and fries, its Belgian staple so i had to do it. It was nice to eat something that wasn't high in fat or greasy. My boss had the rabbit stew and apparently he loves rabbit. We stopped by for dinner last night after reading some of the reviews. We got the Ghent Waterzooi and the mussels in white wine & cream sauce. The Ghent waterzooi was pretty good and worth the money. However, the mussels left much to be desired. You get a hefty amount of mussels as well as a portion of fries. The fries were delicious. The mussels were cooked with a hearty portion of celery. Unfortunately, the white wine & cream sauce was a bit bland and the mussels were highly overcooked. I've definitely had better mussels elsewhere. Group of 5 of us ate here, on the recommendation of our tour guide. We were seated very quickly, (it was around 5:30pm) and I loved the ambiance plus the space - it's an open kitchen and the red bricks ooze the patina of antiquity. Plus great selection of beers :) Two of us got the eel in green sauce, and the other choices among the diners were: salmon in tarragon sauce, mussels au gratin, and a stoemp. So, the eel in green sauce was....interesting? I love eels but the earthiness of the sauce wasn't really to my taste so while glad have tried out a local delicacy, it's something I am unlikely to order again. However props to the chef as I got tons of eel pieces :) I tasted the mussels au gratin too and wished we had just ordered the mussels in white wine, because the cheese sauce overwhelmed the mussels and they actually tasted quite bitter. The stoemp was mixed - lovely potato mash and bacon, but the sausage was too gamey and not to my taste. So overall wasn't that great, but I think it's because the food choices we made were not to our taste. Unsure if will be back. read more

Best home-made bread! Hit or miss depending on what you order. The duck and honey dish was spectacularly tender and the whipped potatoes were delightful. The mussels were old which was really disappointing. The soup was mediocre, not something I'd order next time. My first visit to Brussels and this looked like a great quaint spot to try a local dish. I opted to have Mussels in garlic, as well as the beef stew with stoemp. It was all delicious. The mussels were tender with the right amount of garlic flavoring. The stew would melt in your mouth and so rich with the onions and beer flavors. I had never heard of stoemp, but found out it is a mix of potatoes, other vegetables and some seasoning. That night it was potato, carrot and bits of bacon. This was a perfect night in Brussels! Temperature was perfect and the terrace of 'T Kelderke was very inviting. Located right on the "Gran Place" this is a perfect place to enjoy the night. I am not a beer fan but in Belgium this is a bit unavoidable! I had a Brown Chimay that was excellent. Followed it with a "stoemp" typical plate with mashed vegetable. Mine was topped with sausage. It was my first time trying that and it was quite excellent. Finished it with typical "Brussels Waffle" with cream and and an espresso. Service was good and the speed was fine (it's not a fast food restaurant so don't expect instantaneous service like some UK tourist sitting near-by). The restaurant is very unique because you are located on the beautiful Grand Place. You go down stairs into an intimate vaulted 17th-century dining room. They serve traditional regional delicacies such as horse steak, rabbit, and calves heads which none of us ordered but they also had waterzooi, mussels, fish, and chicken for the less adventurous. We had a very large group and the restaurant was able to easily accommodate us. There was only one chef so it took awhile for us to receive our food. I just sat there, and he motioned to the phone again. He said no again. I just sat there again (good negotiator) and he finally called an owner/manager over who spoke to him in french and they finally gave me a free small beer. We ordered the mussels w garlic, mais beer and the grimbergen beer. Mussels were delish, and the grimbergen was better than the mais. Had the rabbit stew in beer and the stoemp w sausage for dinner. This was one of the first places my husband and I went when we arrived in Brussels. After spinning around aimlessly for about an hour trying to find our hotel, the sun started to set, it got chilly and we wanted some food. We were right by 'T Kelderke, and we had heard good things about it, so we walked in. They had a great deal going when we went - a big bucket of mussels, frites and a beer for a fixed rate. This Little Cellar in the heart of Grand Place with close proximity to the Hotels retains a romantic-basement vibe, a bit of charming coziness and not overly much of Dungeons and Dragons styling. The capacity is limited inside due to small square-footage, so please be kind to your neighbours. So keeping in mind this place is on the Gran Plaz this place isn't too bad. They have many typical Belgian dishes, but after a few trips here I would just stick to the Waterzooi (both the chicken and the Fish) A lady sitting next to has had the Stoemp and said it had zero flavor. I've gotten the fish waterzooi twice and the mussels and fish pieces have always been good sized. As a general rule of thumb, I avoid the mussels and frites in this part of town. They are overpriced and under quality. I also wouldn't expect any type of customer service that most Americans are used to because they just don't do that here in Belgium. If you adjust your standards with the knowledge you aren't going to get waited on hand and foot this place actually has decent service. read more

Decided to get a typical Belgium dish, a pot of mussels in white wine broth with a side of french fries and some delicious escargot in a butter and garlic sauce (my favorite). Mussels were just a bit bland but the escargot was amazing! I think next time I'll ask for the mussels in a similar sauce as the escargot. Oh boy what can I say, this place and its food wow me. The service was iffy in the beginning but overall was really good. The place is hard to find but is across from Starbucks in the grand palace and there is sitting outside. If you lucky that is not raining and too hot sit outside. Now the food is freaking great, they also have a English menu f you request one. I was not that found of the drinks, but I will definitely recommend the food at least the one we had. This restaurant has a central location right on the Grand Place, so you'd expect it to be a touristy place serving up overpriced and crappy food. While I wouldn't call the food cheap by any means, I'd say that the food here is a lot better than you'd expect to find at a tourist trap. I came here at about 10 pm on a Friday night in August, so while the Grand Place was full of tourists and the restaurant itself was still quite busy, there was no wait for a table in the outdoor seating area. Sitting right along the edge of the Grand Place, I was able to watch the light show that goes off periodically where the buildings along the square are cast in a dizzying array of colored lighting while I waited for my food. My order of the Moules Frites (Provencal style) was pretty tasty. The mussels were, for the most part, plump and juicy, and the Provencal-style sauce added a nice freshness to the dish. The fries were pretty good, too, as they were crisp and still hot from the fryer. While my standards for moules frites are admittedly pretty low, I'd say that 'T Kelderke served up a good enough rendition of the dish to merit a revisit if I were to find myself in Brussels again in the future. Hearty portions of decent quality food served at reasonable (for a tourist hub) prices in a central location make this restaurant a place to consider visiting if you should ever find yourself near the Grand Place. read more
