Not sure what has happened to these guys, they used to be pretty good. Tom came out, looked at the project and then went dark. Pinged him multiple times and after several weeks, he eventually gave me a quote. I indicated that I had a couple of questions about the quote, and again he went dark, with no response. I should have read the other reviews before reaching out. I reached out to them to install some security cameras and it took them approximately a month to get back to me. When he finally did get back to me it was through a series of intermittent texts throughout the day, when he could have just called and it would have taken a few minutes to get aligned. We have always have a good experience working with owner Tom and his electricians. Straightforward, honest, fair prices. Tom hires good employees. Our most recent job with Eric went off very well. We were going away for the weekend so I asked if he could make some time on a Friday before we left town. It was a circuit with a floodlight and exterior outlet that had shorted out. Eric arrived on time, talked through the issue with me, made it all understandable, and told me what he recommended would fix. After I agreed, he got right to work and was finished in a couple hours. TEC has also replaced our main service panel, run power out to our garage rebuild, and a few other odd jobs. For bigger jobs, Tom comes out and quotes it himself. An Alameda original. I was impressed with how quickly I was able to get an appointment and the guys figured out a tricky electrical issue pretty efficiently. Another guy had tried to figure it out for 3 hours unsuccessfully before I called TEC. The only reason I didn't go with 5 stars is I had something personal stored in the cupboard that needed to be pulled out. The TEC guy said what is this? Then he removed the cover and he opened it. I think he didn't even realize what he was doing I was standing right there. It was a knee jerk reaction but it was inappropriate. Also the guys wanted to drill a hole through my house from the outside and install something on the outside of my house. When I questioned them about other options it didn't turn out to be necessary to mess up the outside of my house at all! It was done another way. I had to be an advocate for my house when they just wanted to do it some easy and odd looking way. read more

Miracle workers! Our home, which was brand new when we bought it 20 years ago recently had the neutral wire come ungrounded (likely due to faulty construction). Tom and Scott worked tirelessly to research options for us as the power company had shut all our power off. While initially it looked like a 2 week repair, after a lot of research and diligence, they found an option that restored power to us in 24 hours. I'm not happy about writing this review. Tom at TEC Electrical was recommended by my excellent realtor. We didn't have a huge job -- just wanted the overhead electrical that had been reworked by a previous owner of the house to be brought up to code to get permits. Timeline was important because of other work that needed to be done. I won't go too much into the details, but the folks at TEC chose to not mention what would have been a small fix because they assumed it wouldn't be an issue for permit. Unfortunately, it was an issue, and we failed to pass inspection. When I brought this to Tom's attention, he shrugged it off with a "that sucks" -- which essentially means "that sucks FOR YOU, NOT ME." It did suck, because, given other work that had to get started, it required me to do hours of work in a slightly dangerous situation with no experience or skill that Tom's team would not even consider doing. Had the issue been voiced when it came up, it would have taken about five minutes and minimal effort to fix, but the timeline issues and other work underway made it a huge ordeal. Ultimately, I asked Tom for a discount for the rest of the outstanding work, considering I had already paid him a few thousand bucks for an incomplete job. He refused, and I found another [less expensive, more responsive, friendlier] electrician to finish the job. Note that I can't comment on the work done by the other electricians on the TEC team. The work may be fantastic [or terrible], but I'll never know, since they didn't finish the job and their work was overshadowed by Tom's cavalier and inconsiderate attitude about his customers. read more

I'm giving the second star only because the actual electricians who came to the house, Robert and Jeromy, were great--it's the company (Tom, actually) that's a nightmare to work with. None of my calls were answered, and only half my messages were returned, but never in a timely fashion. A call on Tuesday wasn't returned until Friday, Friday's promise of "I'll call you Monday" came late on Tuesday, and so on. He finally scheduled some work for 8:30am, and when I called at 9:30 to ask if anyone was coming, he dodged my call and replied by text instead. It took another hour for someone to actually show up. (Of course, whereas Tom didn't apologize, the electricians who showed up were unfailingly polite and apologized profusely, even though I doubt it was their fault.) The one time I met Tom in person, he was late, took a phone call literally three seconds after entering my house, and was distracted and rude the whole time. In short: good electricians, lousy management. If you can find another company to work with, do it. read more

T.E.C. does fantastic work, and has very competitive pricing, you really can't go wrong with them. They've done both big and small jobs for us over the last few years and we've always been pleased. The biggest job we had them do was rewiring our 1930s house so we had grounded 3 prong outlets everywhere, which was quite an undertaking. They worked quickly and efficiently, and they're always very good about cleaning up and keeping everything tidy. They have excellent attention to detail, and will get things right the first time. I was getting desperate and discouraged trying to find an electrician to fix my outlets to my stove and refrigerator. I must have called about ten different companies and even referrals given to me by others. Finally, I contacted T.E.C and spoke with Jeremy. He told me he would come to assess the situation . I called Tom for a problem that I had with an outlet and he sent two guys for me. What we thought would be a simple job, turned out to be something even more serious. The team helped me discover that I had a hidden outlet just covered by duct tape. The last electrician that looked after my place did a half-assed job by covering a damaged outlet with duct tape and a piece of scotch tape over the breaker with the words "no work" written on it. Long story short, when Tom's guys flipped through the panels, sparks flew from the hidden outlet and almost created a fire. They carefully took care of that and also the initial problem that I had. A few days later after they sent the invoice, they called me to follow up on how things were and this made me feel reassured. For the people who are unsure of deciding on an electrician, I would definitely say T.E.C is folks to call. read more

We had a nightmare project through our HOA. Tom to the rescue! We had a complicated installation of a new electrical conduit and let's call it "new age" unit (at least for the HOA). Tom took over for another electrician who simply failed to live up to promises. Tom came in and was able to take the project on and get it done correctly. As any competent and busy electrician there may have been a slight initial delay with initial communication. That did not in any way diminish the excellent, prompt and professional work T.E.C. did. The work was done right and was approved by the city (which is THE most important thing ever) without any issue. We appreciated the additional tips that Tom also provided with respect to other non-electircal aspects of the project to get it all done well. We've had a complete electrical re-wire of an old Victorian house in Alameda completed by T.E.C Electrical. Tom recommended Berkeley Lighting Company and passed quite a considerable discounts to us based on various LED drivers, switchex modules and lights we've ended up buying for the project. Everyone who worked on our project from T.E.C electrical did everything on time and with great quality and care. Eric was very thorough and methodical on specification of all the outlets for appliances and types of lights and fixtures; that saved us quite a bit of time and money down the road, once we had all appliances and fixtures ready for installation. We bought our house in Alameda in October and my realtor referred me to TEC. I called them right after close because the house had some knob and tube and other safety electrical issues. The previous owner decided to only fix a 1/3 of what was needed in the 100 year old house to make it safe and meet codes. Tom is the man! He got back to me right away and him and his Dad came over within a week to do a walkthrough with me and listen to my concerns. Not only did he listen to what I was looking for he gave me great advice about other items and what the city requirements are. Cool part is his crews did some previous work 3 years ago in the second floor and he recognized the house right away. We went through the entire electrical system in about 30 mins. I got a reasonable quote for the work within a week. After another phone call with some questions we got the work scheduled. At first it was going to be a few weeks out due to the other jobs he had and the size of my job but he called me and said there was a delay on a different project and wanted to bump my job up. Awesome! So all said and done work started within 2 weeks of his consultation visit. For alameda and how busy every contractor is that was gravy! Tom showed up with the entire crew the first day of work and walked them through the job with me. They brought up good questions about my future plans and where I wanted everything to avoid conflicts down the road. Eric the lead electrician was nothing but great to work with. Communicated with me every day, asked before doing, and had a great sense of humor and was a pleasure to be around. He also works his butt off. His crew was great too. But very impressed with how Eric ran the show got everything organized and had a super efficient team. They replaced my entire first floor, attic and basement while also coordinating with my mechanical contractor AT Weber who was installing a second floor HVAC and AC condessor unit. Tom was the one who actually hooked me up with Todd at AT Weber and they coordinated all the work. When it came down to the city inspection and close out it went smoothly. Tom guided me through the lighting codes and recommended Berkeley lighting for my new first floor fixtures so they met code and could use the JA8 bulbs. BTW those bulbs are hard to find and good news is the inspector wanted to check them so we were good to go. Inspection passed in 20 mins! Bottom line is if you are doing any significant electric work in alameda call Tom. He is straight up and honest. His quote is what it cost in the end. I added a few things and his price was very reasonable. As a home owner do your homework, listen to what he tells you, and research if you want. I don't see how TEC would get a bad review unless the home owner was the issue. Overall Tom and his crew was one of best experiences a new home owner in alameda could get. So stoked my realtor recommended him. So if you are reading this stop here and just call his number to get an appointment scheduled! read more

We recently hired TEC Electrical to upgrade the knob & tube wiring for the ceiling lights in our vintage 1907 house, and we were very happy with the results. I got estimates from two contractors, and Tom did a much more thorough review of the house before writing up an estimate. The other guy just did a quick walk through and came back with a less detailed estimate that was about 10% higher than TEC. When it came time for the work to start, his team of electricians showed up on time and spent about four days doing the retrofit. Every ceiling light and every wall switch in every room had to be replaced.(About 13 lights, and as many wall switches.) I thought the team did a very professional job. They showed up on time, worked through the day, and cleaned up after themselves every evening. They had to cut several holes in the lath & plaster walls to get access to the wiring, and did their best to minimize dust by using dropcloths and hanging plastic barriers from floor to ceiling. The lead electrician (Eric) kept me informed of the project status daily, and let me know when any problems arose. As with any 100 year old house, there were a few unexpected wiring issues. It turned out the bathroom needed one more wall light and a GFI outlet replaced, but they able to roll that into the existing work without more than a couple of man hours of labor. Then, on the final day of work, we changed our minds and decided that we _did_ want a new light in the living room, along with wiring for a ceiling fan. Again, they did the additional work without complaint and at a reasonable rate. The final part of the job required replacing a pair of overhead power lines running to the garage with an underground conduit. This meant cutting concrete, digging a trench, and then pouring fresh cement when done. Tom was able to suggest someone to do the concrete work, and I was very happy with the work they did. They did a clean job, and the new cement blends in nicely with the old concrete pad. Final inspection was quick and painless. The inspector didn't have any complaints and signed off without requiring any fixes. In the end, I was happy with the work done and will definitely call them for future work. read more

Our real estate agent suggested TEC Electric, and we had them do some electrical work in in our Alameda home twice. The first job was very small, we asked them to come out and provide an estimate to install a 220 volt receptacle for our dryer. Instead of providing an estimate, they were able to perform the work in about 20 minutes for a very reasonable price, much less than I expected. Because of our first experience, we had them come back about a year later for a larger job that required city permits. TEC replaced the main subpanel for the house along with all the circuit breakers. They wired new circuits to two bedrooms and installed new wiring for a ceiling fan. TEC took care of all the permits and arranged for drywall repairs. There were no permit issues and the post-work inspection went smoothly. TEC was very easy to work with, flexible and accommodating, and respectful of our home. We will definitely hire TEC for electrical work in the future. read more

We had a horror story brewing at our 136 year old house . . . frayed original knob & tube wiring against kindling dry redwood framing, and an unfortunate experience with our general contractor (who was obviously dreaming when he said he could do electrical work!) that left much of his recently installed electrical connections in need of a re-do. We called TEC, and Tom was on it. Even though he was busy with another large installation, he was able to fit us in for a couple of days work to remedy the danger and solve some important issues, including rewiring.
