This place made me cry when I tried to book a party a few years ago . I just wanted to book a surprise party for my husband from Poland who was turning 30. I showed up in my christ hospital scrubs and wanted to discuss party planning. I said I wanted to do open bar and appetizers like they did for a well known dancer a few months earlier. They said they only do special circumstances for her and won't do it for me. I didn't wanna risk it and showed up to janosik with my dad and they honored my wishes. I usually like the food here but today the waitress yelled at me and my mom from across the room that they won't seat us because there is "no room". A table was clearly opening up, but I'd understand if anyone would come up to us to talk to us and let us know what time to come back. But no, I guess me and my senior mother did not deserve that ounce of respect. We went on a Sunday early evening. There were several tables of mostly families and young children at that time. Walking in to the restaurant is awkward. We felt like we walked into the back entrance of a banquet room. There was no one to greet us or even a hostess desk. It is large open room with no dividers of any kind. However the food we ordered was very good. We ordered the cabbage rolls, sausage and pierogi. My mother -in-law had a pork dish with potato pancakes and mushroom gravy that was very good. I have been to Szarotka several times and have never been disappointed!! Him the most recent time was the day of my wedding. It was a small little event with only the closest family invited. We picked Szarotka because of the deliciousness of the food as well as the good value you get there!! I have tried the cabbage rolls, potato pancakes, soups, pierogi, and the list goes on and on... Almost everything was amazing!!! I have always loved potato pancakes with goulash so I ordered that once and I was disappointed. The goulash was sort of overwhelming and not at all how I remember it from Poland. Everything else...perfection! Service is also fantastic! There's this one blond waiter who always helps us (can't remember his name) but this guy is great! He's friendly and knowledgeable. His service skills are impeccable! I had a hard time giving them the fifth star, but ultimately decided it was worth it even though there are a few issues I had. POSITIVES: 1) They have a very small menu, but the food is excellent and arrives quickly. 2) The servers are extremely polite and great with both adults and children. NOT POSITIVES (but not really negatives either): 1) It's a difficult place to get into if you have older people with you. There are quite a few stairs. They proved to be a bit of a challenge for my 81 year old grandmother (even though she gets around pretty good without any assistance from walkers or canes); however, after tasting the food, she said it was worth the climb. 2) The tables in the bar area are kind of awkward and uncomfortable. 3) Their pierogi aren't all that great. I grew up on pierogi and these were just kind of limp and doughy. They needed some salt and definitely needed to be cooked in a pan a bit longer (or maybe baked) to get just a hint of color on them and firm them up a tad. RECOMMENDATION: You won't be disappointed with the fish (Orange Roughy, if I recall correctly) or the pork cutlet. I've had the regular cutlet and the stuffed cutlet; they're both spectacular (and enormous). The fish portion is also very generous and expertly cooked (I don't really care for fish in general, but I'd order fish here any day of the week). So maybe my "not positives" section was long, but I still gave five stars. Yes, the food is THAT good. read more

I work in the building next door to here, so I usually do a carry out lunch. First of all, they have the best borscht with meat dumplings. I never had warm beet soup as good as their's. It's sweet and tangy, and just amazing. I ALWAYS order it, no matter what I get as my main entree. Pierogi are decent. I usually get half of them potato, half of them meat. They tend to load up the bacon on top so sometimes I opt out. Potato pancakes are the thicker battered style and very, very good. Breaded chicken breast is good with the mushroom sauce as well as the stuffed cabbage with the mushroom sauce. Everything I've tried here I've enjoyed but I always tend to order the same items because I can't get over them. OH! and the cheesecake with the raspberry wine sauce is to die for. This is where my family decided to have father's day dinner. yes. it was 1 pm. yes. it was my dad's decision. yes. it was a nice time. the overall look is somewhat outdated, however this can be overlooked as the food they serve there is good polish food. what i would recommend is the kotlet or what they refer to as "the best pork cutlet EVER" THEY ARE NOT LYING GET THIS OFF THE MENU. with fries and ketchup and you are set to go. now if you are like me, and you want to be different of course you're going to chose the potato pancakes with beef goulash and be sad. i was sad. also the pierogi really didn't live up to their usual deliciousness, but then again it's hard to compare restaurant pierogi to what your grandma makes!!! i'm coming back there to get my pork cutlet one day, which is IMMENSE in portions and breaded and fried to perfection. the sports bar area looked nice from where we were sitting too. a nice and pretty good polish place. apparently they have nightclub events there? might be cool. might have to swing by ;) read more

This place is garbage. I asked for water because they don't even serve water at events. I got sink water in a jug covered with some brown gunk on the bottom. When I asked for a glass of wine my wife and I got ID'd. Best thing I can say about it is that the coleslaw is probably made with real cabbage cause it smelled worse that my garbage can. read more

After the funeral of my Dear Aunt, we had reservations to go to Szarotka's. After hearing such good things about your polish food, and with being Polish myself, was looking forward to being there and visiting with many relatives that I have not had contact with for a very long time. Great place for Polish food. Everything is delicious. My favorites include kwasnica, kotlet schabowy, and potato pancakes. Highly recommend.

First things first, only house wine available and you get the impression that it's not a good brand. Strange uninviting atmosphere with only one person on the floor for everything. Potato pancakes were very good. Had the platter where everything, except smoked sausage is just kind of mushed together and tastes the same. Menu says side salad with entrees, but waiter explained that on platter, the sauerkraut is the salad. Huh? read more

Was so great to find and authentic Polish Restaurant & Bar in this area. I hate chains and always look for authentic foods but am usually stuck with the basic Italian, Thai, or Mexican. I was very pleased with their service and that they prefer to speak Polish if you know it. Their food was everything I know Polish food to be, the 'real' Polish food anyways. We went here for my mother's funeral banquet. Did not know this place even existed. Very glad we went here. The staff was very courteous and attentive and the food was wonderful. The potato dumplings and chicken were exceptional and everything was made just right. Also being a big salad person myself, and critical over my lettuce, I could not stop eating it. Also critical of sour kraut and again, it was the best. Dealt with Derrick (spelling?) and he was most attentive to our needs, and more so. All of our guests had no complaints. Price is just right on a per person basis. Highly recommend this restaurant to just eat dinner or for banquets. Would go here more often if it wasn't so far away. This place is excellent; the food is wonderful and the staff very knowledgeable and service-oriented. I was very pleased with my experience there. I do have one recommendation - I am a vegetarian (I'm a Polish vegetarian - unheard of!) and I don't eat any meat or fish. I'd at least like the option of having soup without chicken/beef stock in it, if possible. I'd also be able to bring more of my vegetarian friends there. read more

Ever since the new owners took over everything went bad. The food is bad because they changed cooks. The staff is highly unfriendly and very unpleasant. I feel uncomfortable being there myself. I had to give this a star in order for clearance to post a review but I would give it a negative star rating if it would allow such a rating! I can't believe this place is allowed to call itself a restaurant! Save your money and eat anyplace other than here. We booked this place for a memorial lunch after my mom's funeral, 2 days ago in March 2016. I had a bad feeling as soon as I saw the banquet area looked like someone's storage locker- nothing like the pictures online. Then I saw the small clear plastic cups on the tables for water (placed in old cloudy plastic pitchers on the tables). Then came the food, the chicken smelled and tasted like fish; some of our guests even had to ask if what the dish was! I asked for white meat/ breast meat to ensure fresh chicken and the cook said there wasn't any! The polish sausages tasted spoiled and the beef looked and tasted as if it came out of prepackaged frozen meals one buys at a big box store. They even managed to mess up mashed potatoes. Then there was the decor of pictures of Marilyn Monroe and other strange posters on the wall. This place is a joke. I can't believe they're allowed to sell food. Updated / reply on 4/2/16: Dear Voytek, I just read your reply and comments to my posting. While I appreciate you reaching out to me to find out more about my experience there really isn't anything more you can know. The food was horrible, period. There is nothing that can be done or said to erase the negative memories that my family and I will have forever about the memorial dinner. We were in a bind for a Memorial Luncheon location - we only had 1 day to plan, and only 14 attending. (Most restaurants in that area require at least 30 people, and more notice.) I read Rob S. of Schaumburg's review and thought it sounded like the perfect place. IT WAS PERFECT! I don't know what was better, the food, the price or the service? I made reservations over the phone and spoke with Derrick who was very accommodating. Derrick was also our server - he was very friendly, and very good at his job! No one waited for anything. We ended up having to add 6 more people to the reservation and the table was prepared for all before we got there. The food is amazing! I had the sauerkraut & cheese pierogies. We all had different dishes (American fare as well) and everyone enjoyed their meals and service. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Polish Style Grilled Baguette. Half of crispy baguette freshly toasted with mushrooms and cheese, topped with green onions. We ordered as appetizers - I would go back for the baguette's alone! Stellar service! How to start my review , let me say this was recommended by friends of the family as a place to celebrate the life of my mother in law who was a great cook , all types of dishes she could cook , her specialty was all kinds of polish / Bohemian dishes , so we felt safe that this was going to be a place we could meet after her funeral for our get together We got to the Restraunt and the servers were slow to give service when we got the food served the soup was broth from a can/package with some pasta shells passed as chicken noodle , I assume the chicken went through it on stilts as there was no chicken in any of the bowls at our table , we did receive a bread basket with hairs in the bread basket , this was followed by salad that made subway salad look like a gourmet meal , this was followed by pour main course , of polish sausage ( boiled to death) , supposedly roasted chicken parts that had been deep fried in a fish frier with old oil that tasted of fish , we asked for white meat and the server just looked at us in shock , when she returned to the table she said there is no white meat , I asked to talk to the chef , she returned to the table with a batch of chicken pieces that made the KFC 3 chicken breasts from one chicken also look like a gourmet meal , the beef was passable , but the graveyard congealed quicker than a jello, the mashed potatoes were yellow in color like they had to much margarine added , but I think any powdered smash potatoes would have been s better effort , the dumplings my wife said were passable , she was the only one brave enough to put them in her mouth , with the disappointment so far the kids were looking forward to some ice cream , the word being ICE cream , more ice from freezer burn and left a bad after taste in your mouth , this was washed down by look warm coffee I am a 53 year old man I have traveled the world over , I have eaten in fine Restraunt's to holes in the wall in third world countries , safe to say this was the worst excuse for a meal that anybody has ever served up to me , finally we asked for the manager and we were told he was out at lunch , can I really blame him for eating elsewhere, no I can't If you find yourself in need of a location for any bereavement or celebration there is plenty of places to try just don't go here , it was a total slap in the face to the memory of my mother in law, RIP Alice this was one bad meal I am glad you missed read more
