Our electric-only campsite at Sylvan Lake Campground near Custer, SD (Sep. 2017)
    Jenni M.

There are so many campgrounds in the Black Hills and Custer State Park from which to choose... we got lucky when we decided on Sylvan Lake Campground. We reserved a site in May 2017. I highly recommend reserving months in advance as it was almost full the entire time we were there. For three nights and electric hookups only, our grand total was $87.21. Pretty decent for very clean campgrounds, hot showers, flush/vault toilets, and drinking water. OTHER PERKS - tent pad - campfire ring w/ grill - so quiet and peaceful most of the time - relatively short drive to scenic routes plus Mt. Rushmore, Hill City, Keystone, Custer, etc. - trash containers & recycle bins Up the road is the "Sylvan Lake General Store at Custer State Park Resort." They have cool hats, ice, and the ordinary small market items. Debit/credit cards accepted. CONS - no RV water hookups & no dump station nearby - we never met the host... we think he purposely avoided people which is fine, but just don't put a note on my camper saying "sorry" I missed you. Lol TIPS - go for a walk (w/ some minimal trudging) around Sylvan Lake - it's awesome! - use the dump station & refill your RV at Custer Crazy Horse Campground 2017 Yelp Challenge 99/100

Such a beautiful place. Family friendly with a lot of things to do, trails, swimming, fishing, and you can rent kayaks.

Restrooms and roomy showers were clean. We had a 25' TT and site accommodated our tow vehicle. We had 2 sites a back in (3 nights) and pull thru (2 nights). Beautiful hiking trail behind campground. We had a fire ring and location is somewhat hilly so difficult for handicap to get around. All in all a great location and easy to find. Nice general store on site. Definitely have to get some homemade pie from the Purple Pie House, blueberry, apple and bumbleberry were delicious warmed ip with a scoop of Vanilla ice cream! The Claw Antler & Hide store had very unique and cool items bought antler whistles for the grandkids. Had the best buffalo burger at Black Hills Burger and Bun but go early its very popular! Even and some come with power hook ups. We moved to a cabin after 2 days straight of rain. Clean comfortable beds. Large porch and we could dry out tents there!! Large table and 2 fire pits. Store has everything you forgot as well as things you just have to buy! Small restaurant open and they have espresso. Pool is clean and easy to sit around or splash around in. Large jump play area that keeps the kids occupied! Laundry and 2 bath houses. A definite spot to return to.

Check in was a breeze & we were shown to our spot promptly. Staff spotted us into our slot & left us to enjoy our stay. As we were in a self-contained unit, we did not accress restrooms or the shower house. The pool snd dump station are understandably closed right now. Kabins were in use. It was easy to find & access this location. It's convenient for many hiking areas, Crazy Horse, Mt Rushmore, Custer city & Custer State Park. We were greeted each morning by a bunny. The only down was loss of water on the day of departure. As we still had a rather full tank, it wasn't all that major for us, but it eould have been if empty & may have been for others. Would definitely use again.

He came out to the RV as we pulled up so that we didn't have to get down and gave me all the paperwork right there and directed me to my site after giving me a brief rundown of the place. I really enjoyed my stay here. The campground was covered in neatly mowed grass and the RV spaces were fairly decent sized. There was a nice fire pit at each site made from an old truck rim (my kids got a kick out of that). The kids were able to play on a playground near the horse stables there. It seemed like a popular place for folks to come and stay who were traveling with their horses. The office was very nice and clean, and Jerry's wife was just as welcoming and professional as he was. The bathrooms were impeccably clean and well-kept. The laundry facility was also nice and clean. We were also told to place our trash bags at the end of our site and that someone would come around in the morning and pick it up for us. How cool! We had a great time here and will definitely stay again if we go through the area. Thanks, Jerry!
