If I could rate this without stars, I would. We reserved a camp site nearly a year in advance. We requested a site to accommodate a pop-up camper with slides that is at least 24 ft., with electric and water hook-ups. We received a voicemail confirmation with a site number. We ended up having a late arrival and called to confirm everything was all set. When we arrived, our site was different and when we drove to the site, it was clearly a tent site without electric and water. There was a site across from ours so we checked the late arrival box and no one was reserved at that site. They also had a policy to accommodate any campers who arrive without reservations after hours to pick any open site. So we set up. That morning we went to the office and told them what happened and said we would like to stay our second night in that spot. They said they had it reserved and we needed to move. So we had to break down everything and move from one end of the campground to another. This cut into our day visiting the local sites. We were further from the bathrooms too. We checked the original site and no one set up there, no late arrival check-ins. I'm not sure why they moved us, or what the motivation would be to not allow us to stay in the spot. We felt it was bad business to treat a customer that way. We had been driving a long distance and were looking forward to an easy two night stay and instead we were chasing our tails. On top of the poor service - the bathrooms were gross too. Would not recommend. Stay at the KOA next door instead. read more

We were looking for a dumping station for my friend's RV when we went to visit Mount Rushmore but sadly we got ejected from KOA beside it (since we didn't actually see their front office). The fine old lady was very helpful and so was the other junior officer who helped us look for fresh water to refill our RV water tank. We'll try next time to use the campgrounds but based on this experience (rate for dumping 10$ and water 5$) am pretty sure you'd have a wonderful and pleasant surprise on this campground!!! read more

This place is amazing! They deliver wood to your camp site, the bathroom and showers are clean! 5 min from Custer State Park, everyone running it were so nice!!!! Also there is the sweetest boxer named Shimmer that will love on you or play if you want! If I could give them 10 stars I would! read more

Amazing campground! My girlfriend and i, as well as our puppy stayed here for a month to work remotely and it had everything you could ask for. The campground was always peaceful, it was well wooded and everything was in walking distance. We stayed from late April-Mid May, so we almost had the whole campground to ourselves. We didn't have a chance to check out the pool (i think it opens May25?) and would be sure to schedule our next visit during a time when its open. The staff were all very nice and accommodating. Our Cabin C3 was perfect for the two of us. Plenty of space and amenities (mini fridge, microwave, tv, Coffee maker). If a minor repair needed to be done the staff were always on it right away. Didn't get a chance to try their Wi-Fi as we brought our own ATT hotspot, but the hotspot had great connection the whole time to allow us to do our work. Compared to surrounding campgrounds, it was very cozy and had a very family run atmosphere. We stayed at the Rushmore KOA after our stay here only because the last few dates we wanted here were already booked and it was terrible compared to Beaver Lake. If your looking for something more commercial with crazy amounts of activities then the Koa may be right for you, but if your looking for a quiet place to stay and get away from it all then Beaver Lake is defiantly the place. I cant review the RV spots as we were in the cabin but they all looked well placed and spaced out, rather than on top of each other. Almost all the spots have the privacy of trees. All in all i will defiantly be staying at Beaver Lake again in the future! read more

This has been our favorite campground in the Black Hills. Went for the first time 16 years ago, and for the 4th time a few weeks ago. This was the first time we had any sort of negative experience. Main issue was plain old customer service. We planned on staying five nights, but when we checked in, we were charged for 6. I brought it to their attention, and they did produce the confirmation email showing the incorrect number of nights (6). I then admitted either I had given the incorrect check out date when making the reservation months earlier, or they had entered it incorrectly into their reservation system. Either way, the response was, "Your fault for not reviewing the confirmation email." I get that I should make it a practice to review confirmation emails, but this was clearly an unintended extra night charge. At only $44/night, it was much more the principle of the issue, rather than the $. The owners were very unsympathetic and callous. They may have just been in a bad mood due to a very large group of campers that were making life difficult for all others with kids at the playground, due to 5 days of roving bands of kids cussing like sailors at the playground. I hope it was just a bad day(s), and not a shift in how they deal with first time, or return customers. read more

Loved this campground! They had a nice pool with a waterslide (4 or 5 dollars per person per day for the waterslide) and a basketball hoop. They sold farm fresh eggs in the camp store. Also had a nice fenced in area for dogs to roam. The only thing negative was that their WiFi was down. Also, there isn't anyplace in Custer to rent a car. We were in town to see Mount Rushmore and there are some areas of Custer state park that are not accessible via RV. For this reason, if we came to the area again we would probably stay in Rapid City so we could rent a car and get the full experience. read more

While the campground is large and beautiful the staff is not very knowledgeable about the amenities of the campground. They should not be able to advertise Wi-fi as it only works maybe 20% of the time, good thing it's free. The water went out during our stay and while they tried to be helpful it was a inconvenience that should not happen. Friends came in and rented a cabin but left after 1 night due to poor conditions of the cabin and the lack of any Amenities supplied for the price you pay. Will try other campgrounds the next time we're in area. read more

Beautiful facilities, amazing staff, lots of amenities!! My girlfriend and I actually mistakenly booked a trip to South Dakota instead of southern Colorado. After the experience, we were glad we did. The staff were super accommodating. They bring your firewood to you!! Inexpensive for the route we took and it's less than a half hour from Crazy Horse monument, Mt. I have stayed at three campgrounds in Custer. Beaver Lake is my least favorite. First, they advertise that they have wifi but they don't tell you it only works in a corner by the front office. We had no service at our camp spot. Second, I informed the front office that we were consistently smelling sewer at our camp spot. While in the office talking to the staff about this another guest said he also smelled it. The staff said they would have someone look into it. That evening I went back to see if they found anything because no one had come to inform me if it was checked out. I was met with rudeness from a staff member and told if there was a problem then they would have come and talked to me. So with no wifi at my camp spot and the smell of sewer I would not recommend Beaver Lake. read more

I came to this campground for a vacation in South Dakota and I loved it. It has a waterslide and a pool and on Tuesday and Friday they have a concert. They are in a very convenient place they are near town and a bunch of other stuff is super close. They are pet friendly and have some dogs there as well and they are so cute and love to play with balls and kids. read more

The best qualities of this campground: - location, just outside of Custer, close to Rushmore, Crazyhorse - pool, nice additional feature - shady spots, with tents somewhat removed from the RV's Downsides: - While some of the staff were friendly, the actual owner and his wife were really cranky on all 3 occasions I interacted with them, even going so far as berating us at one point (I think unnecessarily) - right on a major road with quite a bit of noise all night long - fire restrictions were not made clear when we reserved - I totally understand the restriction, which is set by the local government - I would have packed my camping stuff differently had I known I couldn't even grill with charcoal in a firepit Overall, I think it's a good option if you can't get into a public campground in a more remote area. read more

Everyone who works here was so friendly. The campground was clean and quiet with full hook ups and a nice laundry facility. The kids loved the pool, water slide and playground. They provide bikes for kids to use and dog toys in the fenced off dog play area. It's about 30 min from Mt. Rushmore. We really enjoyed our stay! read more

Very nice campground with small pool but a great water slide the kids and even parents enjoy (must buy separate ticket for slide but only $5). Camp staff very nice and many sites with trees and you can burn fires. Kids can even use their "used bikes" for free, they are rough but for kids without bikes they had fun. Would certainly return again if ever in Custer. read more

Th is a great place to stay, nice camp sites, clean facilities, friendlt staff. The pool is in good condition, the slide is fun for small kids. Easy access for all size RVs. Close to Custer State Park and Custer town. They also have camp bicycles for the kids to use, they all work and are in good condition. We bought our daughter a new bike whilsst we were there and donated our old one to the camp. read more

I highly recommend this campground for all RVers. The staff is extremely courteous, helpful and gracious. We got our dates wrong and showed up early; the campground went out of their way to accommodate us and get us a spot...even during an extremely busy time. We couldn't be more pleased with our spot (50). It is spacious and level with a huge front yard, plenty of parking area, numerous trees, and a beautiful view. The grounds are immaculate; well manicured, no trash, private, and serene...the "Perfect Getaway"! It is obvious that the owners truly care about making guests happy; no doubt, Max takes pride in Beaver Lake, it's one of the best campgrounds we've ever stayed at!!! read more

We got a last minute reservation. It was right by the office. We had our own private little yard. Very quiet and private. Clean showers. Every campsite had some grassy area with picnic table and fire pit. It was nice. This is definitely our first pick for camping my in South Dakota. read more

Stayed 5 nights with 4 adults and 3 grandkids. Weather was cold and didn't get to use the pool or slide for the kids. Shower facilities are good. Most spots are shaded with ample room to pitch an extra tent. Firewood available for 12 bucks for 3 bundles. Good picnic tables at each site. No problems with bugs. Staff are not all that friendly however. Beware the free bike policy as the bikes are in questionable repair and as a result I had to take my granddaughter to the emergency room for a broken arm from a bike with no brakes. And two weeks after the stay I got a nasty email from the owner threatening a lawsuit if my daughter doesn't remove her comments from social media. Absolutely no concern expressed for the health of my young granddaughter and her broken arm. The full hookup sites worked well and no power disruption with 50 amp service. Internet service is slow so don't expect to stream movies or video down loads. Not much selection for stores in the area and prices for common grocery items are greatly inflated. It is fairly quiet at night but many campers do seem to flow in and out at the beginning and end of the day which can be a disruption to some. In retrospect, I wish we had stayed closer to Rapid City as Custer is a bit of a tourist trap. Some like the shopping for overpriced trinkets but I don't really care for it. Sand volleyball and horseshoe pits are available if you are into that. Lots of tame rabbits running around and the campground has a wooden shrine to the rabbits. They will lounge at your camp and beg a bit but no trouble and everyone enjoyed them. Even our dog, who would have loved to chase them but somehow knew they are pets. The campers are fun to talk to and were the best part of the stay. But that's what makes camping fun. Laundry facilities are clean and ample. Very close to Jewel Cave. Prices and availability for everything go skyrocketing out of sight in this area during the Sturgis motorcycle rally so plan your trip accordingly. Normally I'd give 3 - 4 stars for this campground but I just didn't care for the location and the management and staff have really poor attitudes. South Dakota needs to recognize how expensive it is to vacation in their state and clamp down on the tourist industry a bit. We spent the week prior at Cody, WY and Yellowstone park and it was much more affordable with a lot friendlier people. read more

This place is disappointing. We talked to two different front office personnel and informed them we would be arriving late. They said no problem that they have a system in place for that. After driving six hours and arriving late we found out that there system had failed, big time. I called the emergency personnel number and left several messages and did not receive a returned call. All other lodging accommodations in town were booked full. Thanks Beaver Lake for hanging us out to dry. If I could have given a negative star review I would have. read more

Beware!! The owners will try to scam you with prices!!! We booked for one day and paid in full at the time of reservation; approximately one month prior. We even received an email confirmation with price. Upon arrival they told us they made a mistake with our cabin price and said we owed 30% more. When I showed proof we paid in full, the female owner became incredibly argumentative and stated too bad that is the price! I told her we were only paying for what they quoted us when we had PAID IN FULL! Then she says "Fine, I will give you a deal and we can meet in the middle or I will send you to a smaller cabin than listed in the confirmation email". She was incredibly argumentative, condescending and rude and went on and on! I reiterated this cabin was chosen due to its proximity to my sister and moving us was also not acceptable. It's clear they run the business completely disorganized! It took her digging around for 15 minutes to find our information then returned and argued even more with me. She refused to understand the point that her poor business practices were not the visiting consumers fault. What she also didn't realize was that my sister was also staying at one of their other cabins and had been there for 5 days prior and guess what...exact same thing happened.. upon arrival they told her the bill was 30% higher than what was told over the phone when making the reservations and she had booked it 7 months prior to me!! Owner used the exact same excuse.. "it was my employee Ross who made a mistake". Unfortunately his mistake cost my sister another $350! I find it remarkably incompetent that they have Ross make the same reservation intake mistake in January (sisters booking dates) that employee Ginger did in July (my date of booking it). My advice to ANYONE staying here if you even DARE to roll the dice on your vacation, MAKE them confirm the price per day in an email, make them email you the amount you put on deposit and make them email you the remaining balance due at arrival and THEN be prepared to have to find a new place to stay at the very last minute when your exhausted and tired because the owners could care LESS that their employees made mistakes (even openly admitted this to us) and decide to not honor any words they state. Not even worth the hassle in my opinion and the owner had the audacity to blame it all on us and slam papers and things around the counter... AFTER she said her employees had been making mistakes in reservations lately! She was defensive and rude for THEIR mistakes and totally takes it out on YOU! Total shit show there... and with the vast selections of places in the area to stay at, I recommend selecting a place that has integrity and honesty. read more

This RV park should be avoided! We booked for a 2 night stay weeks before our planned visit. My Mother in Law passed away while we were on a long 3 week RV trip, so it was necessary to change the dates we were to stay by just a couple of days. When I called to change the reservation, nothing was mentioned about a change fee. Upon getting to the park we again were not told about a change fee, but a $20 charge was descibed as an upgrade to a better site. After we left we get a call that they needed to charge our credit card for the change fee. Even though we did not authorize the charge, the RV park staff still ran the charge to our credit card. We explained we only moved our reservation by 2 nights, but the unsympathetic person still insisted on charging us the $20 fee. Read the fine print on their website if you can find it. And as far as the park goes, it is noisy, hilly, dusty and most sites are a challenge to get into. Internet and cell service is almost not existent there. Avoid this RV park as there are many others in the area. read more

My husband and I traveled over 5,300 miles from our home in AZ, to OH, up through the Dakotas, and back home. While we were in Ohio, my mother passed away. As soon as we knew how our schedule needed to shift, we notified six RV campgrounds and made the necessary changes. Not one park charged us a change fee, kept our deposit or in any other way penalized us. Not one. EXCEPT for Beaver Lake Campground. Originally, their office staff was empathetic to our situation, and made the requested change, but never mentioned that we would be charged a $20 change fee. Check-in upon our arrival was a total unorganized mess on the part of the staff, and after we left a "correction" was made to what we were charged. I know...it's only $20. But it's the point and the attitude of the owner when I spoke to her to question the additional charge to my credit card. She said they did us a "favor" by not keeping our total 2-night deposit and normally would have charged us the full price again. That's their policy folks. And it's even worse during holidays and the rally. There are a TON of RV campgrounds in the Sturgess/Custer area. My recommendation is to find someplace other than Beaver Lake Campground. read more

After unforseen circumstances my family and I had to cancel our reservations that we have had since Feb. We cancelled 15 days in advance, which I understand is not in the time limit of the cancellation period, so we are not getting any money back. I paid 250.00 for 2 nights in the cabin, unless it gets rented I get half back. I booked over the phone so I never agreed to this policy. Be aware that if you have to cancel due to an emergency that you obviously can't control you will not get your money back. I understand a cancellation fee but not the whole amount. read more

The website for this RV park promised Internet service so we booked and paid for 5 nights. After we arrived and set up, we realized that we had no Internet service, plus no cell service either. I live out of state and have an elderly father that I need to be in contact with daily. When I explained this to the owner and told her that I would have to find an RV park with at least cell service, and could I have a refund please, she refused. I told her that we would stay the one night, but I really needed to have contact with my dad. She still wanted to charge me for the full five days but finally relented, although she did make me pay for two nights, even though we were leaving in the morning. The place had empty sites all over the place, so it wasn't like she was losing money on our reserved site. She probably filled it the day we left and made double the amount. If you're going to make reservations here, make very sure you don't have to leave for any reason. Getting a refund is like pulling teeth. read more

We stayed here for 3 nights with 2 families, 2 RVs, 4 kids (ages 3-8) and 2 dogs. The kids said "it was everything we were hoping for": pool, water slide, really well thought out playground in the shade with structures for big and little kids. (tame bunnies too) The people running the park could not have been nicer or more helpful to the adults and kids alike -- hard workers as you can tell from the detailed care they take in maintaining the grounds with shelters over the picnic tables, super clean bathrooms, etc. We highly recommend this as a great jumping off point for Rushmore, crazy horse, badlands & all the black hills sites. read more

Awful Customer Service! We will NOT stay here again! This was our first time trying and staying at Beaver Lake Campground. The spots are very close to one another with very little privacy throughout the campground though the showers were clean. Despite their quiet after 10p.m. rule, both nights we had people outside talking until at least midnight. The first night there were a group that was very loud and kept talking and drinking until past 3:00a.m. We got very little sleep due to the loud and disruptive group camping that night. Parking was also an issue, we had two other people park in our assigned area which should not have been there while we were out touring the area for the day. We had to ask one of them to move over more to allow us to be able to get in and to drive closer to our spot since we could not get in. Roz and staff running the office were not the most gracious nor welcoming to us and did not make us feel welcome, its all business and no customer service. In fact we were about to leave the first night and go to another place but decided to stay the course and will never stay here again nor recommend others to stay here. read more

This campground has a policy of having their employees take you to your site and then direct you into your site. Their employee backed our RV into a site and into a wall causing damage to the back side of our RV. The owner was contacted 3 times and after telling us he would check into it, he never did and finally said that he was not responsible for the RV damage. I would never stay at this campground. If you do, you need to refuse assistance into your site. read more
