This campground is fantastic. It has great views with big tall pines. When the wind blows it makes the most peaceful sound. The owner, his family and staff work extremely hard to make your stay as pleasant as possible. My wife and I have done 2 trips here, 10 days each. We love the amenities , peace and quiet, and location. Custer is great. A nice little treat is the owner's sons operate a food truck with amazing burgers, fries and breakfast sandwiches and....they deliver. Beautiful with lots of trees, level site and close to Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore and Custer. Hosts was very friendly and welcoming and had an escort to our site. Restrooms and roomy showers were clean. We had a 25' TT and site accommodated our tow vehicle. We had 2 sites a back in (3 nights) and pull thru (2 nights). Beautiful hiking trail behind campground. We had a fire ring and location is somewhat hilly so difficult for handicap to get around. All in all a great location and easy to find. Nice general store on site. Definitely have to get some homemade pie from the Purple Pie House, blueberry, apple and bumbleberry were delicious warmed ip with a scoop of Vanilla ice cream! The Claw Antler & Hide store had very unique and cool items bought antler whistles for the grandkids. Had the best buffalo burger at Black Hills Burger and Bun but go early its very popular! This campground 's cancellation policy is heartless and unreasonable. If you cancel in less than 10 days, you pay for your entire reservation in full. Not just a deposit but the entire stay is charged. I had to cancel one week in advance because my wife was unexpectedly hospitalized. That cost me $244. This campground profits off the unfortunate circumstances of their customers. I find this abhorrent. read more

What a gem! We stayed here for 3 nights while exploring Custer and Custer State Park. It's a beautiful campground with many "Big Pines"! I was worried about maneuvering our rig through the trees to our site but our 45' Fifth-Wheel made it just fine. Our site had plenty of room for us as well. The nights were peaceful and we heard just a bit of road noise during the day. No biggie at all! The owners and employees really care about this campground and making sure the guests have a great experience. We will most definitely stay here again next time we're in Custer! read more

People drive too fast thru campground. Especially the people who work there (the guys who drive the blue side by side). So much dust spewing up and blowing into our site. People going up and down the road made it miserable to enjoy the beautiful campsite. Perhaps a little creosote on the dirt road might help. I definitely will not be back or recommend Big Pine. The young ladies at the office were pleasant and informative on things to see in the area. Hence the 2 stars. read more

Love this place and plan to return. Bill the owner, and "grandpa Dennis" are helpful, friendly , and a lot of fun to socialize with. The other help are wonderful too, kind and friendly which is uncommon in today's world. The campground is on the smaller side which I liked, very clean and well kept, quiet and quaint butted up to the part of the state park with little noise except birds. Located near Crazy Horse , horseback riding, Mt. Rushmore and many other things to have fun doing. Beautiful outscape with generous campsites and lots of pines! I booked this place a year out got here nothing like the pics bathrooms are awful. Have to walk 1/4 mile to get to either one of them. People coming in and out.Couldn't really relax. Thank you for a wonderful week! We camped here with our three children and small dog for a week in July. Such a clean, well-run campground. On the quiet side which was great for our family. Clean bathrooms, laundry facility, free delivery of firewood, ice, even beer! Two very small little playgrounds but my kids loved playing with other children while we were cooking dinner. About 25 minutes drive to the western entrance to Custer state park where we spent all our time. Nice big campsites surrounded by giant pines - you can see all your neighbors but didn't feel too close at all. Awesome home away from home! read more

We stayed for a month at the wonderful Big Pine Campground in May and June of 2014. The campground could be classified as "classic" in that it does not have any of the bells and whistles of many modern RV resorts but given the quaint, rustic nature of South Dakota's Black Hills region in general, I couldn't imagine a more fitting place to stay. The park is located off a main road about 2.5 miles west of the center of the little town of Custer. While the campground is located close to the road, we rarely heard any traffic noise (just the occasional truck). While we were staying here, there was some minor noise from occasional logging throughout the Black Hills National Forest (which encompasses the entire region). However, normally all we heard was the friendly hello from the hosts and our neighbors and the gentle winds rustling through the pines. If you're still and quiet, you will see the abundant wildlife in the area. For many mornings, we were visited by a small herd of deer. They would slowly make their way up the small valley that winds up through the campground. If you are so inclined, there are many outdoor activities to keep you occupied. Of course, there is Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Monument, the Black Hills and Badlands, Devils Tower (a bit of a drive), and Custer State Park (our personal favorite), but there are also countless day trips throughout the region. As other reviewers have mentioned, the owners, Ron and Angie (and their puppies too), are incredibly welcoming and helpful. We would have been very satisfied with our stay even without their hospitality and friendship but their charismatic personalities pushed our experience over the top. While Custer, South Dakota is a bit out of the way for most travelers, this is a campground we would significantly alter our plans to visit again. In short, we loved it here and will absolutely stay again! We are full-timers and have visited 100's of campsites around the country and we can say without a doubt you will not be disappointed at all. Perfect location to base camp as you visit the surrounding tourist spots. Quiet, peaceful, clean, great power, great facilities, great hands-on owners and did I mention quiet? We stopped here after a very long drive from California. This place was clean, affordable, and super adorable. The showers and bathrooms were right next to cabin and were also clean and the showers were exactly what we needed after a long drive. In the morning before we hit the road again we spoke to the owner and he recommended an adorable place for breakfast just up the road. I would definitely recommend this place. What an amazing experience! We camped here for a few days in our tent on site 81 and loved every part of our time at Big Pines. The site was beautiful and backed up to the A million plus acres of beauty. We saw several deer enjoying life right out our tent window. It is a perfect place to stay and we wish we could've stayed longer. The owners are great to work with and keep the place well maintained. The showers and bathrooms were some of the cleanest I've seen while camping. Plenty of warm water and water pressure. They have a store up front that has some necessities that they will deliver to your site. There is a picnic table, fire ring, and grill on site. We look forward to coming back here next time. We highly recommend this place for tents and rvs. read more

If you value locally, and personally owned businesses (not a corporation or chain). Ron & Angie (owners on site) share their lovely space for travelers to call home for a bit. Set among the hills, rock outcroppings and (of course) big pines, this is quite possibly the nicest camp ground in which we've stayed. Every site in BigPine is beautiful, easy access to water & trash facilities, and the bathhouse was always super clean (with HOT water & good water pressure). You might not find all the commercial kid activities, but they do have a small playground & other low key family games. This was exactly what we were looking for! read more

This is a great campground when visiting Custer State Park. Jewel Cave is down the road. Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park and Wind Cave are ~30 minutes away. This is one of the few campgrounds with space between the sites and under beautiful trees. The campground hosts are about as nice as we've ever encountered. Very clean and quiet. We checked out other campgrounds in Custer while we were there and did not see the trees or space between site that we had at Big Pines. The little town of Custer is friendly. There is a trailhead across from the Chamber of Commerce to The George S. Mickelson Trail. This trail used to be railroad. It is 109 miles long. We walked south from Custer and saw multiple wildlife with creeks and beautiful fall trees. This campground exceeded our expectations. read more

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical when we picked this place, as it had NO bad reviews. Figured that they were somehow manipulating reviews. But Ron & Angie (the owners) greeted us enthusiastically when we arrived, and provided everything we could have asked for. Had a great tent site in the tent area (highly recommended for site size & privacy), right against a fence to a park area. Every time we stopped at the office for local info/advice, our questions were answered thoroughly and patiently, Bathrooms & showers were clean & adequate. Even Bo, the camp dog, was friendly! My only comments are that they could use a little larger bathroom/shower facilities, as they get pretty crowded in the mornings & evenings. Owners should also probably "patrol" when quiet hours start, as we had a large group (sharing several adjacent sites) near us whose conversation kept us up one night. But overall, one of the best camping facilities we've used. Will definitely stay there again if we return to the Black Hills read more

Make sure you eat at Burgers and Buns for the very best burgers we have ever had. We stayed in Site 8 and it was fine, but next time we will reserve a spot up the hillside where it seems a bit more private. Love that they will deliver firewood and you can actually have a campfire. There is nothing better than to sit in the quiet of the night, enjoying a roaring campfire and a glass of good wine. Thanks for the hospitality! read more

We camped here for 2 nights in 08/2012. We found this park to be excellent. The majority of the sites are up in the tall pine trees, they are away from road noise and the location is great for the many parks in the area. This is a quiet park and the wi-fi really works throughout the campground, based on our cross country trip this is the exception not the rule. We would definitely come back to this park. We did a day trip to Custer State Park (bison, wild burrows) and then to Mount Rushmore and finished up with Crazy Horse. The downtown of Custer is very nice too. read more

After being smoked out of Glacier National Park - we found Big Pine on Yelp, with great reviews, and decided to head to South Dakota to finish out our road trip. The owners were exceptionally hospitable! As we would be arriving late the owners reserved a tent camping spot for us (one of the best) and left a packet for us at the office and delivered fire wood to our site. We were very pleased with the campground, our site and especially the very clean and well maintained bathroom/showers that also had a dish washing station and lockable charging stations. We cannot more highly recommend this camp ground. If you are into camp cooking the owners can deliver to you a grate for the top of the fire pit. This camp ground is centrally located to all the attractions around The Black Hills. We hope to be back. read more
