    Site 15e

Really nice campground. We stayed in a travel trailer. The restrooms and showers are cleaned daily, hosts are great, and the educational programs for the kids every night have been fun. The only thing negative was that our site, 15e, is tough to back into due to trees close by. We had to do some maneuvers to get it in, and weren't able to fully extend the awning. Water available near the shower house, bring extra hose. The site itself was large and plenty of room to play catch or other yard games. Custer State Park and the surrounding area has so much to do. Well done SD, my home state could learn a thing or two about how to do camping!

Custer State Park is great, and the Blue Bell is wonderful. Love the lodge and bar for great western atmosphere.

We had seen a few places along our travels and a lot listed in the tourist guide. We chose Country Charm Cabins and Corrals based on the advice of John and Ann (proprietors at The Shady Rest Motel). This was a great decision. Owen and Lois (I hope I am remembering their names correctly) are awesome. They have owned this location for 12 years. Lois is a riding instructor. Upon calling and making reservations I was asked about our skill level and told exactly what to wear and what to bring. The ride time is 2 hours. Riders ride their own horses. My son who is 6 was on his own horse with a lead. We are inexperienced riders so we were given instruction on how to handle our horses. Each rider is given a bag to take with them for water and a camera. Helmets are required for children. My husband and I wore one as well. The trail takes riders on a lovely tour of some flat grassy areas and some hilly areas. Lois is fantastic about explaining plants, trees, history, etc. along the way as well as explaining the correct way to handle the horses. The only thing I wish I would have known is they do not accept credit cards. We had some cash on us but not enough for the 3 of us. We were willing to give them all the cash we had and stop by with the rest the next day. They offered to let us mail it. We loved this ride. My son loved when we were able to trot.

The breakfast served is also really solid & hearty. My problem is with how things were and are communicated. My wife and I booked this place based on the advertising that said we could ride horses, our daughter is a rider and quite passionate about them. Upon arrival, Laura was unsure of what days we'd be riding. Keep in mind we asked about all this beforehand. Now, the days were hot in July so we figured we'd be riding either early in the morning or later in the evening. Fine. But she gave us no plan. I finally went back up to the house to nail down a time. We agreed to a morning ride the following day. Great! Nope. She later texted saying she had forgotten her husband had some meeting and if we could reschedule for that evening at 6. Cool. Nope. Something happened to the horses and she had to cancel. Ok. I get that. But then, she had some all day thing the next day and thereby effectively killing all options for riding as we were leaving the day after. My wife proceeded to ask for a partial refund as this was not what was discussed or advertised. Nope again. Her excuse this time? We hadn't signed up or paid for that. Cmon. Bad business and advertising. There were also guests arriving who were trying to reach her and couldn't and were quite frustrated with the lack of communication. So, great place in terms of scenery. But be forewarned of what is said & advertised because we did not get what we paid for by any means. Duly noted. We won't be back.

Breakfast was something different every day & served right on time. It was so relaxing to wake up & see the horses or to sit outside by the fire pit watching the horses, deer & sunset with Odie as company. Plus there's a hot tub to enjoy too. The accommodations were clean & perfect with a mini fridge & microwave in bunk house #1. I would definitely recommend staying here 100% & hope to visit again.

I was in charge of finding a home big enough for us to rent. I did a lot of research and used one or two, especially VRBO. I chose the Gold Stone Lodge, owned by Deerview Bed & Breakfast. What a lovely place. Everyone enjoyed it. This place is west of Hill City, which is centrally located in the Black Hills. It is right next to the Mickelson Trail which is great for runners, hikers, casual walkers and bicyclists. Really beautiful in the early morning. A horde of wild turkeys was in our yard one evening. (I don't know what you call a large group of wild turkeys). We were within walking distance of a place where you can go horseback riding. This is the first time our family has done this: rent a home together. I mention that because it may have been a bit expensive perhaps but I'm not sure on that. Linda, the owner, and her husband are very friendly. One day Linda had to come and see if the last renters left an item but she called ahead to be sure that it was OK. You can check out pictures of this place on the VRBO web site: http://www.vrbo.com/128400. The home is very comfortable and Linda (who also runs Deerview B&B) seems to have thought of everything. She and her husband have some beautiful design features in the home. In the pictures you can see some of the stone work that her husband had done: masterful work! Also there are a number of stuffed animals done in two what I would call dioramas, one upstairs and one downstairs.
