I'd recommend Hollingsworth if your looking for a place that We are a family with 2 kids (8 & 10) with just a little riding experience but were looking for a different experience from what you typically get where the horses are on auto-pilot. At Hollingworth, After leading the horse to the ring yourself, mount the horse without a step to aid you, and start riding. The owner gave us a few pointers and after a few minutes around the ring, off we went. He rode with us for the first half of the ride as we got comfortable and then eventually let us off on our own. His step daughter worked a bit longer with our kids and then stayed with them for the entire ride. She kept my 8 year old on a lead but my 10 year old rode by himself. We spent the first 15 minutes of the ride in the ring getting acquainted with our horses and receiving some basic instruction from the owners. They worked with our kids and got them comfortable on the horse and then off we went! The ride was great and the property is beautiful.

It is off season, but Andy agreed to guide us even though he was closed on that Friday. We opted for the 2 hour ride and Andy did everything possible to make our ride pleasant. There were two experienced riders and four novices in our group. Two of us are old farts (75) and Andy perfectly suited our needs - energy horses for the experienced and well trained plodders for us old folks. It was a memorable, truly enjoyable experience on a beautiful day in the back country. We rode to the top of a mountain and could see Wyoming 85 miles away. Andy told us the history of the area and the gold mining. We would absolutely do it again - reasonably priced with a perfect guide - truly outstanding. An added plus - we were greeted by "Claws", the friendliest barn cat you will ever meet!

We were making a travel video of experiences and adventures in South Dakota and he then immediately demanded we take no photo or video and we could not mention his company. Didn't want any free advertising from our humble travel video/recap and wouldn't hear us out explaining we posed no risk to him. Luckily we got our deposit back in cash but just a mess of an experience.

We had seen a few places along our travels and a lot listed in the tourist guide. We chose Country Charm Cabins and Corrals based on the advice of John and Ann (proprietors at The Shady Rest Motel). This was a great decision. Owen and Lois (I hope I am remembering their names correctly) are awesome. They have owned this location for 12 years. Lois is a riding instructor. Upon calling and making reservations I was asked about our skill level and told exactly what to wear and what to bring. The ride time is 2 hours. Riders ride their own horses. My son who is 6 was on his own horse with a lead. We are inexperienced riders so we were given instruction on how to handle our horses. Each rider is given a bag to take with them for water and a camera. Helmets are required for children. My husband and I wore one as well. The trail takes riders on a lovely tour of some flat grassy areas and some hilly areas. Lois is fantastic about explaining plants, trees, history, etc. along the way as well as explaining the correct way to handle the horses. The only thing I wish I would have known is they do not accept credit cards. We had some cash on us but not enough for the 3 of us. We were willing to give them all the cash we had and stop by with the rest the next day. They offered to let us mail it. We loved this ride. My son loved when we were able to trot.

I was in charge of finding a home big enough for us to rent. I did a lot of research and used one or two, especially VRBO. I chose the Gold Stone Lodge, owned by Deerview Bed & Breakfast. What a lovely place. Everyone enjoyed it. This place is west of Hill City, which is centrally located in the Black Hills. It is right next to the Mickelson Trail which is great for runners, hikers, casual walkers and bicyclists. Really beautiful in the early morning. A horde of wild turkeys was in our yard one evening. (I don't know what you call a large group of wild turkeys). We were within walking distance of a place where you can go horseback riding. This is the first time our family has done this: rent a home together. I mention that because it may have been a bit expensive perhaps but I'm not sure on that. Linda, the owner, and her husband are very friendly. One day Linda had to come and see if the last renters left an item but she called ahead to be sure that it was OK. You can check out pictures of this place on the VRBO web site: http://www.vrbo.com/128400. The home is very comfortable and Linda (who also runs Deerview B&B) seems to have thought of everything. She and her husband have some beautiful design features in the home. In the pictures you can see some of the stone work that her husband had done: masterful work! Also there are a number of stuffed animals done in two what I would call dioramas, one upstairs and one downstairs.
