Would return here with every Keystone visit if I could! Dog friendly! Breathtaking views, comfy cozy cottages and a heated outdoor pool. I booked this spot based on the fact that every cottage had its own front porch swing and adored the idea of being in my own space (unlike a stacked hotel). We selected the deluxe family cabin which was the perfect size for 2 of us but easily fits 4 with a pull out couch. If we had kids, they would have loved the upstairs loft (too small for adults). We loved opening up all the windows and having fresh air blow in during the day and for our sleeps. We dined twice at the Powder House Restaurant because the food was outstanding and the proximity was clutch. The cherry on top was the fact our puppy could join us. Thank you, Powder House Lodge! We stayed at the Powder House for a night. The cabin was clean and nice looking. The beds were comfortable and had good space inside. Each cottage has its own private parking space right next to it. The front deck is ample. The staff is very kind and goes out of their way to meet needs. They have a pool and a small playground. The location was convenient to go sightseeing! Mount Rushmore is only 9 minutes from the lodge. The cost was very reasonable when looking at other options in the area, especially for the experience, you will have here. I will recommend this place! The only complaint is that our cottage was close to the general parking lot and the main road, and during motorcycle season, it gets pretty loud. If you are a light sleeper, request a cabin in the back area. Highly recommend dining in their restaurant. read more

I stayed there last night during my visit to Mount Rushmore. It's located 1 mile from Keystone at the top of a hill and is a restaurant and lodge that provides overnight guests the opportunity to stay in cabins that are located close to the restaurant. My room was number 22 and it was behind the restaurant with its own assigned parking space. The cabin was about 20 feet above the parking area so I had to carry my luggage up the stone path to the single story 4 plex where my room was. Inside, the small room had a king bed, desk and chair, small open closet, TV and a small bathroom with a shower only. The ac worked well too. The decor was wooden rustic that gave it a cozy feel. I liked my cabin and would be happy to stay again. I recommend the Powder House for your lodging needs. P.S. If you want to stay actually in Keystone on the strip there are several motels and hotels there for you but the parking is challenging and it has to be noisier and has all of the bright lights. Powder House is removed from all of that and it's only 1 mile up the hill from it. It's relaxing. read more

I was taking my elderly in-laws to see the Buffalo Roundup and the Deluxe Cabin was a perfect fit and less expensive than 2 hotel rooms. Not tge Waldorf Astoria, but the Waldorf Astoria would have been a poor fit in Keystone, SD. The restaurant was truly top notch. read more

Had a really nice meal here during our stay in Keystone. Called ahead and got on the waitlist, which was really convenient. The Pear and Asiago Salad was really fresh, and their house dressing to go with it was amazing. We had a few small problems. We got a table immediately. The service was top notch. The menu was beautiful. We were glad to be able to sit down and order a steak. Covid had a lot of restaurants shut down, so this was a treat for us. Unfortunately, my wife only orders well done, and hers came back the same color as my mid rare. They fixed it right away, but it's a bummer when you have 4 different doneness orders and they all look similar in color. The cuts weren't the greatest either. I know I'm being picky, but we're in the middle of cattle country. I would've expected higher quality in a steak house. Overall it was a great experience, but it could've been better. It's a cabin, not a five star hotel and a cabin is what we wanted. Rustic but very clean! It was smaller than how the pictures portrayed it but since it was just 2 of us that really didn't matter. (We rented the deluxe family cabin). The loft was very small and probably would only fit children, not adults. The bathroom was very small but adequate. Really, the only complaint we had was the bed was uncomfortable. The on site restaurant was great, especially since there are not many other places to eat in Keystone. read more

We stayed at Power House Lodge for 5 nights and found the location easy to find and an excellent spot for exploring the area. That said, our room was almost dark with very poor lighting; even with the two side lamps on it was difficult to read anything other than our cell phones. The biggest problem was that our cabin reeked of mold / mildew. And I don't mean just a little. It hit me like a wave when we first opened the door. My best guess is that it came from the AC / Heater wall unit. I developed a pounding migraine for the first couple days that refused to go away as long I was inside the cabin. Then the weather cooled way down on the 3rd and 4th days and we turned on the heater. It smelled really funky as well but the the smell got better the longer it ran. The cabin itself was roomy with a microwave, mini fridge and TV with a decent selection of channels. The bathroom was nothing fancy but got the job done. Housekeeping doesn't enter your cabin, so you put a list of what you need (towels, trash bags, etc.) on your front porch each morning and the cleaning staff leaves the requested items in a trash bag on one of the chairs. Parking for the cabins is a bit tight and it was difficult to get out in the morning. Exterior-wise, the cabins seem a bit long in the tooth. Several have split / cracked wood panels into which moisture could penetrate. The staff was nice...kinda sorta. A couple of folks were friendly right to the point when you asked for something remotely out of the ordinary. Then they tended to get crabby or defensive. This seemed to be the normal for almost everyone in the local tourism scene. While not horrible, it's highly unlikely that the fiancee or I will visit the Powder House again. We would either try another cabin or just stay at one of the local hotels. read more

I wanted to love this hotel. I chose it for location and history. We arrived to check in well after the posted time only to find out roofers were still working on our room. However, guests who arrived after us were checked in immediately. Once in our room, it smelled like someone had just used our bathroom (if you know what I mean). Roofer? Opened the fridge to add our food and it smelled of rotten, spoiled food. Power went out in the hotel around dinner time. No back up generator so we had to go to the next town for dinner. Got in the shower for bed only to have lukewarm water, at best. We laid down for bed and noticed that the lamps were disgusting (see photos). The next morning my husband spoke with Dora (manager) to voice our concerns and to request an early checkout and refund for the one night. Rude is an understatement. She did, however, agree to honor the refund as long as we requested it through hotels.com. As it turns out, she did not honor that statement. My next call will be to Ben Brink, the general manager. In the meantime, I thought it would be important to alter potential guests. read more

Enjoyed my stay at the Powder House lodge during the rally this year. The accommodations were rustic but included all of the regular hotel amenities you would expect. Powder House is located just up the road from downtown Keystone as well as Mt. Rushmore. I enjoyed sitting by the the gas fire pit on our deck every night overlooking our motorcycles. I would have to say that the Powder House restaurant was not only convenient but the best restaurant we ate at the whole week. It seemed to be a popular spot for bikers passing by everyday. We enjoyed breakfast there just about every morning and our waitress Kelly was very pleasant and professional. We must have had dinner there about 5 nights or so. Every meal I had was reasonably priced and prepared well. Emily was our waitress for a few nights and provided excellent service as well as her knowledge of the area. As it was my first time out there all the way from New Hampshire I found the staff very friendly and helpful and it was good to see familiar faces every night. The picture shown is of the buffalo prime rib. It was excellent! I also got the buffalo filet one night and that also hit the spot. I would gladly stay here again in the future. read more

Great find on our road trip! We stayed in a two queen bed cabin and it was just perfect. It was much bigger than a traditional hotel room, with very high ceilings. Great amenities including a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and iron. Shower was clean and had plenty of hot water! They provided little soaps and shampoos in the bathroom. Beds were comfortable and the room was cleaned each day. The pull out couch was perfect for the extra space. There was a ceiling fan and a window air conditioner and we were plenty cool. There's a nice big porch area on the front of the cabins with picnic tables and one even had a fire pit. Super close to Mount Rushmore and all the restaurants/shops in Keystone. Staff was friendly and check in was easy! Plenty of parking. We ate at the restaurant and all of our food was great! They have a HUGE menu!! Would definitely recommend staying here if you're in the area! read more

It was light and flavorful- tender and flaky, I would share a photo, however I ate it before I thought of Thai get its photo. Stayed here for a couple nights this last week. Nice place. Beautiful little cabins. Stayed in cabin #57 at the top of the hill. Nice and peaceful; quiet swing on the front porch. I read a description below talking about poor water pressure - we didn't experience that at all. The folks at the front desk and adjoining restaurant were exceptionally nice. Oh, and we even had Wifi all the way at the top of the hill in our cabin! A little slow, but still good. All in all, a nice place and I'd stay here again. read more

Like a combination between a hotel and a cabin. The restaurant was great; good food - so much so we ate there multiple times that week. I recently spent a weekend here with family. The experience was excellent from the first day to the last. The restaurant was by far the best in the area. It served quality breakfast and dinner meals at a very reasonable price point, with fantastically cheap cocktails! I recommend the prime rib, ribeye, and elk medallion dishes. We didn't get a chance to try the summer lunch menu. We stayed in a room rather than a standalone cabin, but still had a very comfortable stay. Rooms were very clean, although some cigarette smoke did drift in from outside a few times. The PowderHouse is totally disaster - the bed sheets and towels are with humans hair, dirt, brownish-yellow spots and haven't a fresh smell!! Could not have asked for better service or lunch. We are one of "those" people, eating a plant based diet with some fish. Eating out is tough sometimes, but this place was so accommodating they made us one trout and one walleye fillet even though it was not on the lunch menu. It was fantastic ... my husband and I could not decide which was better. A day later he said we should go back and he was going to get the Walleye... Things I loved about Powder House Lodge: 1. After I made my reservations, I needed to change something, and they responded to my email SO QUICKLY and made it so easy, I couldn't believe it. 2. Making the online reservation in the first place was nice and easy too. They have a very informative website! 3. Attached to the office is a restaurant and all the food I got there was great! I recommend the Avocado Club sandwich for lunch if you like avocados because it was delicious. I also loved how huge the coffee mugs at breakfast were, and they made my scrambled eggs perfectly. 4. Our hotel room (the cabins were all booked) was very clean and pretty big! 5. The location was great and it was very easy to find. 6. The people who worked there (we were helped by 3 different people during our two meals and checking in and out) were all very nice, and very helpful when I had a question about the area. The one and only downside was that we had trouble getting cell phone and internet service in our room, but it wasn't really THAT bad, because down by the office/restaurant we could get it. Also, we were in the middle of the Black Hills, so I hadn't really expected to be able to use our phones that much anyway. read more

My husband and I got the honeymoon suite and we loved it. One queen size bed (wish it was king) a little sink and mini refrigerator. The bathroom has head lamp and right across from bathroom is an open closet with iron and ironing board. It was so peaceful here. I loved it. We also had a hot tub on deck which we loved with a bench swing and table. I am looking forward to return with our daughter since the honeymoon suite does have a pull out couch. read more

After reading several reviews at random travel sites; I decided to go ahead and book my 2 night stay at the Powder House Lodge. I loved it! I choose Cabin #25-as I was traveling with 2 small dogs; (yes they are pet friendly) and figured that would be the best scenario for my fur babies! The bed was super comfy..the cabin was clean...the bathroom clean. The only down side is little phone service...but hey your in the mountains...turn off your phone and enjoy it. We also had breakfast while staying there...french toast was tasty and service was good. Just and overall nice place to stay and enjoy the black hills. read more

We stayed here just this past weekend and it was absolutely lovely. The stand alone cabin that we were in was spacious, warm and comfortable. The porch swing was my personal favorite aspect of the cabin. The Lodge is in a great central Black Hills location and we were able to explore a lot of the surrounding area without feeling too far from "home". The restaurant was tasty and had a pretty extensive dinner menu. Breakfast was just a tad limited, but they were more than happy to accommodate my off-menu request. On top of that the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. I was a bit needy and had a handful of requests (2 cabin changes before arrival, wifi fix, room needs, etc.) and I never encountered an exasperated response. The 5th star is for their stellar customer service. We would definitely return! read more

My wife and I wanted to try a buffalo burger while we were in Keystone. After reading reviews for several places, we decided to try Powder House. We should have tried somewhere else. The patty was clearly frozen and pre-formed, and was pretty dry. It was also way overpriced at $11. Our server seemed annoyed if we asked her any questions, even though she clearly wasn't busy (there was one other family in the restaurant). A previous review described the food as "tasteless." Turns out that's the review we should have believed. Other people seem to have have had a good experience here: we did not. I can't say who has a better buffalo burger in Keystone, but someone has to. read more

This a awesome little place to stay if you are cruising through the Black Hills. Right outside of Keystone and close to Deadwood. The room was very cute and clean, and had a rustic log cabin feel. It wasn't a huge room, but just right for two adults. It was not one of their stand alone cabins which are probably bigger. We had a pair of bucks great us each morning and again around sunset, beautiful creatures not at all afraid of us. The staff was all very ice and helpful. The restaurant was awesome, but I'll write about that in the restaurant review. Will definitely recommend to any friends or family traveling that area!!! read more

Nice, quiet, and clean! Cabins are a little outdated with decor and amenities. Staff was nice and accommodating. They offer free WiFi but it was nonexistent in our room. They blamed it on their provider, so given their location- very possible! The lodge is in a great location to visit mt Rushmore, walk around keystone, and drive to the Custer State Park. We have been to the Rapid City/Keystone area many times over the years and always stayed in a hotel because we travel with our dog and it is always less expensive. We decided to take a chance on the Powder House this year and are so glad we did! The entire experience was excellent and the cost inexpensive. They are also truly dog friendly with all of their cabins being dog friendly with a minimal charge of $15 for the entire stay (not per day). The cabins are very clean and private. The stay was exceptional and VERY customer-service oriented. We stayed in the 2-room cabin #40 and it was beautiful, clean, quiet and had an excellent view overlooking the property. We have already decided to spend our 2-week vacation for 2020 at the Powder House.All of this and not to mention excellent dining at the Powder House Restaurant on the property.
