My wife and 9 year old daughter had an amazing time horseback riding for about 4 hours in Black Hills National Forest. Thank you Rockin R Rides!!

Peggy and her team were great. Coming from Florida we set up the trip well in advance towards the end of the season. The weather turned bad and we were a bit concerned. Peggy worked it so we could come in on another day and even though it was cold for us Floridians (48 degrees with wind), they made sure we were comfortable. The first few minutes out to the Black Hills was a little windy/cold, but our leader Randy took us on trails were the wind subsided and the view was amazing. We even saw some wild life while on the trail. It was really an experience for us city slickers from Tampa. Thanks for the memories and we will be back if we are back in SD!

They were so NICE and so great with our kids. We felt like our family was treated so well and it really made an impact on our vacation memories!

Happy family w teen and a younger child w special needs. . . Pulling up to the ranch w wide open views of the area (inc crazy horse) and away from the tourist bustle of the city, we were happy to find this gem. Our guide Kat, shared a "pony ride" w the younger who lives w Autism to see if he could manage a longer trip. He enjoyed the experience, but was not "trail ready" and I am grateful for their willingness to learn w us. We chose the longer 3.5 hr trail-ride for the teen who returned super exited (and saddle sore) from the beautiful views woven through hills, forest, and rock outcroppings. Great experience for all. Note: safety regulations do not allow for double riding as a standard for all stables in this area.

I would highly recommend this business. Took our family of 6, boys ages 8, 12, 15 and 17 in August. They have gentle horses and nice trails. Staff very friendly and training provided. The trail guide was very informative and checked on us the whole tour. Prices were reasonable and the conditions of the horse stables were excellent.

Not exactly what we were hoping for - but I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants a straightforward trail ride. The people working are funny and very friendly! We wanted to be able to do more than walk - but aside from that - a great place!

We signed up for a half-day ride that took us through a scenic trail where we had a great view of the Crazy Horse monument. Our guide, Kat, was friendly and knowledgeable and handled the group perfectly. It was a leisurely tour. There was no trotting, running for those who prefer that type of ride. This was a great tour for beginners or those who only ride occasionally. Experienced riders might be bored with this type of tour, although Rockin R may be able to accommodate more experienced riders if you call and ask. Horses were all very well behaved. My horse and my daughter's horse got spooked by a deer, but they only pulled to the side and didn't rear up. They seemed to know the way and mostly followed directions, although mine loved to try to stop and eat whenever possible. :)

Our crew, right before hitting the trails with Ally and Taylor at Rocking R Trail Rides.

Between the overall rating, mostly glowing reviews and overall affordability, we chose Rocking R Trail Rides for our horseback riding excursion, and it just happened to be only a few minutes drive from the campground where we were staying (Rafter J Bar Ranch Resort). This is a small business where the owners answer the phone, schedule the rides and check you in and out. The guides then meet you outside and, after a brief lesson on how to mount, dismount and handle your horse, help you to mount and perform all the proper stirrup adjustments to ensure a proper fit to your size and comfort. After taking a few pictures for you (with your camera or phone), it's time to head to the trails! Along the way, the guides get to know you and engage in pleasant conversation, one leading from the front and another following at the back. We had an enjoyable experience where everyone felt comfortable handling their horses after about 10-15 minutes. Ally and Taylor were excellent guides, so we made sure to tip them accordingly. If you're on the fence, don't hesitate to choose Rocking R for your adventure. You'll have an enjoyable experience without breaking the bank.

By far our families favorite part of our Black Hills vacation! We surprised our daughters (6 & 8) with an early morning 1.5hr trail ride and Rockin R Rides did not disappoint! Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and the horses were absolutely beautiful! As first time riders we were a little nervous (especially with our youngest) but our trail guide, Jake, was fantastic! We were given thorough instruction and were led on a beautiful ride! This is an experience our family will talk about for years to come and we cannot recommend Rockin R Rides enough!

We had seen a few places along our travels and a lot listed in the tourist guide. We chose Country Charm Cabins and Corrals based on the advice of John and Ann (proprietors at The Shady Rest Motel). This was a great decision. Owen and Lois (I hope I am remembering their names correctly) are awesome. They have owned this location for 12 years. Lois is a riding instructor. Upon calling and making reservations I was asked about our skill level and told exactly what to wear and what to bring. The ride time is 2 hours. Riders ride their own horses. My son who is 6 was on his own horse with a lead. We are inexperienced riders so we were given instruction on how to handle our horses. Each rider is given a bag to take with them for water and a camera. Helmets are required for children. My husband and I wore one as well. The trail takes riders on a lovely tour of some flat grassy areas and some hilly areas. Lois is fantastic about explaining plants, trees, history, etc. along the way as well as explaining the correct way to handle the horses. The only thing I wish I would have known is they do not accept credit cards. We had some cash on us but not enough for the 3 of us. We were willing to give them all the cash we had and stop by with the rest the next day. They offered to let us mail it. We loved this ride. My son loved when we were able to trot.

We stayed in the site 25 which is technically a tent only/walk in site, but your car is parked right at the edge of your campsite so everything was still in close proximity. We had a staff member come up to us to check us in when we are setting up camp and she was so lovely. She told us everything we need to know about the campsite, where the drinking water was, what animals will be roaming the park, the pet policy, etc. The campsites are very shady which was nice! The general store has your typical souvenir apparel and gifts but also groceries, essentials, and beer! We enjoyed our stay but probably wouldn't pick this campground again because we personally like more secluded campsites.

The cabins are pretty spacious, sleep 5 and have a nice outdoor patio, table and fire pit. Every cabin has parking for 1 car and bathrooms are shared nearby. The cabins were clean and basic, bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and whatever else you need. The only downside is the tiny bathroom, we had all cabins full and a good 120-130 people in the loop. But there is only 1 bathhouse with 3 toilet/sink/shower combo. It's not a regular bathhouse with 2 stalls shower, 3-4 toilets and 3 sinks. It was 3 actual bathrooms (they call it family bathrooms) that 100+ people have to share and get ready in the morning and nighttime. So once bathroom 1 had a family of 4 showering, that was blocked for half an hour. Got one more in the shower, you are down to a single toilet until someone decides to vacate the other bathrooms. Not ideal to say the least, you just have to get in line before you really really have to go. Lol The main lodge was across the street with good food options and there was also a small store and gas station on the campground side.

The breakfast served is also really solid & hearty. My problem is with how things were and are communicated. My wife and I booked this place based on the advertising that said we could ride horses, our daughter is a rider and quite passionate about them. Upon arrival, Laura was unsure of what days we'd be riding. Keep in mind we asked about all this beforehand. Now, the days were hot in July so we figured we'd be riding either early in the morning or later in the evening. Fine. But she gave us no plan. I finally went back up to the house to nail down a time. We agreed to a morning ride the following day. Great! Nope. She later texted saying she had forgotten her husband had some meeting and if we could reschedule for that evening at 6. Cool. Nope. Something happened to the horses and she had to cancel. Ok. I get that. But then, she had some all day thing the next day and thereby effectively killing all options for riding as we were leaving the day after. My wife proceeded to ask for a partial refund as this was not what was discussed or advertised. Nope again. Her excuse this time? We hadn't signed up or paid for that. Cmon. Bad business and advertising. There were also guests arriving who were trying to reach her and couldn't and were quite frustrated with the lack of communication. So, great place in terms of scenery. But be forewarned of what is said & advertised because we did not get what we paid for by any means. Duly noted. We won't be back.
