I visited the Black Hills National Forest in early October, and it felt like the best time to visit!! It was sunny, breezy, but not many bugs or traffic on trails!! Both the plant life and rock formations were breathtaking, and the best way to get outside before the snow starts! There is also a wide variety of trails which I appreciated. There are many trail options of varying lengths, elevations, and difficulty for whatever your group needs! I would highly recommend if you're ever in the area-- 2 days is perfect to see the sights!

One of my favorite places in the world. You need to go here. There is no review that will do it justice just go! IF you love nature and history, maybe some food and hiking than the Black Hills is for you!! I have been going every year since I was 4 or 5 and I never want to stop going back. There is something new to see and be amazed with around every corner.

The majority of Black Hills National Forest (BHNF) lies in South Dakota, but a small portion also exists in Wyoming. Within BHNF is a wide range of places and experiences just about anyone can partake in such as: - Mount Rushmore - Custer State Park - Sylvan Lake - Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) - The "Wildlife Loop" (highly recommended) - Bear Country USA (technically, this is just outside of the boundaries, but again - highly recommended) - Needles Highway - 1880 Train - Crazy Horse Memorial - camping (tent and RV) - hiking - pretending to be an outlaw... & much, much more As you drive through the area, you'll see the aftermath of the pine beetle and its destruction of so many trees. Just know that this is a slow recovery process and there has been a decline in recent years of further demolition by the nasty creatures. We were here earlier this month (Sep. 2017), but I bet it's even more beautiful during the fall and winter months. I wish we had time to return more often. There's so much more hiking and camping we'd like to do. TIP - Before you go, visit the Forest Service's website to check on road construction delays, prescribed burns (controlled fires), and such: https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/blackhills/home 2017 Yelp Challenge 94/100

October in the Black Hills National Forest is just breathtaking... From the forest to the lakes, the spires and thru the mountainside tunnels, to snow covered canyons and waterfalls, national monuments and awesome vistas, autumn and winter meld together for a short period of time in a unique and magical manner seen by the lucky few. Glad to say I'm one of them!

I love the black hills. So many hikes and so much to enjoy. Not overcrowded and lots of joy.

This picture does no justice for the absolute beauty these animals have!

Stunningly beautiful!!! Watched over 300 Bison walk around! Lots of little babies too! These animals are stunning. Pictures do no justice. You have to see it to understand their beauty. The visitors center has an interactive map showing the location of the Bison. If you visit, Bison watching is key. The lakes and natural beauty here is breathtaking. The park has so much to offer in terms of trails, fishing, and wildlife watching. Take a dip in one of many lakes. Lots of food and overnight accommodations around the entire park. This is a place I suggest visiting to escape every day stress, and a unforgettable vacation. Lots of activities for kids as well.

Multi-terrained expanse of wilderness with the grand Mt. Rushmore as its centerpiece. But don't forfeit seeing a beautiful part of the country's interior by just zipping in and out of the monument to four historic national molders of the country's bedrock. The Black Hills presents terrific opportunities to roll around impressive terrain on superbly maintained park highways or to get out and make your own unique memories, whether by cycling, fishing or hiking. There's a signpost on I-90 as you travel through the Berkshires in Massachusetts, alerting you to the sad reality that you won't hit another elevation even as modest as this on the interstate until you reach South Dakota. So the change in topography you encounter as you enter the Black Hills couldn't be more significant: 1750 miles have passed under your wheels before the earth has buckled up again to reach this height. And sometimes national parks and wilderness areas are very hit and miss when it comes to catching glimpses of their signature wildlife. Not here. The park will treat you to swarms of wild horses and bison, which congregate in natural areas of their own choosing. There's also excellent nightlife, though a bit on the unrefined side, to be found in the hopping town of Sturgis, which is a biker's (not cyclist's) mecca. Deadwood and Lead have retained their old West heritages if you want to explore some American history that likely was bypassed in the school textbooks. Certainly a part of the country you don't want to spend your life overlooking, as it caters to many distinct aspects of Americana and is very much an important component of America the beautiful.

The view from the top is amazing but brace yourself for a 3 hour hike or longer depending on how fast you walk! Bring plenty of snacks and water so you can take your time without getting famished ! Their are different trails for any type of hiker weather you are experienced or a rookie which makes this place great and family friendly !

I love being out here riding my Harley's when Im at sturgis. It's the best place to zone out, relax and enjoy the scenery. You have the opportunity to see plenty of wildlife, stop, take in the ambient, relax.... God, I love this place.

It was a great experience I was told that if you want to see even more come earlier and you will thoroughly enjoy how much our life is out and about we went about 1 o'clock and still having to enjoy the time seeing lots of wildlife This wildlife road definitely can take you about two hours to drive on so be prepared for that if you take the wildlife road After that, we continued on to see the eye of the needle and many other amazing places they had inside the park. After driving around, we stopped by the lake. They have some beautiful deck seating for you if you decide to either go in get some food and eat on the deck area outside or take it to go either way it is a great atmosphere inside the gift shop plenty of smiling faces and Nice People working in this area. Oh, I definitely think that it was a world park and every person we encountered whether it was a park range or a worker they were very nice and courteous easy to talk to and we definitely just enjoyed our time there

Because when you walk in there is a large scale model of the park and they mark it to show the last reported sighting of bison. The volunteers then showed us how to find that area, and they also showed us another visitor center along the way where they recommended we stop to get further updated information. The bison were located at the southern end of the park, so the beginning of our drive was just through beautiful landscape, without much wildlife at that point. We stopped as instructed at the next visitor center, and got an updated status of the bison, as well as directions on how to find them, as you needed to go off on one of the side roads. We headed off, and then as we rounded the bend on the road there they were! Hundreds of bison as far as you could see. It was absolutely amazing. You can easily pull to the side of the road and stop, and you can roll down your windows and just observe - it was incredible. Several times we were stopped along the way as they crossed the road in front of us. It was absolutely one of the highlights of our trip to South Dakota. After we finished driving through the herd, we continued our journey and ended up at the Blue Bell Lodge for lunch, which we highly recommend. From there, we drove the Needles Highway, a big portion of which in our case was done in the rain. But despite the rain, there was still lots to see, even though a lot of it for us was from inside the car, where we periodically rolled down the windows to take pictures. I would say our day at Custer State Park was absolutely the best experience we had during the entire stay in South Dakota, so I would highly, highly recommend it!

I thought the tour was very well done, and I saw a lot of calcite crystals (and other formations) which gave the cave its name. Be warned though, you have to bundle up for the tour as the inside is 49°F / 9°C year-round, and you must wear closed-toe shoes. The Scenic Tour itself is a guided tour that has over 700 steps and covers 1/2 miles underground. Some of the pathway's ceilings are low, so if you're tall be sure to duck when the ranger tells you. There is lighting all the way so you can see when the low sections are coming. I learned a lot about the cave, its history, and how it's currently being maintained. The steel walkways have catch trays for lint and other stuff that falls off of guests, and when they clean it annually it has around 17 lb of "stuff". They really try to balance cave preservation with accessibility to the public. I highly recommend this tour.

I wasn't the only one with that idea, but was fortunate to get a spot on a tour only about 45 minutes after I arrived, which was just enough time to grab by long sleeve and pants (because of the cave's cool constant temp) and take a look through the visitor center. The Scenic Tour itself was engaging and informative. Our tour guide did a good job of giving us some facts about the cave, its history, and pointing out different formations within and was very personable, chatting with members of the group as we walked between areas. I really enjoyed being able to see some of the details of the formations up close (or at least highlighted by our guide's flashlight) to see the amazing details that have formed over time. There are a number of stairs on the tour, but with the pace of the tour, it didn't feel strenuous. It's wild to me that they've discovered over 200 miles within this cave and there is so much they still don't know, thinking that there may be over 5000 miles total to explore! It makes me want to take other cave tours in the future to see the differences in the rocks. There are also some trails around the area to explore, if you want more than just the cave to look at

Pictures really do not prepare you for how massive this mountain carving actually is in person. The scale is unbelievable, and learning that it has been actively worked on since 1948 makes it even more fascinating. What surprised me most was how much there is to do besides just looking at the mountain. The museums, cultural exhibits, artwork, and history throughout the memorial made the experience feel much deeper and more meaningful. You can tell there is a huge focus on honoring Native American culture and preserving history, which made the visit feel educational as well as visually incredible. We also highly recommend doing the bus tour to get closer to the carving because it really helps you understand the size and detail of the project. The views from the property are beautiful, and there are so many great photo opportunities everywhere you look. If you are visiting the Black Hills or heading to Mount Rushmore, this is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.
