Prior to the pandemic, I took part in group training five days a week and loved it. Then, all of that stopped and I had to adapt to working out at home. As we all know, it can be a challenge to stay motivated because, if you miss a workout, who's gonna know? Also, it can get pretty boring. So, when the 90 Day Body Transformation Challenge came along, I was a little hesitant. I wasn't comfortable going back to the gym yet and I already had home workout plans that were okay. How could this be different? Well, I did some research and checked out Scott and SY Performance's reviews and was very impressed. I signed on for the challenge and was so glad that I did. It was a very positive experience. Weekly meal plans were provided for several different diet preferences. There's a private Facebook group for mutual encouragement and as a place to ask questions and pick up tips. We also had multiple little contests to win prizes from local businesses and it was nice additional motivation to stay active. Workout details were provided online and in an app and were accompanied by detailed instructions and short videos to help you make sure you're using good form. I could work out when it was convenient for me, knew what I needed to do each day and, because the exercises were varied, I didn't have a chance to get bored. I love that. Though I was working out by myself, I really didn't feel alone. One day, I forgot to press the submit button with the results of my workout and the team messaged to make sure I was okay. I knew someone was watching and cared that I was sticking to the program. Wow. So helpful. Because I was working out at home, I asked questions about finding substitute exercises and I always received timely answers. The team also gave me supportive feedback once I had completed (and remembered to submit) my workouts. I finished the program and was truly sorry to see it end. I've been working out for most of my adult life because I gain weight easily if I'm not mindful of what I eat. I've managed to do pretty well over the years and was in fairly good shape. I have been training with Scott since the beginning of the year and I can already say with certainty that it is the best investment I have ever made for myself. I only wish I had done it sooner! I signed up for Scott's 90 day program after several years of having the best intention to develop a consistent work out routine, but continuously falling short on this plan due to a busy work schedule combined with lazy habits. I just can't say enough good about Scott at SY Performance. I came in being extremely skeptical of gyms in general. I am more the outdoorsy type so the idea of working out in a gym didn't really appeal to me. From the very get go I was impressed. My entire life, I struggled with my weight - I was always the fat kid. Then I had a health scare forcing me to lose a ton of weight and get into the best shape of my life. I retired last year. As I was preparing to leave my job, I'd listed any number of things I wanted to do when I was done working, and, at the very top of that list...I have got to get in shape. So, I got a good start right out of the gate, but I had a little surgery, and I got sedentary as I mended. Then came the Holidays, and, by the time the New Year arrived, my back slide was complete. Every pound I'd lost initially had come back, and they brought friends with them. I'd become aware of Scott Yonehiro when I joined FunXional Fitness (a great new facility near my home in Burbank). I got a very good feeling when I met with him to discuss his Plan, and, in late February, I got started. I've really loved the Program. I started training with Scott in June of this year ('21). After having my 2nd child, I was 7 months postpartum and wanted to start getting back into shape. I have "2u2" (2 children under 2 y.o.) and most days I am exhausted and barely have time but I make it a priority to go to Scott. My time with him has been completely worth it. I was apprehensive at first as I was/am still breastfeeding and didn't know how sensitive Scott would be to my postpartum needs (worried about breast milk supply as I feed my child and pump for a friend's baby as well) but it turned out this is one of the best parts of training with him, for me personally - he not only is a hard working, caring trainer but an understanding fellow parent. Happy to report, my supply has not decreased at all! He has extensive knowledge in all things exercise/fitness but also nutrition. Between my husband and I, we see him 5 days a week and he keeps us accountable with our daily nutrition and it has made a huge impact in our lifestyle. He pushes you but is also very compassionate and flexible with your goals and personal lifestyle in mind. Another thing that has been great about Scott is his level of professionalism. Always fun to talk with during workouts but he stays focused and stays on track during sessions. He is also very generous with his time - never makes you feel rushed or that he has other more important things to do - this is even though his days are filled with clients from morning til night. It was very important to me personally to find someone who has a peaceful spirit and not some a-hole meathead and Scott fit that bill too! He is a thoughtful, meditative person who even goes as far as clearing his mind and aura before he starts a new session so as to come with clean energy. Before I started training with SY Performance, I was in the worst shape I've ever been in. I would breathe heavily just going up to my second story apartment, I would have a food coma seemingly after every big meal, and I was the heaviest I'd ever been by over 20 lbs. With a family history of diabetes, an awful diet, and a sedentary lifestyle, I knew it was time to make a change. As soon as I walked into the Funxional Fitness facilities, I knew it was going to be a better gym experience than I'd ever had before. A large part of my lifestyle before starting with SY Performance was that diet and exercise were such a chore. He helped retrain my mindset from them being a chore, to them being a necessary part of a healthy life. I knew that was the case before, but he's managed to find the fun in both diet and exercise for me. Once I fully dedicated myself to the plan he custom made for me, I started to notice changes almost immediately. Scott put in the time to explore my interests, both in and out of the gym, as well as my goals, and we've found a workout that doesn't even feel like a workout to me because it's fun. Most of our sessions consist of kickboxing, but the weight machines still make an appearance from time to time and they are top-of-the-line machines. I also appreciate that despite a pretty strict diet plan, I get a weekly cheat meal where I can go nuts. That has sustained my sanity and made the dieting so much easier. Scott even went above and beyond and agreed to join me on a trip to the grocery store to pick out healthy options without ever suggesting I buy something I simply don't like for the sake of its health benefits. I still eat foods I like, I'm just smarter about it and choosing higher quality food. I've lost a total of 40 lbs. now since I signed up for my membership, with 23 of those pounds dropping off in the first 2 and a half months of 2018 (when I really decided to get serious about following Scott's process). Due to my experience with Scott and SY Performance, I am well on the way to achieving my goal (185 lbs. by July. I currently sit just over 208 lbs., and was 247 when I started). I am finally accountable to myself with my dietary decisions which was a huge hurdle for me, and will probably be the best safeguard to slipping back into my former, much unhealthier lifestyle. Scott is a very knowledgeable, educated trainer who makes you feel very comfortable working with him (like family). Scott was able to identify old injuries and weaknesses in my body and how those weaknesses and injuries were affecting my workouts. I was circumventing certain muscles and not performing many exercises correctly, which affected my results. Scott was able to give me exercises to strengthen those muscles and correct my form, which is invaluable. That attention to detail is what sets Scott apart from the rest. Additionally, Scott has some really cool technology that helps measure your fat/muscle and track your progress...which I really liked. I'm a distance cyclist and this past training and riding year has been a brutal one for me. In spite of numerous injuries, I insisted on continuing to train and then complete a 500 mile bike ride this past June. After heeding warnings from my chiropractor to take it easy, I was eager to return to the gym and get back on track. He agreed, with one caveat: if I were going to go back to the gym, I MUST work with a personal trainer. That was fine with me and I knew EXACTLY who I wanted to work with. And so I signed up for a "fitness evaluation" and shared with him my history of illnesses, and that I was under the careful eye of my chiropractor. I have always been wary of 'trainers' out there who seem to be knowledgeable, but inexperienced and not fully invested in helping you transform. However, Scott is one of those rare trainers - he is motivated, very knowledgeable, and draws from his varied background and experience to tailor a program that will work for you. I came to see Scott to lean out and get in shape for my wedding. What I got was that and more - he was very adept in identifying weak areas and focused on building strength, stability, and body composition. He helped me strengthen my weak lower back, left shoulder, and thoracic, all while meeting my primary goals of improved body composition. Before Working with Scott at SY Performance I was working out really hard and not seeing any results. I met with him, went over my work outs, and really discovered that I had been doing it all wrong! I was 212 lbs 23% body fat and needing to lean out to see more toned muscle and definition.
