I was a walk in, and there was one other person having work done when I dropped in. The shop is clean and well organized; there is heavy metal playing over the speakers and the walls are packed full of art... presumably from the artists, but nonetheless is pretty cool. I was greeted and helped by Styx who ended up being my piercer. She gave me a rundown of pricing and my jewelry options ($50 for what I chose plus the $50 piercing fee), and spent a few minutes in the back getting the space ready. Once she called me back, the whole process was only a few minutes, but she explained every step she was taking as she was taking it, and had a relaxed tone the whole time. She was very sweet and gentle, and it was very apparent that she took sterility seriously. The last piercing I had was crudely done in a bathroom by a friend right after high school, so this was certainly a much better (and safer) experience for me. I'm in the market for more tattoos but haven't decided on a piece quite yet, though Stay Local may end up being where I book an appointment next!

I used Instagram to find the artist who I found to match my taste and quality. Went in met with him paid the upfront fee and set a date...Welp a few days before my artwork I get a DM saying he doesn't want to do the work...I was sort of devastated to say the least ( If you are reading this it is all good and I have nothing but love and respect for you and I understand). I reached out to Maira and she was amazing...gave me options to pick another artist. I chose Dany and was really impressed by how talented and dedicated he is to his art. Arrived at 11:30 am and left at 10:30 pm... Dany worked his butt off and he put his heart and soul into my piece. It came out AMAZINGLY. I cannot thank and recommend enough Ikonik Tattoo for their love and patience. All of the people that work there are phenomenally talented artists. He did a COVER-UP for me of a very old tattoo and there is NO TRACE of the original. He hand-drew over my old tattoo when we first met--and his drawing skills are remarkable. More importantly, he listened closely to what I wanted, made me feel at ease, and talked to me when I got tired (my tattoo took a full-day and a 3/4-day session). Andres is not your average tattoo artist and not your average person. He thinks deeply about art and knows a lot about many different topics: philosophy, politics, literature, and art history, to name a few. He is a great artist who works in the medium of flesh, flourishing his tattoo pen with aplomb. Certified Tattoo, however, is not the best home for an artist of Andres' caliber. The appointment/sales team is overly friendly in a manner that felt disingenuous. The front desk staff was not friendly; they did not say hello when I walked in and kept me waiting without acknowledging my presence (this happened during both of my visits). The main studio at the Yale office is very open and loud, full of male tattoo artists with stereotypical swagger (and too much testosterone). The secondary studio where Andres works is much quieter, but there is no privacy and no concern for the client experience. They did not ask me what type of music I wanted to listen to, for example, and I was forced to listen to 8+ hours of Matchbox Twenty. The lighting is harsh with very blue light. People came and went as I was being tattooed--without saying hello or goodbye. I was face down, so I couldn't see anyone and every time I felt someone hovering over Andres, it made me feel uncomfortable. The building itself has a beautiful mural, which I appreciate. However, the interior decor is all bright white with harsh gold. The cement floors are cool, but otherwise the decor is overwhelmingly stark. I think a tattoo studio should be beautiful inside--especially because clients are necessarily forced to spend a lot of time there. It's a case of form following function: a place where people make art should itself be artistic. The stars are for ANDRES, who deserves a whole galaxy!
