Oxford St is by no means a part of the world where you'd be hard pressed to find a decent coffee. In fact I think if anyone tried to serve up a less than decent brew they'd be run out of town by locals wielding pitchforks. Swiss Bakerz, despite spelling Bakerz with a Z, is a quality supplier of both coffee and delicious tasty treatz (see what I did there?) I also love the imagery a Swiss bakery conjures up- of some Muppets-like Swedish (near enough) baker kneading dough and stamping cookies out the back of the store. My favourites: the mini gourmet chocolate crackles. If they come up with a similar version of fairy bread I will be a very happy chick.

This place is awesome! Swiss Bakerz is my local coffee stop and I've been coming here every morning (sometimes also in the evening) for years and I haven't had a bad experience. Never. The guys there can see me coming and make my skim latte the way I like it. Then there is the bakery, and I think I've tried everything there. So good!! My favourite is the decadent Bee Sting, you can't have it often but once in a while its a treat. The cream is fresh and the pastry is chewy and soft. Yum! The croissants are really good if bought in the morning, as are the muffins (the strawberry white chocolate is my fave). The creme brulee is nice too and you can ask them to torch the top. I never get a chance to try the lunch-time food (bagels, pies, soups) but I'll get around to it eventually. The dine-in area is small so this place is best for takeaway. Because the place is small it often gets overlooked by the other more vibrant places on Oxford St but please keep a look out for it. Its red, its Swiss and oh so delicious. Mmmmmm.....

Maybe we got here on an off time as our food was served by a very lackluster worker and it tasted very bland and the whole experience was quite forgettable. It was empty save for one other diner. We were ignored by all. My quiche was barely ok.

Bought the raspberry danish, almond croissant, sourdough loaf and beesting all for around $15. Not to sound douche-y, I've had my share of danishes and croissants in Sydney and overseas...and this seriously has to be the best ones I've had my whole 30-odd years of life! The almond croissant is a nice balance of crunchy flaky pastry and almond mill, while the danish has the same with its nice jam middle instead of the almond mill of course! The beesting we didn't have till we got home and that was well up there, worth coming back for. It held up after a few hours in the car and still tasted pretty good! The sourdough wasn't too sour-y for me and that suited me fine. Hubby disagreed and found it quite sour-y, so I may have been having an off day for sour stuff. He still rates it as good with a good flavour to it, describing also as a 'meaty' bread! Had it for dinner with some pâté, Brie and deli meats which worked really well and filling for dinner! The service was friendly and helpful which is a plus (of course) ! Definately cross the city to come back here again and again.

I often call into Swiss Bakerz because they make a great cappuccino and mocha (sometimes fantastic depending on who makes it). They make the best muffins, particularly the strawberry muffin which is gooey and yummy - but the chocolate and apple muffins are very good too, I don't think my friends will want to go with me again as I keep stealing bits of their muffins. The great thing about the Swiss Bakerz is they are a cut above your average bakery, offering devilishly good Cream Brulee, Chocolate Ganache, Bee Stings, I could go on and on, lots of chocolate, lots of praline, lots of almonds. The atmosphere is not so great the kitchen opens out onto the dining area, but it is more for takeaway really and who cares as long as the food is good. I do like half headless cow painted like a Swiss flag hanging off the wall though. Everyone seems to come in to buy sourdough, so it must be good, I will have to buy a loaf sometime, but for now I will stick with the sugar.

A caffeine hit in the afternoon is good for many reasons including breaking up the monotony of what can only be described as a long long day of work. And so began my love affair with the Swiss Bakerz on Oxford St and my addiction to an afternoon coffee that is generally accompanied by a snack of some sort. The coffee order doesn't change but my side dish can vary from anything like a white chocolate and strawberry muffin, to a brownie although I'm yet to sample the Creme Brulee. I try appease my sweet tooth and they certainly cater for that although there are other options like soups, pies and baguettes if you're after something heartier. You can dine in and enjoy your time, or take away if you need to rush back and show face with the boss. For the record, if it became a choice of the Swiss Bakerz or the boss, I know only to well what would get my vote.

I'm a foodie, NOT a shopper!…read more After walking around Sydney's CBD, we visited the famous Queen Victoria Building, a late 19th-century Romanesque Revival marketplace that is now a shopping mall filled with high-end boutiques and eateries. We crossed George Street to The Strand, where we were in search of the world-famous patisserie, Black Star Pastry. Although I don't use IG or FB, I heard about Black Star Pastry's Strawberry Watermelon Cake while reading an old New York Times article about this Australian patisserie, which declared this signature cake and most-requested cake as "The World's Most Instagrammed Cake." So, I made Black Star Pastry a destination during our pre-cruise stay in Sydney. We followed the directions posted on The Strand's directory to Black Star Pastry and ogled the artistically and attractively decorated cakes while zeroing in on the Strawberry Watermelon cake slices lined up next to the Raspberry Lychee and Mango Yuzu cake slices. Honestly, all of the cake slices looked lusciously delicious, but our taste buds were craving a refreshing slice of Strawberry Watermelon. We selected the cake slice, and the amicable countergirl neatly packaged it and asked if we needed eating utensils. Of course, we needed and wanted eating utensils as we dreamed about digging into the cake at their dining counter right away. My husband rushed me to finish taking photos, and he jabbed his fork into the tender yet juicy cake. Before I knew it, he unassembled the cake slice to reveal a fresh-cut slice of juicy, ripe, and sweet watermelon, light rose-scented cream, tender cake, and was topped with fragrant rose petals and fresh strawberries. He claimed it would be easier to eat because the cake slice was about 3" high and looked like it would've toppled when pierced from top to bottom. Yeah, it was HIS "thing" about eating this cake, I decided to take a bit of the top layer, then a small slice of the watermelon bottom layer together. It truly was refreshing, light, and not overly sugary. The lightness and flavors of this cake seemed like it might have been low-cal, but even if it wasn't, who cares when you're on vacation?!

Nice looking baked goods with a tight seating area. Too bad the taste of the food did not match the appearance. The chocolate croissant had about a snack size candy bar's worth of chocolate in it. The beef filling inside the meat pie had dried up a bit and was quite salty. I've had much better meat pies from frozen food sections at way less than half the price.

Haven't been back to either of the aforementioned shops since then. I always seem to get a combination of some of my favorite items: red bean buns-not to be confused with their red bean "paste" buns, which are thicker and sweeter-, custard buns, egg tarts, plain polo buns, and taro polo buns. There's all range in price $1.00 ~ $2.00, and I definitely prefer their versions to the ones found in other shops as these ones are less sweet and more generous with filing. Also, please be on the lookout for their pre-close specials, where they bag a few assorted items for a hugely discounted price in late afternoon around 5-6pm!
