I love the location. Right at the edge of the grove makes it accessible for a quick stop when on the go. The interior is allllll zen. Tons of natural light with natural tones, sleek lines, and ample room to study. The coffee is solid. Not the best in stl, but definitely in the 75% percentile range-- which is good in my opinion given how many great spots there are. The only thing that was slightly strange was the worker did not seem happy to take my order. I just got done exercising so i was a bit sweaty but it was early on a sunday so i was the only one ordering. No line or anything. They didnt ask me how i was or anything, i was greeted with "what do you want" in a mundane tone, and no smile. I am not sure, a bit peculiar but not bad service. Let's talk about the crime against humanity they tried to pass off as "matcha." WHY. WAS. IT. BROWN??? Matcha is supposed to be a vibrant, gorgeous green--add strawberry syrup and it should look like a TikTok aesthetic drink, all green and red. Instead, this was a muddy mid-brown, like someone stirred pond water with a cough syrup straw. I've had matcha from bougie cafés, gas stations, even sketchy strip malls, and NEVER have I seen it come out looking like swamp sludge. What dark sorcery are they brewing back there?! And don't even get me started on the food. The "egg" wasn't an egg--it was a microwaved, frozen puck in plastic. The bagel was so old it probably remembers the dinosaurs. The hashbrowns? Tiny frozen cubes that tasted like sadness. Forty. Dollars. For a meal so inedible it went straight to the trash. I wouldn't feed this to my worst enemy. The service (4/5) was very good and accommodating for special add ons like oat milk, etc. The coffee (3/5) was just average. They have smaller tables available if you are working on your own but they are too small for two people to both have laptops out. Stopped in here for the first time while in The Grove-- what a neat place! The decor and ambiance is lovely- the owner was working behind the counter- very friendly, welcoming and helpful! There is ample seating for working, meeting with a client etc or just taking a break. We had the cold brew, a croissant, a cafe latte and a piece of the pecan cake- the food was good and the coffee items were great! Such a great addition to the St Louis coffee scene! The sizing is great for the price and I really enjoyed the cold brew. It was a little more watered down then I usually like, but I still thought it was good. As for food- I ordered the bacon, egg, and cheese bagel. This was good. Nothing crazy special about it- I would say similar quality to Starbucks breakfast food, but perfect for what we needed. Sweetwaters is a brand new coffee shop that recently opened in the Chroma building in the heart of the Grove. It is really an exciting time for this vibrant St. Louis neighborhood as it continues to burst with development. In the five years I've lived here, I've seen such a transformation in the Grove, and it's so great to see businesses opening here, especially during COVID. I stopped by this bustling coffee joint after a lunchtime workout at PLNK in Central West End. I figured I would need a cool boost on a fairly warm day. I will admit I didn't really investigate much about Sweetwaters before I stopped in today. Knowing that Chroma was attracting so many cool local businesses like Seoul Taco and Chao Baan, I just assumed that this was also a new local concept. Upon walking up to the entrance I was a little bummed to realize that this seemed like a chain. After a quick search on my phone, I found that there are quite a few Sweetwaters across the country (with a high concentration in Michigan.) The inside is somewhat unremarkable. Generic tables and chairs scattered around the coffee shop. There was some interesting art strewn about the space. It was also somewhat confusing as to where you were to get in line to order. The flow wasn't very clear and the baristas didn't greet you as you walked in. Since I had just worked out, I wasn't really looking to partake in one of their sandwiches or other offerings. There was quite a large selection. I will say that I probably wouldn't order one of their pastries. They looked mass produced and gave the impression that they were probably pretty dry. The drink menu seemed to be much more focused on coffee drinkers who are looking for sweet lattes that use tons of fake flavors to mask the taste of the actual coffee. In fact, when I ordered a cold brew they asked me if I wanted it sweetened. Um. No? I'm one of those people who drinks coffee because the actual taste is something I crave, it's not about the energy boost. The cold brew was about as generic as the interior of the shop. Nothing remarkable about the drink. It was also fairly weak. The drink seemed to be more like ice coffee as opposed to cold brew. Since this is a fairly large chain of coffee shops, I don't know if the drink was brewed in house or if it is mass produced and sent to the stores. Post COVID, I could see this being a place to briefly meet people to talk about business. It's also fine if you're looking for a quite latte and it's the easiest to get to. We had recently visited this Ann Arbor, MI based coffee shop's newly opened franchise in Austin and heard all about their training, quality control and care. When we spotted the logo, we had to give this location a try while driving through StL yesterday. We had a wonderful experience - from the friendly greeting as you walk in to the clean and modern aesthetic, to the well lit and spacious seating, simplicity in ordering and promptness in delivering a quality coffee. We got to meet the owner as well and she was a sweetheart! You could tell she was passionate and wanted each customer to have a positive experience. Yes, it's a chain, but I don't hold that against Sweetwaters-- especially since they're based in my home state of Michigan, and this location is locally owned. I love their full menu with everything you expect in a coffee house plus a few delightful surprises thrown in for good measure: think French Vietnamese au Lait and dirty cold brew (#highlyrecommend)! Sandwiches and pastries are good as well. Service is prompt, friendly, and one of the things I appreciate most, patient: they don't bug you while you're delightfully considering your choices. The dirty was a pleasant surprise and would definitely Recommend to someone that doesn't drink their coffee black. Food- I can't speak on the food because we didn't try anything, but I wanted to note there are food options here. Service- staff was friendly and made us feel welcome. There was a bit of a wait to get our coffee , but they were moving as fast as they could and we came in at a busy time. My wife brought me to this bright, clean coffee house, which she and her theater friends often use as a meeting spot. I see why they like it - well lit, with an abundance of seating, and free wi-fi, easy street parking. But for me, the big question nowadays is whether a cafe makes a great decaf -as my cardiologist took me off caffeine a year ago. That was the only negative about our visit - no decaf, and the baristas were uncertain when I instead ordered an americano. Perhaps it was the time of our visit , a Saturday afternoon, but for whatever reason my order apparently caused some consternation. When I got there my order wasn't ready because she said someone had mixed up the donut flavors and they were trying to sort out the flavor I had asked for. I ate my donuts while I waited on them to finish my latte. Two of mine were the Berry flavor I ordered and one tasted like plain. Both flavors were dry and definitely didn't taste very fresh. I wouldn't get them again. My iced latte was decent but the espresso flavor wasn't that apparent or strong. I would like to come back and try their Vietnamese coffee as not a lot of places offer it. While the interior is nice here, the matcha latte drink we got was WAY too weak. It tasted like sweetened milk that had been steeped with just a small amount of a green tea bag. It did not seem to use real matcha powder, and if it did, it was very minimal. Hardly any green tea flavor came through. Their prepackaged whole bean coffee bags were also exceedingly expensive.
