After purchasing a Christmas cookie event as a birthday gift for my sister a few months ago. I was excited to do one with my husband. I booked the Conversation Heart Cookie, aka "Creator's" conversation heart cookie class lol, which was emphasized at the beginning and twice during the class. The class came with 6 cookies to decorate and a beverage from the Hopfly Brewery. Laura and the ladies taught us how to put filler as a background on the cookie and other neat little tricks to do. The icing was really tasty and went well with my mango passion fruit cheesecake blender drink. I think the class and brewery was a good idea. But, I honestly did not like the fact that I paid $60 for this event that was diluted by the highlight of "The Creator's " being on set for free with a guest. I think there should have been a separate private class for them vs the way it was done. I get this is the New way to spread the word about your business. But it should not out shadow your paying guest. Being mindful is big in my book. read more

Looking for a fun, at home, quarantine activity? Check these guys out. They have cookie decorating kits that come with video instructions to help you along the way. When they released their Friends themed kit, I had to try it. I've been wanting to try a class in person for a while, but I haven't gotten around to it yet so this was a fun way to try it out. Most of the kits online are $55 (there are some cheaper, not sure what differentiates the price). Add on shipping and it's not super cheap. Delivery price depends where you live. We paid $15 or they ship anywhere for $20 (it's cheaper if you live closer). You can also pick it up from them, but their pickup times are very limited--two work days in the middle of the day. My only complaint about the delivery process is that they ring the doorbell and make you come to the door to get it. Everything else I get delivered will leave it on the front porch so it's contactless. I tried not coming to the door, but they just kept ringing the doorbell. I think this is a pretty basic oversight right now. Other than that, we had a lot of fun decorating our cookies. We were a little impatient waiting for them to dry between steps, but I was surprised how well they turned out. I liked that they give you everything you need to make them so it's really easy. Ours was a beginner class and I think that was fairly accurate. We knew nothing and it still turned out fairly well. We put them in the fridge and decorated three days after they were delivered. You can freeze them for up to three months. If you're looking for something fun and different to do while stuck at home right now, give this a try! read more

Their classes are fun, educational, and delicious -- perfect for a girls' night out, date night, mother-daughter time, and anyone looking for an enlightening outing! Such a fun time! I went with a friend and we took a bbq sweets class. We made key lime pie, banana pudding, and s'mores cookie cups. I had sprained my ankle prior to this class and I had a scooter - I was able to get around no problem. I ended up in the front row so that I didn't have to move back and forth. Similar to a prior review, I paid $40/each for a cupcake class for two. My impression was that for $40 we would make the cupcakes from scratch - start to finish process. Especially since the price alone is more than what it would take to make cupcakes at home. Nevertheless, that was not the experience. Cupcakes were already made - paid just to put icing on the cupcakes. What annoyed me was that they didn't demonstrate the icing at the main center table, enabling everyone the ability to see. Instead they demonstrated on 3 different tables on the other side of the room. I doubt I'll ever return. Definitely felt like it was a waste of $80. read more

I went for the cupcake decorating class and it was $40. Was it worth $40 in my opinion? No. Not discrediting the time the bakers used to do all of this but the experience was lackluster for me. I thought we would get the opportunity to bake the cupcakes along with decorating them but that wasn't the case. Also I am not a big fan of chocolate cupcakes and we were given 3 chocolate and 3 vanilla cupcakes. Luckily my friend switched cupcakes with me. It was cool to decorate them I guess. The marshmallow to me was not that good at all and tasted like rubber. I didn't even eat any of my cupcakes and ended up giving them away. read more

Looking for an at home baking class? Sweet Spot has awesome take home baking kits. I tried the French macaron baking class for my Mother's Day gift. They give you everything ingredients wise pre-measured and they include a video for the class. I added on baking sheets because our home ones were ancient. They suggest using silicone mats and a stand mixer. I am a beginner with macarons but I have some casual experience with baking. I loved the format and the steps in the how-to video from the chef. I enjoyed the video class and watched it multiple times. That said I do wish the video had included more how to advice on piping the macarons. That was where I struggled in the class. The pluses are the ingredients are all included--including buttercream and ganache--and the steps are organized well. And the macarons' dough was delicious! Even if my macarons look crazy, they taste phenomenal!! They suggest using the ingredients that week or freeze for up to 3 months. My hubs did the pickup that you can schedule when you pay online. I had been looking forward to taking a Macaron class here for quite a while. When we finally found one I was so excited. I booked the class for 2 people. When we arrived, I was a bit surprised to find that we only had one set up between the two of us. I didn't get a discounted rate for 2 people, but we only did the same as an individual would do, which bothered me, especially since these classes are not inexpensive. We had to 'share' in doing the activities, which would have been fine had we only paid for 1 person. The other thing was that we didn't have anything to do with the actual baking of the macarons. That is an important step in knowing the proper way to make them, but we weren't invited over to the oven at all to see how they should look when coming out of the oven. For the fillings, we made one, but that was all. I am fairly certain that the class description said that we would be making two fillings. Again, not a huge deal, but if that's what it says in the description, that is what I expect. We had fun at the class, but I would recommend signing up separately and not at the same time because otherwise you really are paying for 2, but only getting the experience for one person. read more

Her classes are super informative without getting super jargon-y, and typically don't last more than 2 hours (depending on your class) like other baking/cooking classes around Charlotte do -- so they can be weekday friendly. And of course the best part: you take home all that you create! Jossie is super knowledgeable (having worked as a parry chef for Heirloom, The Asbury, and Block & Grinder before starting Sweet Spot, and studied culinary in France), so she has so many helpful tips and tricks up her sleeve that she shares in her classes. She also has other bakers and staff members teaching classes (you can see who the teacher is in the description of the classes on her site). Jossie and her staff keep the learning kitchen area clean and tidy. It's easy to know what is what and how to use things with their instructions. Jossie is an amazing host and her staff is so nice and welcoming. Sweet Spot Studio CLT was so much fun! Jossie, the owner and renowned pastry chef, offers innventive, fun and easy to follow classes for beginners and trained bakers alike. I came last night with my girl friend for a Girls Night Out! As someone who recently went gluten free for medical reasons I was so excited when I saw that Jossie was offering an allergen free baking class! My friend and I chose a spot in the middle of the studio. We each had aprons and a kitchen aid mixer to share. Once the whole class was there, we began at the front of the room. Jossie presented how to make the batter for the gluten free cupcakes that we were making. Then we went back to our stations and mixed our own batter. We had options to add in flavorings like kahlua, vanilla bean paste, lemon peel, and various other flavors. Then once we were done making the batter she walked us through how to use a pipping bag to more accurately fill the cupcake liners. Her studio sous baker loaded the cupcakes into the oven for baking. Once those were baking we started to make our dairy free chocolate ganache. She taught us to heat coconut milk and pour it over our dairy free chocolate chips and whisk until combined. We put the ganache aside and began on our tahini filled chocolate chip cookie. This skillet cookie was made with dairy free chocolate chips, and date sugar! We made them in little personal pie tins. Next we made strawberry stuffed coconut macaroons. I wasn't as crazy about these, but they were still tasty. Lastly, we topped our cooled cupcakes with our chocolate ganache and decorated with sprinkles. All treats were made using vegan butter too - and as a hardcore butter advocate... I can say that these treats came out AMAZING, even with a lack of my favorite ingredient. I think this is the best cupcake I have ever had! Jossie is SO sweet, she is doing a ton for our community and it turns out we're from the same area back in MD. So happy to support her and her business!
