Carol's Coffee & Art Bar - Egg salad "DaVinci" on whole wheat (detail)

Let me tell you, Yelpers, there's a reason why Carol's has a rare nearly 5.0 rating from 70…read morereviewers as of today. Or perhaps I should say "reasons" why. To start, this place has such a genuine small-town vibe, it's almost surreal. Live music, artwork from locals, the hand-lettered signs on the bakery items on display. I've made it a custom to stop in Owego about once a year, although I missed it last year. This year, I went about 20 miles (each way) out of my way to visit this gem of a coffee, sandwich, and bake shop. I found a parking space right in front, and immediately the live singer/guitarist could be heard from a speaker at the front door, but unobtrusively, delivering a very professional sounding "Brown Eyed Girl." I think that was the same song he was singing when I last visited two years ago. I was greeted by the staff like I had only been away two days, and the singer glanced my way and nodded a welcome as though he, too, remembered me. The coffee mug is perhaps the largest I've ever seen, and the DaVinci egg salad sandwich was also generously executed (recommendation: spring for the olives for an extra 25 cents). On the way out, I picked up two Dream Bars (a peanut butter and a coconut) to prolong the Carol's experience for just a bit. Yes, there's a reason, too, why they're called Dream Bars.

The menu, of course, also has "Carol's Favorite 'Comfort Food' Sandwiches" on the menu, all named after famous artists. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm a huge Van Gogh fan, so I ordered the "Van Gogh" sandwich that comes with oven roasted turkey breast layered on sourdough bread and lettuce, tomato, and mayo. The sandwich was good, but I have to say that proportions of the ingredients felt a bit off. I also noticed during the prep of my plate that the chips came from opening a bag (a bulk version similar to ripple chips you'd just buy at the store). In a cafe space like this, you can't necessarily expect people to be making everything from scratch... but I think it's just helpful to note to keep expectations in line. The drink that I ordered was made well (their beverage selection is at the very back of the menu). You can definitely tell that this is a community space, and it seemed like a number of locals filtered in throughout the lunch. There are notes on the tables that advise of a 90 minute limit for sitting at the table (not something I've ever actually seen before), and there's wifi available for use by customers. Perhaps an awkward experience was just related to the overall service? You grab a menu and choose your table if you're dining in, but you end up paying at the counter. Personally, if I'm going to sit down to eat then I'd prefer to have the check brought to the table and pay that way. The space is a bit cramped by the counter, so it seems like it'd benefit to minimize the foot traffic that has to wait there. And perhaps this is silly, but upon paying for the lunch, the server handed me my receipt and said "Just sign here", and then seemed to be somewhat... abrupt? I feel like I'm pretty low maintenance when dining out, but it just left me going "OH. Okay. Time for me to get out of the way" (it's worth noting that at the time, there was nobody waiting around, or to get to, the counter). Still, it was enjoyable to stop at Carol's Coffee & Art Bar. It's a more unique space with nice offerings.

We flew in from FL for a family birthday Party (one year old). On Friday, the girls were baking…read morecookies and tasked us with picking up the cake (and cannoli's).....and cautioned us over and over to be careful (lol). The cake was beautiful, neither of us wanted the responsibility to handle it.....our wives had scared us....one of the awesome ladies in the shop loaded the cake in the back seat of the truck for us. We arrive at the Party site....mission accomplished...sort of. As I exited the Truck, the family dog, a very excitable short haired German Pointer met me at the door. I got out to greet my niece I had not seen yet (leaving the door open) A moment later, I heard DOG and CAKE in the same outburst. You can do the math. Luckily, his damage (and taste of cake) was not a total disaster. My niece was upset, we assured her....we will fix it....not knowing if we could. Back on the road and put in a 911 Call to Whipped Sweet. Getting later in the day...there was no time for another cake. We arrive, Owner says...."this isn't bad...I can work with this, we expected much worse." She says " give me 10 or 15...be right back". The theme of the Cake was "One happy Camper". She sliced away the areas affected by the Dogs sweet tooth and created a river/waterfall of icing down the front of the cake. It looked amazing. She wanted no additional compensation....obviously a gratuity was in order. You just don't get that type of service these days....The cake and cannoli's were delicous.....and the shop had another story to add to the list. Highly recommend this spot...great people, great products. Support your local shops

Although it is officially the year 2019 (Happy New Year once again to everyone), my heart is still…read morew/the 2018 holiday season -lol. What can I say other than I absolutely love that specific time of the year! I sometimes reminisce before moving forward and posting a few additional holiday-oriented reviews is on my to-do list before moving full steam ahead into 2019. It is imperative that Sweetly Spolied Treats is highlighted..This company definitely satisfied me + my family's sweet tooth with fantastic tasting cupakes during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday. It all started in October 2018 as Sweetly Spoiled Treats Owner/Baker Asia Grant-Williams had a section displaying some of her desserts at the "Damn Gina"! Day Party/Pop-Up Event at Taj Lounge in Manhattan. I purchased a Strawberry Cupcake and a "90's themed" Sugar Cookie. From the moment I took a bite of that Strawberry Cupcake my life has never been the same....let's just say that I became hooked.for lack of a better word-lol. Once sending an email raving about the cupake it was not much later that I ordered a dozen Strawberry Cupcakes ($36 - $3 per cupcake) as part of our Thanksgiving dessert. Asia puts "love" into her desserts and these cupcakes had strawberry fruit inside and on top of the cupcakes. My family enjoyed them so much that one minute they were there and the next day they were all gone-lol. My brother requested more cupcakes which led me to placing a Christmas order for two dozen cupcakes ($ 72). One dozen Strawberry Cupcakes and One dozen Assorted Cupcakes that included Caramel, Red Velvet, Vanilla and Chocolate Cupcakes... Asia decorated/adorned then with supercute holiday themed shaped toothpicks and packaged them in neat clear cupcake boxes. My favorite are the Strawberry and Caramel. Asia creates rich, moist, fluffy cupcakes that have delectable frosting and are scrumptious! The ordering process was easy as I simply emailed Owner Asia Williams and she then sent online invoices so that I could make payment via credit card. She also delivered the cupcakes to my home which was much appreciated. Valentine's Day is right around the corner and I have already started thinking about ordering some cupcakes for my loved ones.... Please check out Sweetly Spolied Treats webite aa well as the company's Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to get more information and see some of beautifully made cakes, cupcakes, etc. You will also see pictures of various flavored desserts such as Key Lime Pie Cupcakes, Samoa "Girl Scout Cookie" Cupcakes, etc. Desserts can be created for any and all special occasions. Sweetly Spolied Treats serves NY, NJ and the Pennsylvania area.
