I was so excited when I finally found this little shop after wandering around the time zone that is Afflecks Palace. This place sells all the favs from dip daps, nerds and wham bars to 10 flavours of bon bons, midget gems, pineapple cubes, lager tops and so on and on and on and on..... all priced at 75p per 100g! They should change the saying from "cheap as chips" to "chip as the sweets in Retro Sweets in Afflecks Palace". A big surprise was the selection of Wonka sweets available. I have only ever seen a few varieties in Selfridges but this was just simply amazing! I can't even remember the names of them there were so many! We came away with a bag full of sweets for only £4 and were well happy! :) Shall be my new fav sugar haven.

Truly, there are other shops that might claim to have that traditional vibe, but I've yet to discover a more traditional-willy-wonka-oliver-old-school kind of sweet shop. As you got in you are surrounded by shelves literally packed with sweets in jars - barley sugars, aniseed balls, chocolate pennies, sugar mice, licorice buttons - I could go on endlessly. I think it was the nostalgia that made it so exciting. There were two counters where both shop assistants had scales and aprons and measured out portions of delight to the happy waiting customers. Prices were pretty reasonable considering, I'd guess, they have the monopoly on the market - certainly in Otley at least! I left with a quarter of aniseed balls and a quarter of shrimps. It has very cleverly stocked a mammoth range of sweets that most people will remember from their childhood. It means that most end up purchasing a paper bag of treats, purely down to the nostalgic sugary buzz it brings with it. They have all the retro style sweets such as bon bons of all varieties, rainbow puffs, dib dabs, cola bottles, fizz whizz popping candy, flying saucers, drum sticks etc etc etc....and they also stock some classier goodies such as stem ginger (my grandma's absolute favorite). The staff are very friendly, with their wide eyed sugary stares and massive grins that you imagine to be sticky to the touch. Willy Wonka eat your heart out. You can buy sweets or chocolates that you haven't seen for a while or stock up on all your favourites. I love the clear packaging your sweets are wrapped in to take home. Its also a great place to go to get those last minute gifts you forget about. they have sweetie gift sets made up, and some hampers, all at reasonable prices. these are usually seasonable so for example, at halloween, you can find little sets with halloween sweets and the same at christmas. It may be quite a small store, but the vast array of different kinds of sweets more than makes up for the cramped surroundings. the staff are really friendly and know everything there is to know about their sweets. which is ideal if you are buying fro someone with allergies.

You can even ask for 2 ounces, a quarter or half a pound of any sweets you desire, if you really want to go back down memory lane. Everything from Strawberry Bon Bons, Drumsticks, Sherbet Flying Saucers to Uncle Joe's Mint Balls never fails to impress. The smell of sweets as you enter and the rainbow of colours is truly fantastic. Plus, if you like ice cream, it's all handmade here and they offer many favourite and unique flavours. And the same applies to sweets too - some flavours were out of the ordinary, including Dandelion and Burdock favloured boiled sweets but as they sounded ever more odd, they sounded ever more exciting. Time to grab a bag and re-visit memory lane at the appropriately named Sweet Memories!

The first two things that hit me around the store were the pricing and the layout. Pricing: I found the store to be really expensive, to the point my jaw was literally dropped that they'd charge so much, with multiple drinks or even sweets often leaving you with not much change out of £5 or £10, I understand to get product from these countries there are import fees, and they have to make a profit but comparing some of the items, I've seen for under half the price in other retailers, these products might be "rare" as they are American, but compared to online retailers such as AmericanFizz and a similar store in Manchester, Over The Rainbow, this stores just an expensive mess. Comparing one item in particular, here a can of Arizona Iced Tea would set you back £3.99, the RRP in the U.S is 99 cents, meaning once converted into dollars you could buy FIVE and still have change, for the cost of buying one here - it also remains double the price of Over The Rainbow in Manchester. Store Layout: The store does feel a little cramped at times with small, narrow aisles, mainly down to the large pick and mix selection going right down to the middle of the store, combined with mini shelves all over, it makes the store quite offputting before you even look at the price tags. From the outside, the store looks exciting, modern, cool and enticing, but from the inside, it just doesn't match that, kind of like the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium, a beautiful stadium, perhaps one of the best in the country, only to get inside and to realise you actually have to watch Eric Dier and co play. Overall, despite being excited by this store after seeing it for the first time on a recent trip to Liverpool, the overall store layout and pricing is just really awful and off-putting, so I feel only a one-star rating is deserved here, which is a real shame.

The sweets are arranged in rows of jars and look so tempting and tasty you will be drooling as you attempt to order. The staff here are lovely and the seem to enjoy their job.
