The tour took place in Richmond and last for about 3 hours in which we visited 10 different restaurants and learned about the history of the city through the food. It was super interesting and tasty! Mashav has a great knowledge and information and she is super excited to share it! Through out the tour she always made sure we are having fun and that everything is ok. Michelle Exceeded Expectations for Wife's Birthday Party…read more My wife is hard to impress for her birthday. She doesn't like expensive gifts, but does food-centered events and adventures with our friends. I initially considered finding a cooking class somewhere and invite some of our friends but all the options seemed like a hassle and a bit impersonal. I then read about a chef that would take the class to your home and I thought - perfect. When I contacted Michelle she listened to my objectives and we determined that a cooking demonstration centered on paella would be perfect. In fact, she said that she will make the event an evening in Spain. The challenge was going to be making this a surprise, but Michelle coordinated with all of us, and my wife was totally caught off guard. That soon turned to delight to learn that she had an evening with her friends and learning about how to make paella ahead of her. Exactly what I had hoped for. Michelle served great appetizers, and then presented a special ham and gave a talk about the region in Spain it came from and why it was unique. The yard was decorated with a huge LOVE sculpture, and every detail of the evening was well thought out. Dinner was for 11, and she managed to do the demonstration while coordinating all the activities needed for the approaching meal. Our guests loved the demonstration and Michelle talked about ever y aspect of the process. I certainly learned a lot. Dinner was fabulous. We had a garden salad, much of it from her garden. Then to the centerpiece, the paella. Everyone agreed it was delicious to say the least. Michelle made each guest comfortable, and everyone got personal attention as she juggled activities in the kitchen. As the evening came to an end, my wife kept repeating how pleased she was, and how she loved sharing this special evening with some of our closest friends. I could not be more pleased. After thanking her for such a wonderful experience, we went to bed while Michelle cleaned up. When we woke up the next morning everything was in order with some tasty leftovers in our refrigerator to savor over the next few days. Very cool. As I declared at the dinner, Michelle made my dreams come true for my wife that made my dreams come true. I stopped by this center, after touring five other centers, with very little in the way of expectations. However, after a short tour was thrilled to have found this center. From that moment on everything has been smooth sailing. Of course there have been issues that have popped up (mostly on my part) but Carrie and her staff were there to help me figure it out and support me every step of the way. Carrie went out of her way to get to know me as well as my children; and this seemed to be the norm. She was very hands on when I saw here; in fact she often was not in her office because she was somewhere in the center being a hands on director; leading by showing not telling. You can tell her leadership management style works as many of the staff members I encountered seemed to be very happy to be working at the center. Speaking of these staff members - I had the dream team of members working with my twin 2.5 year old daughters! Miss Ana, Miss Coquitha and Miss Nicole were absolutely amazing! In fact, my girls often came home talking about the staff members more than they did other students! The staff members were always warm and friendly at drop off - and took time with me at pick up those first few weeks when I was getting my footing as a mom of daycare kiddos. It's hard leaving your children with someone; even if they are trained. These three ladies made that transition SO much easier for me. I work in the ECE field as well in a different dynamic; but I was always learning something new from Miss Ana or Miss Coquitha. Both teachers have their own strengths; but together they are a power team! I would ask questions or voice concerns and they were always right there to support me with ideas and suggestions. Now; the curriculum. I would have to admit I was slightly skeptical about it when we joined. It looked 'okay' but I knew my girls would learn through play no matter what - so at this age I was more concerned about their social skills and language development. Let me tell you - was I pleasantly surprised!! Not only did my girl's language and social skills jump - they sky rocketed!! They matured so quickly and were talking SO much more. They also were telling me all about their themes & curriculum based projects!! The themes are age appropriate and the activities are well thought out and planned. No need to wonder what your child does even if they don't tell you; there are pictures EVERYWHERE. I noticed one other person commented about the drop off experience in the morning in the common room. I'd like to clarify from my experience with this time period. First off - I would say that drop off at any daycare is hard for younger children; but I never saw "all the 2 year olds" crying. Were there some crying? Sure. But, the staff was right there giving hugs and reassuring them they'd be okay, have fun and see their parent later. Are there a lot of kids in that room? Definitely; but I'm kind of glad my girls got that opportunity for a few reasons. 1) It gave them a time to be with older kids who modeled good behavior and also presented as great language models. 2) It gave them (and me) a glimpse into what it would be like when they moved out of the younger classrooms and into preschool. Numbers go up the older your child gets due to the more independence they build. It's a natural progression and this KinderCare fosters independence! Finally; this room is fully staffed for the ratios. There are plenty of teachers for the amount of students in there. This is not their 'learning' focused part of the day - this is when the kids are just getting adjusted from being at home to being in school; the demands on them are less. It's more about independent play and peer interactions. I could go on, and on and on about how much our experience at the Brentwood KinderCare meant to my girls and myself; but these are the most important positives for me. The staff was caring, got to know my kids and their needs, communicated with me effectively and the school always felt welcoming and warm. There were times I stopped in unannounced or late/early - and nothing was ever different - just the same great care I saw when I dropped off/picked up every day. I loved this center and wish I could've taken the entire staff with me when we moved!!
