Sadly the place is closing just before Christmas. The beer is always cold. I'll give them that. I'll never kick a horse thats down and gasping its last breath.The owner/chef is amicable and struggling to keep his chin up after trying to keep his little bar afloat. I'll miss the regular folks who kept the lights on and the neighborhood dive bar open. RIP Sweet Fire. Good luck in the future MOMO. Claremont is a tough town to try anything. My friends and I showed up to order some barbecue and literally 3 sodas and apparently it was such a hassle for the bartender and cooks he felt the need to complain to each customer who walked in after us that "there were fucking 9 children here " word for word from the bartender to probably regulars at the bar. Mind you we were all responsible and respectful individuals that just wanted to have dinner after mini golf. This was highly disrespectful and rude we walked straight out after paying for our drinks. We would never recommend this place to anyone at anytime. Do better. read more

Sweetfire Short answer, don't waste your time. This place is more of a small local bar and a guy in the back has a little bit of a side passion for BBQ. First 2 times I've tried this place they told me they were out of almost everything and they were only open for 1 hour, parking lot empty. Third time they were out of Brisket and I figured that was the best I was gonna get. Ribs were small and microwaved and tasted like regular boiled pork. The rub on it was interesting. Definitely a Brown Sugar, Nutmeg, Clove, Ginger, Sage kinda vibe. Enjoyable unique sweet rub but still didn't do much for the rib. Mac and cheese was meh. Not completely cheese sauce goo but pretty much. No spices not even some black pepper. Chili wasn't great either. Very very basic if you ask me. Pulled pork was Okay. Not stringy, more chopped but dry. I think the most enjoyable part of the meal was the mild BBQ sauce. Just hit right. I liked the sweet too but it was a bit too sweet and thick. read more

This is a DIVE BAR with DIVE BAR food. The bartender was very friendly however. If you are going here for FOOD you have to be desperate. It was awful except for the fries. I ordered the #1 Brisket Combo dinner which included coleslaw and fries. The best part about the meal was the french fries. The brisket was very fatty but it was tender and tasted ok I guess, the mild sauce they included was kinda flavorless. The coleslaw came out at exactly 1 oz and was Disgusting. Kinda like they thew some cabbage together with oil and called it a day. No pride in the food here. Bottom line is we will never go back again. read more

What a great find! This hidden gem is located off the main drag along Mulberry Street. Sweet Fire BBQ has the atmosphere of a local roadhouse bar, which houses the full bar and table & booth seating in one room (dim lighting). The walls are decorated with old pictures and signs and there's a pool table and a CD jukebox too. This place seems to be popular with the bikers, who seem to know where to go for good food. The menu offerings is not extensive, but pretty straightforward, primarily BBQ fare including ribs, smoked chicken, beef brisket, and pulled pork, platters and sandwiches and homemade sides too. They also have appetizers, chili, salads, quesadillas, messy sandwiches, hot dogs (Hebrew National), and burgers. Homemade desserts are available too. On Wednesdays, it's All You Can Eat Pulled Pork ($9.95). I stopped in for takeout and ordered some a la carte items including a Pulled Pork Sandwich ($6.50) with small sides of Smoked Mac & Cheese ($1.95), Cole Slaw ($1.25), and the KIXX Maple Corn Muffin ($1.00). I was also going to get the popular Mom's Baked Beans, but they ran out. The service was efficient and the food was ready for me in about 10 minutes. All of the food I had was excellent. The pulled pork (sweet BBQ sauce on the side) was very tender, mostly lean meat and minimal fat. The smoked mac & cheese had a rich smoky cheese flavor as advertised. The cole slaw had a nice twist, which had a sweet taste with minced red cabbage, carrot, dried cranberries, and pecans. The maple corn muffin had a good coarse texture of corn bread with the right amount of sweetness. Overall, a very enjoyable dinner. Sweet Fire BBQ is a definite must stop on my future rides through the Upper Valley. read more

I stopped in Sweet Fire BBQ for a weekday lunch. It was noontime and it was a very quiet. I was the only patron inside. The only staff person was friendly and assisted me in ordering. A local bar, with kitschy decorations everywhere, this place appears to need a good cleaning or an update, and it was very dark inside. The BBQ was just okay. I went for a pulled pork sandwich, which came dressed simply with a bun and sauce on the side. Stale, tortilla chips also came with the sandwich. The pork was dry, and needed much sauce. It was however, good and tasty. They were out of coleslaw. How can a BBQ place run out of slaw? It was not even busy. I would go back again, as this is the only place to get decent BBQ in the area. A side note: They have a old Grand Union Supermarket lobster tank in the front, with 2 large Choi fish. Poor fish, it is sad to see them in such a small spot. read more

September 2014 update: Downgrade from 3 stars to 1 star,, This place as gone straight downhill in 4 years. I will leave it at that. So I stopped by on a Sunday in September as I was in the area heading back from my yearly bike trip to VT... I decided to give this place another shot, since I was craving BBQ, and I came here 4 years ago, and the BBQ was half decent. I walk in during the Pats game, order a beer, and ask for a menu. I am told the only food they are serving are chicken wings, no BBQ. But they just ran out of wings.. It will be about a 45 minute wait for the next batch. Ok, I am not Gordon Ramsey, but since when does it take 45 minutes for buffalo wings to cook? I look around, and there are a total of 8 people in the bar. Ok, 8 people in the bar, wings special during the Pats game, 1st quarter, and no food? This is NOT a good sign! If I didn't just order a beer, I would have walked out. The bartender was friendly, and I would have felt bad. I drank my beer and left. I am not sure how she keeps smiling working at this dump. It surely costs her money she could have made in tips. I check the website, and it makes no mention of just wings being served on Sundays. This will be my last stop here -- ever. Sadly new Owners got smacked by the Pandemic and there are not enough new reviews. Seriously the food has been upgraded greatly. Any review written before the Pandemic would be sketchy at best. Every summer when me and my partner come up from NYC we always make a point to visit Sweet Fire for excellent BBQ at unheard of prices. The brisket personal platter is what I crave most but the other meats are great too as are the sides. Back in the day they used to have free cornbread with REAL maple butter but I can understand why that might not have been sustainable for them. The other notable thing about Sweet Fire is the "alt" atmosphere which, in a town where there's a gun militia and Trump lawn signs abound, provides a welcome oasis. We are an interracial couple on top of being New Yorkers but we've always been welcomed. The main server, called Momo, is super friendly and passionate about BBQ so definitely chat him up and don't be intimidated by the tats and piercings! Beer also is dirt cheap. Not impressive. Sweet fire is a divey bar that just happens to serve BBQ. The only time I went in for BBQ, they told me that they hadn't made any that day (it was a Saturday). Of course, I wasn't thrilled about this. For this reason, I can't judge their food. However, mediocre BBQ cuisine is better than none at all. Other than that, it seems like a decent place to go to meet up for a couple drinks. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to go there when there are better bars in the immediate area. read more

I returned to Sweet Fire after spending a winter in Arizona. I was expecting very good to excellent barbecue based upon my previous visit. I was looking forward to this young pitmaster's New England twist on barbecue. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. It's NEVER a good sign when the barmaid hands you a menu and tells you that almost half the menu is "86." Yep, a barbecue joint that had no chicken, no burgers and the bbq beans I was hoping to try was now no longer on the menu. I ordered half a rack of pork ribs, the potato salad, the cole slaw and macaroni & cheese. The Good: The cole slaw has cranberries and a nice tang to it. It's somewhat finely diced, but the flavor more than makes up for any shortcomings. The macaroni & cheese is rotini with a multiple cheese sauce than is mild and at least one cheese in the mix that's stringy. I recommend the Mac & Cheese and the cole slaw wholeheartedly. The potato salad is somewhat bland but should make an excellent counterpoint to spicy barbecue. The service is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. This barmaid is a gem. The Bad: The pork ribs presented well; great bark and nice smoke. Unfortunately, the ends were dry as a bone and no amount of sauce -- or chewing -- could get me to swallow. The ribs were a bit overdone. Even the cartilage was mushy. While the meat readily fell off the bone, they were kinda dry as if they'd been around since last night and were reheated. I fear what could be a wonderful barbecue joint has entered into that restaurant death spiral. Half the menu is unavailable and one of it's best menu items is now unavailable. Being in bumble Vermont, I didn't have high expectations for this place, but after seeing the 3.5 on yelp, I became a little bit more hopeful. My table ordered a rack of ribs and beef brisket. The ribs tasted old as if they were simply heated up left overs from the weekend. Meat supply was definitely on the low end as my friend was who got the last serving of beef brisket said it was overly dry and unappetizing both inside and out. At one point, we were confused and that the waitress might have gotten our order wrong and served us beef jerky instead. I am optimistic that the food will be better toward the weekend, but that's a risk I wouldn't take. read more

I wanted to love the food here, being southern and all, but you just can't get BBQ in the north like they have in the south. My husband ordered the brisket platter with maple beans and I got the smoked chicken and mac & cheese. My meal was ok, but my husband was not a fan of his fatty brisket or baked beans. Maybe people like their beans differently here? To us, they didn't have the tang or spice to offset the sweetness. Tremendous food, great tunes and unbeatable service! Stopped in with three people about a month ago and made sure to return and bring more friends when making the same journey through the area today. MoMo the manager was more attentive than any waitstaff I can remember, and spent plenty of time at our table giving us top notch recommendations and making us laugh. Between the six of us we tried most of the menu. Everything was insanely delicious. Highlights were the ribs, mac n cheese with buffalo chicken dip and the pulled pork quesadilla with bacon. Don't leave without trying their jalapeño reduction (made in house) and for the drinking crowd beers are nice and cheap and MoMo makes a mean Caucasian (aka White Russian) with his own special twist. You can bet we'll be back in two weeks when our travels bring us through the area, and we'll be bringing more people with us. read more

I had never tried Sweet Fire before, but my high school reunion was coming up and we needed a caterer. I was making the arrangements from out of state and thought BBQ would be perfect for our party. I read all of the reviews, not all of them stellar but enough good that I thought I'd reach out to them. I myself arrange caterings and parties for an independent restaurant and appreciated the professional and quick response I received from Michael (manager). After several back and forth emails we worked out all the details and I decided to 'go with my gut' (no pun intended) and hire them...and I'm very glad I did! The food was exceptional (everyone raved), the delivery was on-time, and the staff (Josh and Blaize) had everything set up and ready to eat in no time! Unfortunately I have to rate it a 1 star because it wont let me submit without it. This restaurant is HORRIBLE!!! I wouldn't even let my DOG eat there. I had a quesadilla and it was greasy and fatty. When I opened it up, it looked like the ends cut off the pork and just thrown on there. My husbands beans were cold, old and nasty. No taste what-so-ever and he almost threw up. They didnt take it off the bill. I do not think that they should even be open because their food is probably a health code violation. The cook had to "step out" so our food took 45 minutes to cook. The waitress who was HORRIBLE said that she would give us chips and dip for the inconvience. We thought that was nice until we saw that all she had to do was open a bag of lays potato chips and mix a small amount of salsa and cream cheese in a bowl. Really? My 3 year old could do better then that! Their bbq sauces were nasty, not bbq at all. We stopped going back home to Maine and were extremely hungry from driving and wished that we had stopped at McDonalds or Burger King instead of this place. Was the only bar in the area open after 11 pm on a Friday night for this I commend them. However the place was dirty and reminded me of a basement hang out more than a bbq shack. So fair warning to all if u decide u want to try somewhere new to eat at DON'T go to sweetfire bbq. I had a terrible experience! Fist the menu is sooo confusing a SMALL menu should't be that conusing but this one was poorly done. Next we get our sodas and it has no taste and it wasn't just mine. So i'm sure the waitress overheard our reaction because she came over to check if anything was wrong. We told her the drinks were terrible and she offered to get us pepsi or diet pepsi she had in the bottle. We declined but got alchol instead. The pool table is soo close to the tables that when some people started a game it was so loud when the balls were rolling that it gave us a freaking jump scare. She came back with the drinks and mind u I ordered a grateful dead and it was a bit too sweet i was looking at the ice and noticed mold/dirt on it pulled it out to examine it. To say the least i didn't take more than the first drink. By this point I was grossed out and not sure if we should bother to eat the food WHEN we get it. Now I say when we get it because it took a long time before we got it. Now I ordered a burger with fries and to have replaced because normally it comes with nacho chips and I mean nacho chips which is kind of weird to serve with a burger but I asked if I could have fries instead and they said that would be fine I also asked for the hamburger to be done well. She came out a little while afterwards to tell me they didn't have any fries and that she didn't know about it and asked me what else I would want. I told her mashed potatoes would be fine. When the food came out the burger was not fully cooked and we also got nacho chips with the mash potatoes which I asked to replace it not have it as well which yes we did get charged for later. Granted I will give them that the burger size is very good it's a very big burger but if you're going to serve a burger that big then it needs to cook longer than apparently they were cooking it for, even though we did wait quite awhile for the food anyways. Overall the experience is terrible and I would not recommend going to sweetfire barbeque ever. I would give it 0 out of 5 stars. read more
