Presentation of my plate was delectable and of course, I ate every morsel of the food even though the portion was huge. The rest of the gang had the meat Sunday roast. Their gravy was even tastier. We were a large group of over ten, three adults and the rest are children ages 10-19. The waitress worked hard to accommodate us by jig-saw puzzling small tables together to make us comfortable and felt important. I love this place. Of course I love EVERYTHING about Wells.

However the female bartender was completely rude she did not want to take our drink order and when she did she had someone else give us our drinks and charge us. Mind you I hadn't said anything to this woman other than my friend and i wanted 2 beers. She then went on to call me fat and say that the men sitting at the bar would take her to town rather than me, rather rude and promiscuous language but ok we took our seats. Then I heard the guys at the bar say that the real issue was not that I was fat it was that I'm Mexican. So I didn't order any food for fear they would spit in it. My companion had already ordered so he ate it when it came out. When she brought the food she came back saying "sorry about that" and I said it's ok, but then she made it clear that she was talking to my male companion and not apologizing to me. I was also told that if I had any issues that I could leave. I get that this pub has been standing for many years but the owners are stuck in the 1500s if that's how they treat their customers. For reference I am Mexican American and I visited Wells in 2019, I would not recommend this pub to any people of color. I got way better service at another pub just around the block. I also visited London, Bath, and Wales and this was the only location where I was discriminated against.

I've stayed in several B&Bs in and around Wells (long story why...) and the Beryl is my favourite…read more It has several comfy drawing rooms downstairs, the rooms upstairs are spacious and a bit quirky, and the breakfast is excellent. They have an outdoor swimming pool for the summer months, and several fireplaces for the other three seasons. It's tricky to find - I think the address is "The End of Hawkers Lane" which is the only way to describe it. Just keep driving to the top of the hill.

A beautiful building in lovely surrounds, an outdoor pool (Summer months only), delightful (and large) rooms, a small point but wonderful thick and fast drying towels (and robes provided), broadband, decent breakfasts. The building is Jacobean in style and was completed in 1887 for a local paper mill owner. It was bought in 2006 by Martin Miller, the founder of Miller's antiques guides, and hosts an incredibly quirky and fascinating collection of antiques and curiosities. The grounds are equally fascinating with a small river, two bridges, a waterfall, statues, mirrors and numerous hidey-holes. In the evening there are lots of candles and other spot-lighting which all add to the effect. I was attending a wedding, so the food was all pre-ordered and cooked in bulk, so probably not the best way to sample the quality that I would hope would normally be available. The function food was only fairly good: a seafood cocktail looked fine, but needed a good squeeze of lemon to liven it up. The main of beef was extremely fatty, and the vegetables seem to have been sat around for way too long and had dried up. The pudding too was disappointing: the tarte tatin was overcooked and tasted bitter. The standard cooked breakfast was much better, well prepared and tasty, and on the second day I tried scrambled eggs with salmon and this too was good. The standard rate for the rooms is £165-265 depending on view and number of posts the bed has. Ours was at the bottom end of the price range and was quite nice, but was on the top floor and the plumbing to the shower really wasn't up to it. There was even a printed note on the wash stand explaining that you need to fiddle with the controls to get it to work, but the only shower you could have in our room was a scalding hot dribble. I visited several other rooms on the lower floors and these were generally to a high standard. Overall this is looking like a good place to stay, with some minor cautions about the food, but there is something I haven't yet mentioned, and that is the service. The service was friendly, but almost universally poor. The service during the meal took forever. A sign in the room says to ring reception for milk so you can make a hot drink. After 20 minutes we gave up and instead went downstairs for a drink - the milk never arrived. At breakfast a table for two had only one knife, one glass, one serviette, no spoons and no butter. On the help yourself buffet there were no croissants, pain au chocolate, cheese, ham or bread. As people left their tables having eaten breakfast tables were left un-cleared until people were standing around in the restaurant waiting for somewhere to sit. If the service was top-notch, this would be a five star venue with loads of Wow Factor, as it is I reluctantly can only give it the rating I have, a real shame.

I wouldnt go so far as to say family friendly, but our 3 kids were welcomed and had their own menu but I did worry about them making a lot of noise as it is quite a posh place. Delicious food - but the prices definitely match. It is a really unusual place, stuffed full of all kinds of weird stuff. On the trip to the toilets, we passed a cinema room full of scary porcelain dolls and the even the staircases were crammed with memorabilia including carved wooden birds and antique kids toys. The hotel looks very impressive - beautiful grounds and even a small pool. A lovely place in the Somerset countryside

The George Hotel and Pilgrims' Inn, originally known as the Pilgrims' Inn of Glastonbury Abbey, is the oldest purpose built pub in the South West. By the mid 1800s, it was known simply as the George Hotel, before a name change combined the two. It stands out on High Street not only because of its age, but it's an imposing edifice, three storied with mullion windows and a front facing of paneled stone. Above the arched front door are three carved panels bearing the coats of arms of Glastonbury Abbey and of King Edward IV. The original features continue inside with oak beams and an atmosphere which at times can only be called medieval.

I understand this has recently changed hands so we tried the food again and it was delicious. I had the steak and Ale pie and the banana and honey pancakes and my friend the Macaroni Cheese and we were both comfortably full and very happy with our choices. My only gripe was the only 2 choices of cider, Blackthorn and some other one I don't remember the name of. This is Somerset - go wild ;)! All in all though a really good experience - I would recommend this to anyone passing through
