Last month, our portable air conditioner leaked everywhere, so we needed to replace it quick. We decided to get a window unit instead with more BTU (which is working much better than the portable). The big box hardware stores (and Walmart) has no window units. One store had portable units but we didn't want to go down that path again. Called a few Ace stores and Swain's confirmed they had units available. They helped me load it in the car. The associate was courteous and helpful I will definitely go there more often for hardware needs. read more

Strange as it may seem, this is on my list of best places to go in Cape May. I always come here. It's unique compared to other city hardware stores. I always have fun looking around at what they've got, because it's more than just nuts and bolts. The service is good and so are the prices. I'm pretty particular when it comes to hardware stores, and Swain's has become my all time favorite. We're year-rounders, so I've been there when I was the only one in the place, and during the summer when it was swamped. They always provide friendly professional service, and their inventory selection is confirmed by the number of tradesman that shop there. They have always been dog friendly, and really helped our new pup get acclimated to her new life in Cape May. She's sort of become an unofficial mascot! Highly recommended. read more

Very convenient location from the center of Cape May Historic downtown area. The store also provides parking which is rare among all the local shops around. Here we found a good selection of beach umbrellas ranging from standard inexpensive ones you see in the gift shops and supermarkets to commercial ones that are built to sustain strong wind and frequent usage. Although the store is in a prime location, the prices seem to be reasonable and service is friendly. read more

Swains is a "find it all" store and the only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is even though I'm 60 years old they "track" me through the store like I'm going to steal something. If you asked me once if I need help and I'm ok, don't follow me around! I may just be getting ideas for future items to buy thats all! Wow is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about Swain's. Our yearly trip to Wildwood Crest always includes two or three nights in Cape May. While the women folk are shopping for candles and baskets, us men folk head off to Swain's. The old adage "A place for Everything and Everything in it's Place" describes Swain's exactly. Oh and don't tell the women folk they also sell candles and baskets but that's our little secret. The employees are more like family, they guide you right to what you need and if you are just browsing, they leave you alone. Prices are reasonable and as I said before they have everything. I have even said wow I didn't know they made something like that, I want that and I buy it. Now if they just had a bar in there and a few TV's, we would probably go to Cape May more often. Well can't wait till next summer for our yearly fix of Old Americana in Swain's, if the world ran like Swain's it would be a much nicer place to be. "Ace is the Place" could not be a better description for Swain's, they should be the Poster Children for Ace Hardware Stores. They should hold classes there for the Franchise. Swains is a real hardware store, darned few left -- knowledgeable helpful staff, a diverse inventory of really useful, quality tools and supplies. I'm always surprised at how well their buyers anticipate the needs of shore homeowners and visitors. Swains is one of the delights of Cape May.
