Warning to fellow pilots: Dr. Shih used a whisper test and a handheld screening device operated by his nurse as my FAA hearing evaluation. The whisper test has not been an FAA-recognized hearing standard for approximately 30 years, and a handheld device administered by a nurse does not meet the requirements for a valid FAA pure tone audiometric test. He then charged me an extra $40 for the time it took to process the improper deferral. The result was a cascade of FAA correspondence, a formal denial, and months of my time correcting a problem that should never have happened. I ultimately had to go to a second AME, obtain a proper evaluation, and go through the full reconsideration process with the Federal Air Surgeon -- all because of an invalid test. If you are considering Dr. Shih as your AME, I strongly recommend verifying that he is current on FAA hearing evaluation standards before your appointment. read more

Well, where do I start. I have been a patient of Dr. John Shih, DO since 2009. I was always pleased with the service though the actual consultations with the Dr were very brief. At the time I was married so my son and former wife were also patients, again no issue there. For the longest time, I could always count on visiting and getting my reported issues looked into and resolved. Fast forward to early May 2020 after going through a bad divorce and went to the Dr and asked for help with alcohol cravings and possible seeing a therapist. I was prescribed meds for the cravings and schedule an appointment with an associate of his firm that was a therapist. Well things were going well for about 5 or 6 sessions when suddenly, the therapist canceled without notice, now mind you if you do that they will charge you! The issue was "MONEY" what else yeah! I have insurance and they Dr's office had been billing it and were paid however, to the Dr's billing "dept" they filled with the wrong CODES and apparently did not file on time afterwards and my insurance denied their claim! So now the nightmare! I called several time the Dr's office, visited the office to try to fix the issue to no avail. Reached out to my insurance co, got the codes that were needed, called the Dr's office gave them the information, but STILL no resolution. It is August 2022 and the Dr's office has been relentless attempting to collect from me after their own failure to follow their own procedures! I have been a patient of Dr. Shih for over 20+ years. He always takes his time and is very caring. His staff is always friendly and helpful.

Im looking for another doctor, and why I keep coming back to this office is my own fault. I called to make an appointment, but could not get one for 3 days, which is fine. 20 minutes before the appointment, a staff member called and said, the office staff is leaving early and will be gone before you get here, so can you pay me over the phone? I was like, um ok, and she took my card info a ran the payment. When I got there, the lobby was pretty busy, but the office staff was still there, but I let them know I was there and that I had already paid. They got me back to the room pretty quickly, and the nurse let me know the doctor would just be a few minutes..... Yeah that was a bold lie, a full hour later, Dr shih came in. and it was obvious he didnt even look at the chart, asked me what was wrong. after 20 seconds, without giving too much personal info, scheduled me for an MRI. But in doing so, said it is going to be expensive. Which honestly left me thinking, but why am I getting an MRI, do I even need that? Is that all? He then left the room, not even shutting the door, started filling out a form, I could see him from the room. I was off the table and in the chair at that point, when he came in and says, " I guess I need to examine you". I asked," do you need me to get back on the table?" and he replies no and quickly listens to my chest for 3 secs, then says, take a deep breath, before I could even inhale, he stops listening and walks out, its like he did it so he can say he did it, but what knowledge he gained from it, I dont know. I mean you cant listen to a heart beat in 3 secs, and you cant hear someones lungs when they havnt even finished inhaling. He then goes into room next door, and that was it after waiting a full hour, no excuse, no sorry, no nothing. He didnt even examine me really and scheduled an MRI after a 20 sec once over. The nurse came in, gave me the MRI order, I asked if this would be covered under insurance and she replied I would need to call and ask , they didnt do that. I asked, where it was they were sending me, she said same place we send everyone, because its easy and not as expensive as other places. I asked, well is Dr shih coming back in here, because I had other questions. She said, no, but she could answer any questions I had. I said , thats ok. As we were leaving the room, she sighed and said, " oh Doctor Shih" in a not so positive way. I ask what was the matter, and she said, " He didnt sign the paperwork" so She walked off very frustrated. When she got back, I asked, can I receive the results directly from these tests myself, or do I need to come back here, because Im not happy with the service I was provided today. She seemed as though this was not the first time she has been asked this, and the other nurse was there as well. She said, you should receive results and Dr shih will also receive results. I will say this, I have seen other Doctors here, and I liked them just fine, the nursing staff is also very good, I have not been impressed with Dr Shih. Its hit or miss. read more

I have visited this Dr. four times. The last visit is the reason I will never be returning. First off I was overcharged accidentally. I went in to see the nurse and she asked why I was there. Dr. entered and said, I see you are here for pain in your face..."no I'm here for a cough that won't go away." I went in with a severe upper respiratory infection. I was told that I did not need antibiotics. Dr. John Shih, DO stated, "I wanted to help you not hurt you" So, I was given a prescription for cough syrup and told to be on my way. While leaving the front desk people were arguing. Four days later I end up at an urgent care. I had severe bronchitis on the verge of pneumonia. I was FINALLY given some actual medicine to cure the infection. 2 antibiotics, 1 steroid shot, and 5 day course of steroids. I feel this Dr. is severely condescending, has a terrible bedside manner, and will not prescribe the necessary medicine. I was made to feel like I did something wrong at a previous visit for needing heartburn medication. I'm done with this practice! read more

My entire family used to go to see Dr. Shih when we had problems. He used to be good several years back (when he was actually there) Now it's all about the $$ as he charges for everything and conducts tests that aren't needed. Example: I had something in my eye causes extreme irritation. He drew blood? and then proceeded to use all sorts of machines to check my eye. After all this he decided that he couldn't find anything and told me to just keep my eye watering to clean it out. 2 weeks later i received a bill for $700+ for testing services. I was not informed about this at the time and I now have it sitting on my credit. The office cannot explain over the phone. I requested my medical records for my our son who is disabled for his SSI paperwork and they want $20 to release those records. This place is a scam and Dr.Shih should remove himself from the Suwanee area. read more

I waited a while before leaving a review due to such crappy ones. After being a patient here for over a year I can honestly say that I LOVE THIS PLACE! I never have problems getting an appointment rather it's sick or wellness, the staff is extremely kind and receptive and the wait is always so short. I went in today for my physical and waited for 5 minutes before getting called back. 3 weeks ago I went in due to sickness and the story is the same. Love them. read more

I found Suwanee Family Physicians through the web. My first visit went extremely well. Dr. Shih was very easy to talk with. His staff was professional, friendly and pleasant to talk with. My second visit consisted of blood work, EKG and bladder testing. Again, the staff was wonderful. It has been difficult in the past to draw blood, however, Trasa was the Best Ever! No pain, I didn't even feel the needle. My third visit was a follow with results from my blood work. Dr. Shih explained my thyroid results so I could understand. We have decided on a plan to work toward getting my thyroid on track. I want to give a shout out to Nurse Trasa, she is great! She made me feel comfortable and relaxed. She is very professional without being stuffy. I look forward to seeing her moving forward. Thank you to Dr. Shih and Trasa for helping me with my medical issues. read more

Don't waste your time with this doctor and his office. They advertise a physician supervised weight loss program with a Certified Dietician and registered nurses. Its supposed to start off with a full physical, followed by weekly nutrition counseling and physical monitoring of blood pressure, weight and general health. Well the physical turned out to be a quickie to protect the doctor from lawsuits, and the certified dietician never appeared. The nurse is very nice (we really thought she was great), but we expected the whole program, including the advertised dietician. They also don't respect your time with regard to appointments. You can make one, but they'll keep you sitting in the lobby until they're ready. So if you run a business or expect puncuality, this place isn't for you. When we asked when we get to see the dietician, they said they couldn't meet our expectations, offered a full refund and wanted us to leave. The refund of course didn't include the (legal protection) physical. This is a foreign doctor who bought brochures for a program but tries to do everything on the cheap. There was no bedside manor, no visibility, and overall the program is nothing more than a method to generate patients to fill in the schedule. Save your money, patience and health. Go elsewhere - for everything. read more

Very courteous staff, clean office convenient location and parking, moderate cost; what's not to like, you ask? How about Dr. Shih's cavalier attitude toward maintaining this professional pilot's livelihood. My 1st (last?) visit to Dr. Shih for an FAA 1st Class physical: Dutifully reported Rx's I hold for a common chronic condition as I have done on at least 20 previous exams (all meds previously approved and okayed by the FAA). Rather than asking me about any of these , Dr. Shih sent me on an elaborate wild goose chase, "graciously" allowing 10 days to finish it or lose my license and my career! After jumping through all the hoops, proving to one and all that this was a groundless concern, and making a now required 2nd trip to his office, he couldn't even be troubled to speak with me. Don't risk your livelihood with non-pilot Medical Examiners - they just don't get it. I wish HIS professional license and livelihood were placed on the line 2-4 times annually, just as mine are. Office staff will not return phone calls. No explanation as to why lab work done didn't correlate with lab work discussed. It has been two weeks with multiple phone calls to office to get a answer. I called four days ago and insisted that the doctor call. No response. This doctor is into billing, not healing. Major disappointment with this practice. read more

Beware Dr. Shih! This practice is all about ramping up fees with unnecessary office visits to justify renewing prescription medications. I have been stable taking the same meds/dosage for 2.5 years, but as a new patient to his practice he required a complete physical (which I was due for in any case), then when I went to pick up my Rxs 4 months later I was informed by the pharmacy I must return to his office for a visit. The need for this was never discussed on my visits to the practice. When contacting his office I was told he wanted blood work. I offered to provide the needed test results from another doctors office and he refused to renew my Rxs. As a health care professional myself, I feel Dr. Shih is unethical and inappropriate. I would not recommend this practice to anyone. Further, Dr. Shih would not pick the phone up to discuss these issues with me. read more

I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM GETTING AN FAA MEDICAL CERTIFICATE ISSUED UNTIL I MET DR. JOHN SHIH. Doctor Shih should be stripped of his authorization as an AME. I visited him for my aviation medical only after the doctor I've been using for 10 years retired. I have a medical issue which requires a special issuance. My previous AME was able to issue me a medical without any difficulty. However, Dr. Shih and his incompetent staff completely bungled my application. He could not issue me a certificate in the office because his assistant incorrectly entered my information into the FAA medical database. Thus, the medical certification division insisted on reviewing my paperwork and issuing the certificate from there. I subsequently received a letter from the FAA deferring issuance of my certificate until my endocrinologist submitted a required report. MY ENDO SENT THE REQUIRED REPORT TO DR. SHIH SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE MY EXAM. However, Dr. Shih failed to transmit that report to the FAA! Other problems... I could not read the eye chart at 20/20. Of course not! The chart hangs in a corner of the office without any direct lighting. Upon my demand the assistant (lady with an eastern european accent) brought over an examination lamp and pointed it at the chart. Well, guess what. I read the chart at 20/20!!!! They had to run my EKG twice because the same assistant had trouble hooking up the leads properly. I should have walked out of Shih's office with my certificate in hand on March 8. Thanks to the incompetence of his staff and poor supervision by Dr. Shih, I've not flown as a CFI since then. I am determined to get Shih's AME authorization suspended. I will file a grievance with the FAA southern regional office next week. (3/30/15). read more

I don't understand the other reviews here. I made an appointment and when I arrived we found my insurance was invalid. They assisted in helping me find out what was going on. We found that my insurance didn't cover this doctors office and they went above and beyond even to the point of printing out other offices that would be covered under my policy. The staff was very kind and helpful and when I get all this mess straightened out, I will return and become a regular patient here as well as my family. Thank you guys for all your help!!! read more

Guess I should've checked reviews on here before deciding to go here. The draw was the "immediate care visit" at regular visit price. One star is gracious I was placed with a nurse who didn't speak or understand English very well. Then I had the privilege of seeing the physicians assistant, which I hate. I shouldn't have to pay for a visit if your assistant is going to see me. X-rays were taking and I was told by the assistant "I'm not the best at reading these things, there could be a fracture". I know Doctor shih was there, I saw him. You'd think he could've gotten off his cell phone for a moment and taken a look at a patients X-ray to see if he saw a fracture. In my internet research of toe fractures/breaks, most orthopedic surgeons recommend walking cast/brace to immobilize the break. I was told to wrap some take around it and take some ibuprofen. I can barely walk on it. After seeing the way I was limping on it, even the pharmacist chuckled that they prescribed ibuprofen. I called to request a different medication the following day, as the ibuprofen wasn't helping whatsoever. I'm told they will call something else in, 3 hours later still not called in. Called doctors office, from pharmacy, to see what deal is and I'm rudely told by the nurse "I'm calling it in right now" and was then hung up on. Sitting at the pharmacy for another hour I'm finally told it was just called in. I will not return to this practice. Rudeness is intolerable when it comes to me or my family's health and well bring. I will never use these people again. Update: I'll just continue to trash this place in an effort to save anyone the trouble of wasting time/money/effort with these people. I was told I would receive a phone call with X-ray results on a specific morning. No call all day. I call and they claim the results will be in next morning by 10 and I'll be called. After waiting til 1 I call. Receptionist tells me that all the nurses are gone to lunch but my X-rays are there. She doesn't know I am parking as we hang up. I walk in an what do you know, there is the poor English speaking nurse who has been so unhelpful this entire time. She retrieves the X-rays that were delivered this morning. Surprise! mine didn't even get sent out till today. I expressed my feel my feelings about their quality of treatment, in front of their waiting patients and left. I received an " apology " call 10 minutes later. If you want to call it that. I was told no one lied to me. I laughed, because I've lost count of the lies now. read more

I love Suwanee Family Physicians! Unlike many other doctor's offices I have gone into, the staff is welcoming, and genuinely happy that you are there. Ibe at the front desk goes out of her way to make your experience better, and it's obvious that she cares about developing relationships with customers instead of just treating them like another task. Both Dr. Shih and Mrs. Nina take the time to listen to what you have to say and make you feel comfortable. They are an absolutely wonderful team, and they make it easy to put your trust in them. dr. shih is the most ineffective doctor ever. when i went to him he claimed to have a proficient weight loss program but yet he continued to ignore my concerns and requests when i informed that i did not need or want apetite supressants, i confirmed that my issue was due to a hormonal imbalance. yet he continued to prescribe me apetite suppressants and basically disregarded my requests and concerns. also, when i went to him to get a cosmetic surgery approval and after i informed him what my down payment was for this surgery at another physician's office, he told me that he was in the wrong profession. this is when i lost most respect for him. a doctor who cares about h is patients and doing the work that he does will not say this type of thing, especially in front of a patient. this was most in appropriate and did not sit well with me and he was not joking. also, he failed to addresss all of the medical concerns that i took to him. they charged me copays and additional charges but yet he did not solve one single issue that went to him about. he and his staff kept rescheduling apointments for me and taking money from me after series of appointments, i saw that none of my medical were being resolved. he even prescribed something one time in which it was ill advised because i had a certain condition. the nurse practioner is equally as incompetent. she doesn't know or do anything until after she consults with him and if s he has to consult about everything, she should not be working there. she is no better than someone off the street without any kind of medical and health knowledge. these people take your money and do not solve your medical issues. i just called today to get information about a past medication he prescribed and he refused to give me that information simply because he did not like what i told the truth on a different occassion about the care i received from him and that nurse practioner! read more

In the last year, I have had multiple medical issues that have led to me to Dr. Shih who is my primary care physician. I still have all of the same medical issues and have had no improvement on any of them. I tried to stick it out despite the fact that I wasn't feeling like I was actually getting any help. Each time I saw him he would say he didn't know what was wrong with me and maybe I should see a specialist. I was willing to overlook the fact that EVERY time I go here, I wait at least 45 minutes. On my last visit (with a severe headache) I waited an hour and 15 minutes before I left to find another doctor. Unless you are looking for a simple physical, I would look elsewhere. read more

Terrible terrible unprofessional clinic. I scheduled an appointment for my husband and son for a check up because we are new the state and we were seeking to establish care. I'm so thankful we found out about them before making them our physician. The first appointment was at 9:15am. My husband got there at 8:30 to fill out paperwork. It is now 10:15 am and my husband finally just left after not being seen or ever. They are rude and clearly lack people skills. They also wanted to charge a fee for them having to write a prescription. I have never had the misfortune of experiencing anything like this before. I made a error by failing to read the reviews for this place. Unless you have an entire day to wait to be seen, like interacting with rude staff and being completely ignored please avoid this place at all cost. It's time we start using our buying power to put places like this that take our money and don't deliver, out of business. These people have no regard for people's time, or health and they do not deserve people's business. Poor excuse for a physicians office. I will feel everyone I meet about this awful place and hope word of mouth does the job. read more

The staff at Dr. Shih's office was good, especially the nurse. I went to his office for a FAA Medical and while some AME's have an easy breezy medical, others do a very detailed and through exam. Dr. Shih is one of those very detailed AME's. I did several things during this medical that I've NEVER done before. Fortunately, I passed with no limitations, however, it shouldn't be a headache. There are many AME's out there that want the pilot to pass, does everything he/she can to make sure the pilot keeps his/her medical but also makes sure the pilot is 100% healthy. Dr. Shih saw I had allergies and went on to lecture me on medications I can and cannot take. I even told him I'm currently NOT on medications and that I know the rules and where to find them. It's clear this guy is not on a pilot's side. Through conversation it's obvious he is all about money. This doctor not only does FAA Medicals, he also does workers' comp, weight loss programs, botox, DOT physicals, urgent care, family medicine.... Dr. Shih has plaques all over the office, even in exam rooms, to explain what he does. By all means, if you need an FAA Medical, go else where. Go to a doctor that is on your side, the pilot side and that you can talk to him as patient to doctor, not patient to FAA. Also, if you're a patient and need care, go to a physician that does not try to get his hand into everything he can. He mentioned several times about making money. So, this doctor is in practice for big money, not for the absolute good care of patients. FAA First Class Medicals are $150 without EKG, shop around, others are cheaper. This was my first time visit to Dr. Shih and will be my last. Once again, finding a new AME in 2017. Lastly, when I questioned why in the limitations box it was empty when I"ve always had "None" typed int he box, Dr. Shih wouldn't even come out and talk to me. I had to go through his nurse and front office. I find this very unprofessional from an AME. I'm paying him to give me and exam and then my medical so I can continue working, so I should be able to speak with him regarding the issue I had. The front office began to get short with me but the nurse continued to be polite. Long story short for future reference, the limitations box CAN be empty if you do NOT have any limitations. I called the FAA and so did the nurse. However, of all my medicals, it's always said "None" and for some reason their system won't print it. Some operators require something to be in that box, even if it is "None." Again, I can't say it enough, avoid this doctor whether it's for routine patient care, you're sick or you need a FAA Medical or some physical. You'll be happier if you go some where else. However, if you do go, use caution, he is all about the money and he even told me in the exam room he's got to make money. And I do feel bad for his entire staff, having to work for a guy that is all about money not not all about the patient. I know you have to make money, but if you put your heart in the patient, the money will come. Trust me, I have doctors in my family. read more

Dr. Shih is ALL about making money, and has no problem telling you that, which I believe is very unprofessional! He can't remember things he's told you in the past. He offered to treat me for a thyroid issue many times in the past, when I finally decided it may be more convenient to have him do that as well (because he's closer than my endocrinologist) he then tells me he didn't feel comfortable doing that?! Also, every time I go he makes me feel as if I'm making stuff up! He's very cocky and a smart $&@! They will put you in a room and make you wait forever! The office staff and nurses are all very nice and respectful. What's funny to me is, while I'm there he acts as if I'm making stuff up, but then wants to see me 2 weeks later? $$$$.. I've said over and over I am going to find another dr., but I end up going to him b/c he has all my info, but honestly that really hasn't mattered b/c he doesn't remember anything about any prior visits each and every time I've been! He is a joke! I've read other reviews to see if it was just me and NO, it's not just me.. Others apparently feel the same as I do! I am going to find another doctor, one other thing while reading other reviews I noticed others had tests done then billed ridiculous amounts of $$ later, which wasn't explained beforehand,I too had this problem. He did an Ekg in the office and when I was done I went to the front office to find out I owed an extra 50.00 on top of my co payment with the explanation that my insurance didn't cover that .. I feel I should've been told before hand and given a choice whether or not I wanted the test considering it wasn't covered by my insurance! Also, beware that if you have any blood work done, he won't tell you results over the phone he will make you come back in so he can bill your insurance again even if the labs come back normal! I wOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS DR. SHIH to anyone! I'm actually embarrassed that I've wasted so much time and $$$ to this place.. read more
