By far, the best experience at a dentist ever. They were responsive, courteous, caring, empathetic and efficient. I went in because a part of my filling fell out. They removed the rest of my broken filling, cleaned, prepped and 3D printed a crown for me on the spot - no follow up appointment needed (~15 minutes for the 3D print). To top it off, they provided a VR headset streaming a Netflix movie of my choice, as well as headphones to take my mind off of the procedure. Finally, a super comfy (and comforting blanket) to help me feel safe and at ease. I can't believe I am admitting this after what I've experienced in my past, but I can't wait to go back. I had a check in with Dr. Wu and mostly due to the front desk staff had an awful experience. Dr. Wu seems very knowledgeable and proficient and offers some high end procedures such as CEREC. While this is great, his staff was awful and overall I did not end up working with them as it seemed very "scammy". It was not clear how long my initial appointment would be, and ended up taking over 2 hours with a ton of imaging and no cleaning! (I have to come back for that. Which they did not tell me prior to booking the appointment). When I asked if it was covered by insurance there were long pauses and a lot "we'll let you know". Finally, it took them forever to give me a bill for my work. They gave me a bill for CEREC and a bill for resin restorations as options. Neither of which included what the cost would be after insurance (EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE IN NETWORK). Instead SHE TRIED TO SELL ME A CREDIT CARD. Is this used car sales? When I asked the front desk attendant for a bill after insurance she said in a very rude way it would take her "an hour and a half of her time" and didn't know when she would get back to me. I asked if it could be within the week, it has been over a week and a half and I've not heard back from them. This place operates with no professionalism or transparency. Dr. Wu has great credentials and is very kind. But the experience felt like a slick salesman and his front desk feels like financing a 2008 BMW at 30% APR. read more

I do not typically write reviews on anything, but I felt compelled to write a review for anyone in my situation. I'm new to San Diego and therefore did not have a dentist in the area when a debilitating toothache came over me. I checked our Dr. Wu's office more so out of desperation, if I'm being honest, and I am thoroughly impressed. The overall zen feel in the office brought my anxiety down. Even though I've never had a root canal, Dr. Wu's careful and methodical explanation and overall attention was extremely evident. His entire staff cares, and that's huge to me. Wow. i read the below review and couldn't believe it. The experience below is so unlike what I experienced that I felt I had to write about my own experiences. Unfortunately for me, I've had discolored teeth my entire life from taking antibiotics as a child. About a month before my wedding, my then fiancee and I were talking about our different anxieties and it came out how insecure I was about my smile. My husband, as a wedding gift to me, wanted to give me a new smile. We asked around and my husband, who went to school in San Diego, heard rave reviews about Sutra. We knew this was going to be difficult. We were in Los Angeles, Sutra was in San Diego and the wedding was a month away. At our initial consultation, the staff was great and Dr. Wu was very friendly and personable. They listened to what I wanted and instantly put us at ease. The office itself is very relaxing and comfortable and had a very serene vibe. I've always hated going to dentists and how they always try to upsell you but this was not the case at Sutra at all. Dr. Wu and his staff collaborated with us on how we could accomplish what we needed before the wedding (3 office visits within the month). Given how far away we were, the staff offered to open the office earlier on the weekends so that they could accommodate our schedule. This, to me, is going above and beyond the call of duty. I thought I had found my dentist for life, until a two year old root canal/crown done here abscessed because it not being filled all the way. When I contacted Sutra Dental Spa about it I was completely ignored. The work starts out looking great, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to last. And for an $1800 crown, I would have expected al lot more than two years out of it. I was a patient of this dentist for two years! Beware of this place if you are looking at becoming a first time patient. I had called them 1 month prior to make an appointment for my wife and I, and to also verify that they take our dental insurance. They said that they do and they will call my insurance provider to verify it. I provided them all my insurance information and my phone number. They scheduled our appointment and told me they will call me back if there was a problem. They never called back, so I assumed all was good. We come in for our appointment, fill out all their medical forms, then all of a sudden they tell us that they do not accept our insurance and that it will be $200 per person for the visit. We refused their service and left. We had waited one month for our dental appointment and they never even bothered verifying our insurance, which they admitted. My wife and I took time off from work for this appointment, and it turned out to be a huge waste of time. I then found out that they even had lost my phone number. They had called my mom, who is also a patient there, to verify some of our personal information a day before our appointment. Granted, she is mom, but it is unheard of to call a patient to verify another patient's personal information. I really wanted to like this place, but they really let us down and wasted our time. The dentist is a scary place until you walk into this place. The ambiance is second to none and the staff is wonderful. I had a couple of extractions done and I literally felt nothing, not even in the days after. I have a hard time believing any of the negative post, I think if you use a service you pay for a service. Ok, first off. My hubby went to Dr.Wu on the advise from 1800dentist, to have a tooth removed. He normally is very uncomfortable going to dentists. When he returned home, he could not stop talking about his experience. He was so happy and no pain.... That was about three years ago, I've been having a couple troublesome teeth on the upper jaw which can be very dangerous. He recommended this office! So following up from my previous review, yesterday I had more work done; a crown and replacements for the crappy fillings I've had since I was a kid (the old metal ones that look like ugly black spots on my teeth). This place continues to exceed my expectations. I got to watch a movie on a headset during the procedure, with a heated pillow under my neck! I almost turned down the offer of a hand massage, but I thought "What the heck, why not." I'm so glad I did. The lady who did it was excellent, and she even seemed to adjust the level of the massage during the more "intense" parts of the treatment to help distract me. As someone who does not feel comfortable at the dentist at all, this treatment was next level. They've fully earned the name "Dental Spa" in my opinion. I honestly barely even paid attention to the procedure. Having suffered through many painful novacane injections as a kid, I was pretty nervous when that time came, but not only did I literally not feel a thing, I swear Dr. Wu spent a full two minutes on the injection, doing it as slowly as possible to minimize the discomfort. My new crown feels exactly like my regular tooth, and when the anesthetic wore off there were no lingering aches. It didn't even feel like I'd been to the dentist, despite having spent two hours or so in the chair. Best of all, when I open my mouth now all those ugly black fillings are gone. Now that I've found this place, I can't imagine going anywhere else. I was seen at the sutra dental office in La Mesa. It was comfortable and the wait was reasonable. The price was printed out for me. I have excellent dental insurance. The estimate shows what my insurance pays and what I co-pay. However, they charged me both what my insurance paid and my part of the payment and they said it wasn't a mistake. They did say that if I wanted to pay less I could go to their other office in Coronado. Guess I was paying extra for the aesthetics. I found a great dentist office at smiles of La Mesa! They charged me 1/4 of what sutra dental charged. They said I need more work than I really needed. Been there and done that with other dentists. If you want good work, and to pay for only work you really need then I suggest you try smiles of LaMesa. It's not a beautiful office and it's newly owned by 2great dentists. The Quick and Dirty (Reason for 1-Star Rating): Hubby and I were told they were in-network for our insurance (we found them on our dental insurance website and called them to confirm). After our 2.5 hour appointment, we were told they weren't in-network. Two months later we received the bill. A really big bill. Plus, they x-rayed both of us when we asked them explicitly not to (especially because I was preggers)! Pros: 1. Very zen and classy reception area, complete with waterfall 2. Friendly Dentist and staff 3. Lots of parking and easy to find Cons: 1. Received three confirmation you-must-call-us-back-or-we'll-charge- you-$100-an-hour-for-your-appointment calls 2. Received the-doctor-will-be-out-on-Monday-can-we-reschedule call the Friday before and then received another two confirmation calls on Monday and Tuesday 3. Told over the phone and at the office that our insurance would cover both of our oral exams, cleanings, and x-rays (we told them "no x-rays, thank you) 4. Waited 30 minutes for them to check our insurance and twiddle our thumbs 5. Had an oral exam and cleaning: was told I had gum disease and needed five crowns (wow! oddly, no dentist had ever told me this yet...hmmm fishy) 6. Had x-rays even though I requested to not have x-rays while pregnant 7. All whilst my husband sat in his dental chair waiting and waiting and waiting (...and then he got x-rayed too many times because their fancy equipment wasn't working...even though he asked them not to)...and he still never got his teeth cleaned 8. Told we needed to pay the deductible at the end of the appointment ("Wait, I thought you were in-network?")...so we did 9. Explained the cost of two cavities (one for me and one for him) and five crowns would cost (well over $2500) 10. Received bill in the mail two months later (even though I called numerous times previously to resolve the matter)...a bill I will be contesting (they even forgot to subtract the deductible, haha) This is the laughable part: not only did they lie and say they were in-network, but they actually thought no matter what we'd want to still use their services and come back again. That's so funny. Why would I go back to you when I can find thousands of dentists through my website that actually ARE in-network? In response to Dr. Wu's response: I do not and did not have Periodontal Gingivitis. I never had it during my pregnancy and my healthy mouth is still very healthy. Since then, I have moved away from SD and switched dentists to one that I respect and trust. She has replaced my 12-year-old fillings with new work and my mouth looks and feels great! read more

If I could give this place TEN stars I would do it. Phenomenal place!! Beautiful music, gentle,kind people like my friend, Bernadette. She is a massage therapist whose gentle touch is so very welcome at the end of a long day. And my hygienist is darling. The front desk staff are always so welcoming! The place is beautiful and peaceful and I get every amenity you can think of, from aromatherapy to massage to virtual reality if I want it! Dr Wu is so kind and considerate. The waterfalls are soothing. I just cannot rave enough. Btw, I had terrible experiences at the dentist as a child, so I really am a huge baby about my mouth. Absolutely the worst dental experience of my life. I went in for preventative care. Was suggested that I needed not one but two caps for teeth that were fine but had older type fillings. I got the two caps and was in pain from that day on. Went back in 2 weeks later still in pain. I was told to wait 3 months. 6 months later, unable to eat on the right side of my mouth. Dr Wu said it was my fault even though my family has no history of root issues I was told that I needed not ONE but TWO root canals on the two teeth he worked on. Disappointing to say the least. My friend who I had referred before my issues occurred also had work done and also was told that she needed root canals on the teeth he had previously worked on. Nice looking place but the dental work was not worth the pain or the risk. Suggest looking else where. read more

Five stars hands down from the moment i walked into the place. Dim lights relaxing decor not a typical dentist at all.I needed a same day veneer and found this place online,they saw me same day from 10:45am- 1:30pm.In and out no temporary teeth. Left with my beautiful permanent veneer. This is my first yelp im not a yelper but this place deserves attention , the entire time i was there i was pampered I couldn't believe i was in a dentist office i was literally being massaged with oils on my hands/forearms with heated pillows under my neck while Dr.Wu worked his magic. I was also watching movies with a headset on so I couldn't even get the anxiousness of the dental process i was totally relaxed. Even the payment process was smooth no outrageous costs and April makes the insurance mystery crystal clear so it was all smooth sailing. "upon the concluded review of your complaint, in the Board's opinion, it was determined that the allegations if proven true would only constitute simple negligence which is not a violation of the Dental Practice." One word: fraud. I went here as a new college student because I had a major cavity that needed a crown. I ended up getting a root canal, then was sent to an oral surgeon where my tooth and the wisdom tooth next to it was removed. They also told me that I had SIX other cavities that needed fillings. Upon going back to my old dentist to get some of the fillings, I was told that I not only had ZERO cavaties, my tooth did not need to be removed and now I will need an implant. I went to get that implant last weekend, but I can't because the oral surgeon removed my bone plate and didn't give me a bone graft like he said he did. Here's the kicker: I was still charged $500 for the crown I never got and $600 for the bone graft I don't have. They won't return my money, exhausted my insurance and screwed up my teeth, as I am missing a tooth now and can't get an implant. Both dr.wu and his oral surgeon, dr. Vandameer, will be getting a lawsuit from me. They exploit new people to get as much money from them as possible, no matter how much they have to lie through their teeth (no pun intended) read more

I've been a patient at this office for a couple years until I sadly had to move away. It is a beautiful Chinese décor office that is sooo relaxing! It has a very spa-like feel. I have actually almost fallen asleep on the chair many times. The staff is super friendy. They have the best hygienists, Daoud and Kristen! I haven't found any better hygienists since. The doctor, Jimmy Wu, has changed my life! I used to be super insecure about my teeth especially since I had a traumatic accident when I was younger and one of my front teeth fell out! He did amazing work on me and nothing hurt! Before coming here, I hadn't been to the dentist in years. I've always had a fear since I was little and going to the dentist was always something painful and bad. When I found this place, I would actually look forward to having my teeth treated. I took the best care of my teeth during those years. They stressed taking care of my teeth so much and especially to floss which I had never really done before. I've learned a lot about dental care since then because they actually take the time to explain the importance of taking care of your mouth! I now know what to expect from a dental office in the future. I also want to point out that I did not have dental insurance and still chose to go here! It saddens me to see all the negative reviews because they are a great office with good service and wonderful staff. The prices are also pretty reasonable and would probably not be so high for patients if they had taken better care of their teeth. I believe you get what you pay for and that is what you will get at Sutra. I give them an A++! Like everyone else, I used to dread going to the dentist. After a number of years of avoiding the dentist my wife and I started seeing Dr. Wu. He never gave us a hard time for being so lax with our lack of dental attention. He and his staff have done an incredible job fixing our problems. Sutra has a lot of diversions to help make the visit a little more pleasurable. They supply headphones and VR goggles to watch movies or listen to music. There is also a message therapist on staff who massages your hands during the procedure. I can't say enough good things about Sutra. read more

Let me start by saying my review is not based on some first impression from a check-up. I had a number of issues built up over the years, and needed almost $10k in dental work. Needless to say, I checked prices around town FIRST.. Dr. Wu's prices are competitive, and their friendly receptionists, the presence of a milling machine, as well as their accommodating scheduling were the initial deciding factors for me. I've traveled a good deal, and due to some bad dental work as a teen, have seen dentists in a healthy portion of the US states. That being said, Sutra Dental Spa is bar none the most pleasant, friendly, skilled, thorough dentist I have encountered thus far. (And I think I'll return to San Diego for any future dental work from now on) With the milling machine in the office, you can be in and out in a bit over an hour (There is the inevitable 15 minute wait in the comfy lobby with the scented oxygen bar to factor in) with a full crown placed! No temporaries here, once you get out of that chair, that tooth is solid. (Dr Wu is good with the machine IMO, which from what I've read is an important factor.) There are more LCD monitors in this office than in Bill Gates' home (ok, maybe not; I haven't toured recently), and one is positioned on a swivel in front of your dental chair. Whenever showing X-rays, or the video of your teeth (Part of the full mouth examination), you get to see on screen what he's talking about. They have a really neat polarization effect for the X-rays which makes it really obvious where cavities are.. no more second guessing whether the dentist is fabricating work! Dr. Wu is by far the most effective dentist I have encountered with regard to numbing the work area. Not only can I never feel the work he's doing (I think I may be resistant to the medicine, because usually I'm in excruciating pain.. high pain threshold though, so I just bear it), but you can not feel him use the needle... at all. I've honestly never experienced that in my 20+ previous dental visits where major work was performed. While they work on you, they go to a good deal of effort to ensure you're comfortable. They use a rubber block you bite down on so you don't have to hold your mouth open (sounds basic, but no other dentist has offered this), have glasses so you can watch a movie (these hurt my nose, so I've never done it.. but it's a cool idea), and offer scented, heated neck pillows. For any real work, they also have a complimentary masseuse who will work your hands and/or feet while you get your dental work done. I've fallen asleep more than once in the chair. The staff at Sutra Dental Spa is incredible in my experience. A collection of genuine and friendly people, even Dr. Wu comes across as friendly, rather than the impartial Dr attitude which 75% of Drs seem to exhibit. While in the waiting room, they even bring you coffee tea or btld water! I went in for a broken crown, and upon a full mouth examination, learned I had 4 other crowns which needed work, as well as replacing some amalgam inlays (something on my to-do list, but I haven't had time), and they scheduled all this work for two appointments! One for the left side of my mouth, second for the right, then a follow up/cleaning after those. Wow.. finding time for the dentist has always been my biggest problem with them.. when they asked which two days would work for me, I was really impressed. Finally, the main reason I first went to Sutra Dental Spa, their prices are directly competitive with other dental offices. $1000 for a crown without insurance (maybe it was $1100)... that's the same cost as anywhere else I called, whether the crown be done the same day, or a typical temporary be placed, then you return. I was actually discussing this with the staff, and they told me their accountant sets the prices based on the average for the area. Above and beyond service for the same price as any other dentist.. and they do it right! (If you haven't had any serious work done, this is a HUGE factor.. I've had much of my work re-done because the initial dentist did not perform his work with enough skill or care to make the work last. Each time you have to revisit for work, your tooth decays further, and of course, you pay more) My review is off the hook glowing.. because that's how I feel about this office. Check my other reviews, and you'll see I tend to be pretty even handed. (I actually had a sales guy at Mazda beg me to change my review because even though it was overall positive, he got reamed by his manager over it) I usually only review when I find a service I'm impressed with, or which really disappoints me (and most are on yelp) The one star reviews on here really surprise me.. my mom just went in for additional dental work.. so all in all, 6 crowns, and a ton of other work later.. 100% very clean, cosmetically appealing crowns out of this office, and friendly accommodating staff every single ti read more

before i get started i just have to say wow!!!!!!... i cant beleive anyone would stoop as low as to call a receptionist at a dentistry a b$&@!... well sorry to say people lack self control and truly have demonstrated extremely low level of maturity. with that being said, i have read the previous reviews and it seems either this dentistry is loved or hated... i loved this dentist so much i referred my mother along with two other individuals. i have been going to sutra dental spa for over 3 yrs now and i can honestly say that they are the best dentistry in San Diego. when i was injured with a chipped tooth at work i called SDS and left a message on the emergency line and i received a call from dr wu in 5 minutes.directly he took care of me the very next day avoiding further infection and discomfort. the staff has always been overly understanding in working with difficult work schedules. also i would like to address the accusation of SDS being expensive, People, sorry to tell u that dental and medical is always going to be expensive, im a firm beleiver in "u pay for what u get, i have never had any problems with the dental work done or issues with staff. also there is a monthly payment plan for individuals, such as myself, with poor health coverage. its too bad that the majority of people who gave a bad review either had to spend money or was trying to get money... its heathcare and it costs , but its totally worth it... im proud of every hard earned dollar i invest in this dentist office... Big shout out to my dentist Jimmy Wu in La Mesa, San Diego. Yesterday's crown replacement included a massage therapist working on my hands and arms and shoulders throughout the procedure, a warm lavender scented neck pillow, dark glasses to shield the light. My crown was created and replaced all during that 45 minute massage; which ended with both my hands in individual cozy warmers. Dr Wu always has the latest technology - like his digital system for making perfect crowns while you wait. Yesterday he used a new device to hold my mouth open; it was totally comfortable and had an air attachment too; jaw totally relaxed. They have 3D videos but I prefer to listen to the relaxing music and soft gushing of the multiple wall fountains. I have been going to Dr Wu for many years. It took a long time after past years of dental trauma , but I honestly can say that thanks to Dr Wu and his efforts to provide excellent service, I can finally relax at the dentist. If it wasn't for Sutra I never would have gotten my teeth fixed. I didn't go for over ten years because of horrible dental experiences, but a friend recommended this place. They are really nice, and treat you with respect and kindness. The prices are comparable to other dentists. I will never go anywhere else. read more

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Wu for over a decade and have always been pleased with his work. His "new" office is gorgeous, inviting, and always very clean and relaxing. His staff is also very nice. There have been a few changes with billing / front reception personnel over the years. I am ok with this because I feel that the changes have been for the better. The dental care remains top-notch. His prices seem to be in line with other dentists. Even with insurance, out-of-pocket dental expenses are just high. Most insurance plans don't cover much when it comes to dental. Overall, we are extremely happy with Dr. Wu's services and his office and have recommended them to our friends over the years. read more
