I got CHEAP mulch and dirt but hard to find someone to help you. I didn't know what was available.

The Urban Lumber Company - There's the scrap pile behind the building! It's great!

But I wasn't buying one of their very fine table pieces - or their cross sections for whatever tickles you fancy. No, I was picking through their scrap pile in the back! It's about the size of a school bus, and it's basically non-precious cuts left over, or cuts too thin to be utilized in their impressive showroom otherwise. They charge around $9 per piece - I bought a 7 foot walnut slab to transform into a wall-mounted coat rack. Cost me $9.50. They'll also clean it up, plane it, and cut it down for a fee. I didn't do it, but it's nice to know they're so accommodating. They're definitely in a location that's a pain to park in front of if you're coming up the hill from the west - as there's a double line, and no turn around for over a mile. But once you make it - and though their place is wildly unrefined - you'll find a sort of boutique lumber mill of accommodating patronage. I'll definitely be back to visit. The wood's fair, the help is knowledgeable, and the stock is spectacular. You'd do well to visit too!

The scrap pile would be more accurately called the treasure trove. Really great pieces of green lumber at giveaway prices. $9 for anything you can lift into your own vehicle, if it takes a forklift, they'll shoot you a tiny number first. The died lumber indoor is pricier, but still a bargain. Super nice folks and a great selection. Very good website for this sort of operation too...

There are some very friendly good people there, but trying to find the tool or part needed frequently ends in going someplace else. We are in the middle of remodeling a home, so our visits are frequent and many times we aren't exactly sure what to get. And there are some great equally helpless staff to point us to the wrong solution. There are things the Lowe's has. Craftsman tools and some parts, for instance. And there are things they don't, like the proper wide replacement bracket for a Harbor Breeze ceiling fan that probably was purchased there. It's like a darker version of HD. Literally, it feels darker and less friendly, as odd as that sounds. The comparison applies to the staff as well, where the guy in the plumbing isle at Lowe's can lethargically point you in general to the location of some of the parts, the guy in the plumbing isle at HD can brightly describe exactly how to solve your problem backed by 40 years of master plumbing experience he recently retired from. Sure, we frequent Lowe's. It's conveniently located. And in general, a 2x4 is a 2x4, and a dry wall screw is a dry wall screw.

I recently had ankle fusion surgery so I am re-learning how to walk, meaning I have to use a walker and can't walk long distance yet. Upon arriving, there were no motorized carts available. We entered right by the customer service desk, so I stopped and asked about them in case they were located at a different entrance. Mind you, I have a giant orthopedic boot & walker, but the woman still looked at me like I was a lazy POS & said "we only have one so someone must have it," then rolled her eyes and turned away from us. I started the long-for-me walk to the lighting section and had to stop part way to rest. Fortunately, some other customer had seen fit to open up a package of folding chairs nearby, so I was able to sit down for a few minutes and rest. At this point a nice young lady who worked there came by and asked if I needed help, and I explained the motorized cart situation. She was aghast and said she would go find it. She recruited a young man to help, and they found it out in the parking lot. The young man drove the cart to me and things went fine from the there.

I then began researching Marc's Flooring online (the company Lowe's scheduled me with) and found they had a solid 1.2 star rating with multiple reviews about them doing a bad job, being unreliable, and even damaging customer homes and vehicles. Um, no thanks. I called Lowe's back and asked them to schedule me with a different company and was told they couldn't. Apparently, every Lowe's in our area has an exclusive contract with Marc's flooring or something, because they said they ONLY use Marc's. I cancelled my measurement appointment and went elsewhere for my flooring. I didn't want to knock the star rating down too far since this is regional, but corporate really needs to find a new flooring installer.

We found some carpet that we liked and noticed that they also had a very good pad to go under it. We talked with Wes in the flooring department and he was amazing even though it was only a few minutes before their closing time. We got all of the help that we needed and another person came out to our house to measure where the carpet went, so we can figure out how much we need and pay for the installation. I went back a next day to buy some more stuff to treat the floor and also some paint brushes, rollers, and all the equipment that I needed. I also got a lock box for the house. I like Lowe's because they are very helpful and the people that work there seem to actually want to help you as opposed to other places. We will go back here to find all of the things we need for our home.
