I had heard about Susie's Scrumptious Sweets from two friends who said their cakes were amazing. So when my daughter's 16th birthday rolled around we went there for a tasting. They have open tastings Saturdays but I recommend making an appointment because it can get busy. We were there with three other groups and it actually made it a lot of fun. Everyone was talking about the occasion they were there for and the ideas they had for their cakes. Susie's husband, Wilt, does the tastings and he's hilarious. He's also really great at answering any questions you may have about the different flavors. Be warned - Come hungry! They usually have around 10 different cakes for you to try and they don't serve tiny pieces. You are going to get a whole piece of each and every flavor you want to try. And you can try them all. Seriously, try them all. You'll be surprised at how delicious some of the combinations are. They box up all the leftovers so you can take them home with you and eat cake for a week. My favorites were the almond cake and coconut cake. My daughter's favorites were strawberry shortcake (with fresh strawberries) and key lime. After you've decided on your flavor you will talk to Susie and work on your design. They have a ton of pictures of past cakes if you need ideas. We ended up with a strawberry shortcake cake that fed around 20 people with an anchor on top. When we picked up the cake for the party I was shocked by how large it actually was. Our Philadelphia Eagles football jersey cake was impressive, delicious and a show stopper. Our Miami Dolphins baseball cap cake was also delicious and awesome. Such incredible detail work. Our guests couldn't believe they were cake. Susie's surprised us with a bonus football cake on the day of the party. Although I appreciate a pretty cake for its aesthetics, for me it's all about the taste. Susie's never disappoints. They make INCREDIBLE TASTING CAKE. For this party, we had a key lime cake with white chocolate and raspberry filling, a pina colada cake with pineapple filling, and a chocolate cake. Hands down one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever been a part of. I ordered my mother's 60th birthday cake from this bakery. I gave Susie a draft of the design,images, and color schemes for her to be able to execute exactly what I wanted for the special day. When I went to pick up the cake a few hours before the event I was shocked. The cake was not at all what I described and requested. At $275, I was expecting something more eloquent. What I got was an elementary design that did not fulfill my request. We expressed our unhappiness with Susie and she was not willing to make the situation better. She kept reiterating that there was nothing she could do for us at that point. We explained to her that this was not the design we requested and she proceeded to tell us that she was up until 11:30pm the night before making the cake and couldn't inquire about details. The order was placed a full two weeks prior so any questions about the design should have been addressed before. She walked away from us multiple times mid conversation and did not offer any solutions to our problem. Her tone made us and the other customers in the shop feel very uncomfortable. After about thirty minutes of expressing our sentiments and attempting to come to a solution she handed us a fifty dollar bill reluctantly. The event was a few hours after delivery and the cake was falling apart by then. We followed all instructions regarding the care and the fondant details were all coming off simultaneously. I was truly embarrassed to show this cake at the event knowing how special this day was for my mother. I have never experienced something this appalling. As a business owner you should pride yourself on making your customers happy. If you clearly delivered a subpar product, you should acknowledge and make an effort to mend the situation. The most unfortunate part is that the cake taste itself was awesome and had it not been for this horrendous experience I would have been a repeat customer but because the way Susie handled us and the situation we will never return nor will we ever recommend this bakery to anyone. read more

I got a gender revealing cake and cupcakes. I give them an envelope from my doctor with the gender in it. The cake was either pink or blue Velvet Cake. She then charged my credit card for nearly $2k and didn't know what to do. She wanted me to leave my credit card which is completely insane. Then when a family member picked the cake up, I got a red cake without the ONE item I requested. When trying to communicate the error, Susie was completely unwilling to fix it and didn't agree that this was on her. She wanted to make the blame a mutual thing which was extremely unprofessional. I tried one of their cakes during Art Basel and it was very good. The cake I tried at the gallery wasn't fancy, just a good homemade cake. I took one of their cards and headed to the shop this weekend with my family. I checked their website before going and it said they have cake samplings on Saturday and it seemed very welcoming to all. When we got there the owners asked if we had an appointment and I said no, as there had been no mention of needing an appointment on the website. They said it was ok and seated us. However while we waited and other people came in, the people that had appointments were treated much nicer and were given cake right away. It was a very monetary seeming affair, we got the feeling that if they didn't think you were planning a big event and were pre-ordering cakes from them, then there was no reason to treat you well. It was really off-putting, so we left. They are not a bakery, they make custom cakes by pre-order only and for the most part it is fancy wedding cakes, not really "cakes for any occasion". We had our wedding cake made by Susie, and it was a hit! The design and selection process is great, and they have free and open cake tastings every Saturday which are an absolute MUST to experience, at least once. They generally have 10-20 cake flavors available and you're welcome to sample as many as you can stomach...literally. But even so, they'll insist on sending you home with leftovers (we still have a monster slice of their key lime cake in our freezer...). They do beautiful work, and the fondant actually tastes GOOD. Unfortunately not a good experience. We went for a cake tasting and it was horrible. My fiancé and I are not picky people, but we were very disappointed. It looked like the cake was baked a few days before, frozen, and then thawed out...it was stale, extremely dry, and the batter was all crumbly, with messy layers of frosting in between. The slices were wrapped in wax paper and displayed on a cafeteria tray. The photo albums were 10+ years old and falling apart, and the whole thing was very unprofessional. The worst part was seeing a dead cockroach in the bathroom and then seeing 4 dogs going into the kitchen a few minutes after we left the appointment. Firstly, the top came off in transit (after I was told everythinf was very secured)- Secondly, when it was cut (at the proper angle suggested) it completely fell apart into crumbs! Everyone had crumbs on their plate- not a slice- my son had crumbs for his first piece of cake ever (not what I envisioned). Also, Susie the owner boasted of a smash cake that "came with the big cake" and it was literally a cupcake. So this was a really interesting experience - at first, I wasn't so sure - but as this place was recommended to us, I thought I would give it a shot and look past some of the things that were suspicious to me. The place was very disorganized, but I just assumed that was the case of a very busy, popular cake place. When we tasted the cakes, our opinions did change - we were impressed, but it didn't make up for the complete lack of customer service/business etiquette that I experienced later, in fact, I'm writing this review and started this account specifically to warn people of this place. We had made an agreement to a price with the intention of having two flavor cakes - one was our actual cake, the other was a sheet cake in the back. The both were to be cut and served at the same time and our guests were to have the option (the only reason why we even got the sheet cake was because we wanted to have the second flavor; in fact, we only actually served our actual cake that night and went home with an entire sheet to feed 100 people). Originally we thought it was a caterer problem why the second sheet wasn't served. When we received the sheet and it was the same exact flavor as our real cake, we realized it was the cake lady's problem, not our caterers (they never thought it was a different flavor and therefore didn't serve it - and they were right). When I called Susie's and spoke with Susie herself - she admitted immediately that the fault was in their hands, that she remembered making the mistake that day (and never mentioned a word to us on that day - or any day following) - and said she would make me a birthday cake to make up for it. I spent about $350 extra to have a sheet cake in the back to feed 100 people (that not only did I not need if it was going to be the same flavor, but also that not even one slice was eaten from that sheet - a complete waste of food). She shouted and insisted that she absolutely refused to give any sort of a refund. Now I know, had I just bought my own cake (with no sheet cake) - that the price would have been significantly cheaper. She shouted, refused, and I have never experienced so much disrespect from a business owner in my life. She received her money, so at this point she didn't care - and let's be honest - I'm already married - what are the chances I'm going to go back for a second wedding cake anytime soon? So last night we had a cake party to try and tackle this 100 serving cake and hardly made a dent. The whole thing had to be tossed into the garbage - and there went a ton of food and money. Not to mention the cake tasted horrible 5 days after in the freezer. But I'm glad I've spoken with my 4 recently engaged friends from Florida and warned them against this place. I hate to be a nag, and have never done this before - but when the economy is rough for you as a business owner, it is equally rough for brides trying to make the most of the budget they have - and here I gave her a ton of money - and was not listened to, ignored and shouted at like I was a 5 year old when she admittedly made a mistake. I've been going there for years for all my special occasion needs. It's a real family run business (mother and daughter team with the dad assisting on tasting days) and they are sooo nice. They will work with your budget from a small simple cake, cupcakes or delicious cookies or as extravagant as your heart desires and pocket can manage. They do a lot of detailed work. It's gotten to the point where I just go with a price point, colors and choose a flavor and they surprise me with whatever. I'm always pleasantly surprised. On Saturdays they offer a free cake tasting and you can consult with Susie herself on what it is that you are looking for exactly. They have tons of pictures of the work they have done and will be willing to tweak their previous designs or come up with a whole new one to fit your needs.
