Situated on the upper floor of the breathtakingly modern W Edinburgh, SushiSamba has an undeniable place in the world of fashion sushi. What is fashion sushi one might ask? While definitions can be argued, it is sushi implemented for design and trendy party vibe as opposed to the meal itself. In other words, imagine everything about the ingredient focused, meticulous Japanese cuisine and turn it upside down. It's conceptually a mix of styles of Japanese inspired food from Brazil and Peru, having opened its first location in NYC in late 90s. Indeed, confusing, but perhaps that's where unpleasant terms like "fusion" become applicable...
The appetizers like salmon sashimi are an excellent start to a meal, with western style rice outside rolls that are well constructed and incredibly satisfying. The restaurant also serves breakfast for hotel guests, with fresh preparations of Scottish classics, thus adding another layer of fusion on top of a concept that was already confusing.
The atmosphere is fun, elegant and Latin party oriented. It's a place that feels out of place in many ways within the Old Town of Edinburgh, but is that such a bad thing? read more
