Genki Sushi - Japanese Tuna Adobo

My 6 year old nephew loves Genki Sushi. You punch in your order on a keypad and after awhile WOOSH…read moreyour food comes racing in from the kitchen in a red or yellow racecar. He is completely mesmerized and in love with those cars. When he grows up, my nephew will (hopefully) realize that style is no substitute for substance. We stopped by Genki for dinner and got a bunch of stuff. The typical ones were salmon sashimi, salmon oyako don, unadon, and flying fish roe. The funkier ones were the tempura spam and tamago roll, and the Japanese tuna adobo. Whether typical or funky, all of them were meh. Not awful, but also either on the bland side or not of high enough quality. And at those prices, I definitely expected more. Too bad I don't find food-bearing racecars that wonder-full.

The panel shows clearly how your order would look like and the images also present the correct number of sushi you'd be getting per order. Each table is also fitted with a source of boiled water for dissolving the Japanese green tea also on each table (recommended serving of two spoons per cup). What I enjoy about the manner of ordering and serving compared to the belt delivery system is the sushi seems fresher. Food wise, taste is surprisingly good (expected more a gimmick and didn't expect it to be flavourful), but a tad tuned for the Filipino taste of being sweeter than usual. A great experience overall!

OK, it's been a while since I've had some decent sushi and I was craving for some "good ass" sushi,…read moreFound It! Now, comparably speaking, I would have to say one of the better sushi places I've been to. I stumbled upon this place on yelp as I happened to go to another Japanese restaurant that was closed partially because I didn't look for their hours before going and partially because their hours we not listed on yelp yet, boo. What I did stumble upon was a photo... of Foie Gras sushi, which 1) I heart Foie Gras and 2) was reminiscent of my time in Hawaii when I was able to enjoy foie gras sushi my first time ever. Soooooo Off We GO to the new Sensei Sushi! Quite possibly one of the better decisions we will make this weekend in regards to cuisine. Service was good, but I did notice a drop off as the place got more and more busy with customers. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The server kept recommending things, which was good and bad, as in my opinion if I wanted some recommendations, I would simply ask and I've been to more than my share of sushi joints and usually know what to order. Nonetheless, overall very helpful. As for the food. One word, Yummy comes to mind, delicious, tasty, fresh-er than most places. OK, that's 7. I usually don't order cooked food at a sushi place, so my review is a mix of their raw and cooked menu. Seared Chutoro Sushi: Well prepared, well cut, not the absolute best part of the tuna belly compared to Otoro, but certainly a delicious treat! Chutoro Sushi: same as above, delicious, very satisfying for those who love that fatty goodness tuna belly has to offer. Foie gras Sushi: great cut, larger than most places I've had this similar dish. Seared perfectly, in my opinion. NOT burnt like most places here in the PH that over sear their foie gras, including Antonio's. MUST TRY! Amaebi: Looked and tasted very fresh. Color was gorgeous and sweet as it should be. Not too much wasabi to spoil it, perfectly balanced in my opinion. Oh! and they deep fry the heads so they can be eaten! Proper! Japanese Uni Sashimi: Color was much better than almost every place I've been in the PH. Looked and tasted fresh-er than most, there was 1 small brownish piece at the bottom, but overlooked it because at most other places, all the pieces are brown. Snaps for the nice yellow Uni to Sensei Sushi! Color wasn't eye popping yellow as it would be when super fresh, yet I'll take it over so many others in Metro Manila. Fish Tacos: Actually quite scrumptious. I wasn't prepared to have good fish tacos, but I saw them on the menu and couldn't resist. They were delicious. Ikura Sushi: A bit disappointed, color was a bit dark and wasn't super fresh, however, that's simply an opinion. I DO KNOW, there are many different grades of ikura, I'm just used to the bright orange color with more of a traditional salted caviar taste, this one just tasted like there was something else I wasn't familiar with. Seared Salmon Belly Suhsi: Another treat I was not expecting. I wasn't expecting a salmon belly so fatty similarly to their chutoro. Overall, very good. Tuna Dynamite Roll: For a roll, quite good. A nice filler, taste was on point with what you would expect in a more than decent roll. I forget the name of the last dish: it was thin strips of beef with chopped foie gras and uni. Quite honestly my first attempt at this dish was head on, meat, foie gras, uni. So sorry not quite what I had expected. THEN however, I deconstructed it, Uni by itself, which the uni on this dish we're I think local, was a bit fishy. BUT then, the foie gras and steak alone, darn it if that wasn't reminiscent to a filet topped with seared foie gras from Central Park Bistro in San Francisco! All that was missing was a perfectly balanced '12 Opus One red to cap it off. Overall: with the exceptions above... I will be back for more! A la cuisine! Stay Hungry My Friends

Ooma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma!!!! Solid sushi making happening…read morein here tourists and residents of Manila! Japanese resto on the third or fourth floor of this mall and the place is similar to a small sushi place here in Toronto with only about 10-15 tables that extend inside the mall so you can 'people watch' while you munch on some fresh well-handled ingredients. The chicken teriyaki dinner was served on a bed of fresh leafy greens with bomb teriyaki sauce drizzled on top that can activate salivation in an instant. The sushi rolls were compact with flavour and filling that is heavily squished between master hands and a wooden roller perfecting a trip coming to an end in my beautiful city. I forget which ones we ordered but we came near closing and the options were limited to what's available for the chef to make so we settled for what it is, but it never felt like settling. Service was also warm despite us bombarding into the server's wishful thinking in getting the restaurant cleaned and empty in time for clocking out. Please refer to the pictures taken as all of the above have imprinted quality sushi in our minds whenever we are back for some shopping next visit. A bit on the pricier side compared to other cheaper options in and out the mall but it's equivalent to paying $60 and on par with the a la carte restos here in Toronto.

Ooma is a well known Japanese restaurant that offers fusion dishes that fits the Filipino palate. They have three locations in Manila but we decided to dine at their SM Megamall branch. We were told to expect long lines at all Ooma locations but we got lucky to be seated right away. The hostess greeted us right promptly and the entire staff were all friendly, fast, and efficient. We were very pleased with excellent customer service provided. The food? OOMAGOD! I loved every single dish we ordered. From sushi to soft shell crab to hangar steak to dessert. I didn't bother knowing the names because I just went on chomping and devouring every dish brought to our table. They tasted as good as they looked. It's just WOW! Amazing food yet very affordable. Highly recommended!

So, usually I'd wait and plan a trip to Makati so that I can eat at one of my favorite Japanese restaurants there. When Carlo found out about this Japanese restaurant nearby that serves reasonably priced yet great tasting Japanese food, we just had to go try it! The restaurant is found inside Pioneer Center. Just to manage expectations, expect no frills when dining here. Seats are limited; looks like an old cafeteria. In fact, the place badly needs a renovation even just a new paint job. Also, there is no restroom here; you have to go all the way to the supermarket's restroom. My all-time favorite here is the Uni Sashimi; it's only Php180! Super fresh too! The only downside is that it's the first to run out. You also must order any of their Sushi Sets (mostly under Php200), Ebi Tempura and Beef Misono. Wash it all down with their Red Iced Tea! :)

The Good: Great Japanese food, specially considering the price…read more The Bad: Rice isn't authentic Japanese Rice, and the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired The Pro-Tip: Try the Red Iced Tea and the Ebi Tempura On one of those nights when Joey and I were unsure on where to eat, we decided to do bit of Yelp roulette! Looking for an alternative to our usual Japanese restaurant, we found this gem on Yelp! It was highly recommended by the previous reviews so we decided to give it a try! And am I glad that we did! While the ambiance is that of a carinderia (canteen), the food does not disappoint! We ordered the Sushi Platter, Tuna Sashimi, Ebi Tempura and Beef Mizuno! The Sushi and Sashimi were very fresh. The Ebi Tempura was abit on the small side, but very well cooked. The beef mizuno was well cooked and seasoned! My only complaint regarding the taste was that instead of using authentic Japanese rice, they used a local variety. Otherwise, the food was superb! The kicker was that these dishes can easily go for P250-300 at other Japanese restaurants, but here it only averaged P150! What a steal! Finally, there was the Red Iced Tea. Trust me, the other Yelpers are right, it is worth a try! Will we be coming back for seconds? Definitely! Soon, too!
