This place is just OK. I wouldn't call this the best sushi place in London (Gozen takes that honour of having the best sushi in the area). The sushi had a bit too much rice for my liking. I tasted more rice than what was inside the California Roll - definitely not how sushi is supposed to be. The menu here is also quite limited (for example, no shrimp tempura appetizer? That's quite common to find at most Japanese restaurants). Parking is also hard to come by too. A big plus, however, is the overall quiet ambiance of the restaurant. The interior is quite small and cramped though. All in all, I probably won't be back - especially considering the location. Also important to note, if you have a reservation here, do not show up late. They are very strict about punctuality. I learned this the hard way when I got stuck in traffic once and asked them if they could hold my reservation for an extra 5 minutes, only to which they said no. read more

I've always wanted to try Sushi Ya, since I've started walking to work over a year ago, and walk by this place almost everyday, and tonight was my chance! From the outside, it looks like very small from the glimpse I get walking past it, and that's very true from the inside as well, as I discovered tonight, it was definitely an intimate setting, and not very busy on a Saturday night when I walked in around 6:15pm after work. There were only two people working, the chef and the waitress. She was on top of everything, I was seated the moment I walked in and handed a menu and a photo album of their specials, and combo's. I had ordered Combo 131, which included a salmon maki roll, Philadelphia roll, and a spicy tuna roll, which came with miso soup, and I had also ordered a seaweed salad, and green tea. The prices are not AYCE sushi, it's A La Carte style. So my order came to around $24 and some change after all was said and done, and although it doesn't seem like a lot of food, it was, I was very full afterwards. The service was quick, when I came in she handed me a complimentary small plate of edamame, which was cold, but it was still good, and took my order and promptly brought out my green tea and water. I was by myself tonight, so it was nice just to take in everything. The entire place is small and there was a couple other groups there as I enjoyed my meal. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and would love to come back and try the lunch special. read more

Lovely little Japanese restaurant for a la carte sushi. We had a dinner box that contained an assortment of sashimi, a spicy tuna/spicy salmon/California roll, salad, Miso soup, and deep fried gyozas. I especially enjoyed their salmon and butter fish sashimi, as well as their crispy gyozas. Their spicy tuna roll wasn't anything like your typical spicy tuna maki, and I didn't care too much for it. All in all, it was a satisfying, balanced meal, and probably as good as you can get for a la carte sushi in London. read more

Sushi Ya runs a phenomenal lunch special! They were pretty busy when I visited at around 1 PM on a Friday, so you might want to get there on the early side if you're on a short lunch break. They offer a variety of bento boxes ranging from $10 - $13, with inari (tofu pockets) on the low end, and sashimi on the high end. The boxes come with a sushi roll (you can choose from California, spicy tuna, or salmon), salad, a couple of dumplings, and your main dish. They're preceded by a fantastic bowl of miso soup. It's plenty of food to fill you up, and a great deal. The sashimi I tried was excellent: thick cuts of tender, fresh, flavorful fish. I'll be back for sure! The rest of the menu looks good as well, and is decently priced. But lunch seems to be the really super deal. Metered parking on the street outside. read more

Came here for date night and it was amaaaazing! Its a small little mom and pop place and they've got a plethora of Maki rolls. We tried four of them and loved them all. They also sell alcohol. I wouldn't recommend this place for noodles and other non-sushi items because I think they only have 2-3 of those kind of things. I mean maybe they're good. But they mostly have a lot of sushi and sashimi. We tried the miso soup and seaweed salad, the super dragon roll (came with thiiiick slices of eel), avocado salmon, pink tuna, and a crispy tuna roll (I think). And we had some sake. All great! And it all came for a good price! I was surprised, actually. Anyway, can't wait to come back! read more

First of all the service is always great here. I've been to Sushi Ya many times, and their service never disappoints me. I'm comfortable to sit and eat there. Second, their food is good. I've been moving around quite a bit across Canada. Compare to lots of sushi restaurants in other provinces, Sushi Ya's quality is pretty good. It's a small cozy place for friends to hang out and enjoy the food. My complaint for the place is that they do t have much varieties. Yes they serve sushi. I was looking for chicken katu curry the other day, which means Japanese style deep friend chicken with curry sauce, but I couldn't find it at Sushi Ya. I was a bit disappointed about it. However, I do understand they are a Sushi restaurant. If you are looking for some gourmet homemade quality sushi, then this is the place. It's a stable place to enjoy sushi with friends. read more

This place is small and easy to miss, but don't let that fool you - it's good! As soon as we sat down they brought us complimentary edamame, which was a nice surprise. And the sushi itself is very tasty. They also offer rolls made with brown rice, which is really hard to find at sushi restaurants in London. I'll definitely be going back! read more

I wasn't thrilled with this place. Yes, the atmosphere was cosy and intimate and the service was pretty good. What got me was the quality of the fish and the prices they're charging. For two of us, ordering a couple of rolls and some sashimi, it came to almost $80 and they charge for tea. I ordered tuna sashimi but the fish looked too translucent; the rolls are bigger than they should be because they use too much rice. In my opinion, there are better sushi restaurants in the downtown area. read more

A more accurate rating would be a 3.5. This place is pretty good. The rolls and boxes are not bad value when it comes to sushi restos. The complimentary edimome is a nice touch when you sit down. Though cold, still a nice touch. However following that the service is slow, almost non-existent it feels. The food is also just ok. While filling and enjoyable, it just lacks that truly fresh taste you need with sushi. I have come here a few times and since its close to work I may end up again. What can i say, I have been going to Sushi Ya for years , it is by far the best Sushi restaurant in London. The atmosphere is nice and vibrant with a cozy feel to it. The menu has detailed pictures for every item they serve which in turn is really helpful for people who don't eat sushi often. Sushi can be pricey at times so the daily lunch specials really give added value. Get a bento box of your choice for under 15$. That is a great deal considering the quality and freshness ! Although you are not getting the same quantity as much as an all you can eat sushi buffet , what you are paying for is the QUALITY which makes for a very fulfilling sushi dining experience. This is my go-to sushi place in London! The space is on the smaller side, and the atmosphere is very calm - perfect for cute dinners with friends. The service was absolutely incredible (super nice waitress) and friendly. I ordered a sashimi box and it was an amazing price for what I got - quite a few pieces of quality sashimi, various side dishes, and a spicy roll. I love supporting local businesses mainly because I grew up in a family restaurant myself. We frequently seated customers close to closing time and sometime after as well. Today I arrived at Sushi Ya 35 minutes before they closed for lunch service and was told no dine in, takeout only. There were no other customers dining, they were not drowning in orders but they were willing to leave their dining room empty for 30 minutes before they took a 2 hour lunch break. The brown rice on the sushi though was great but not enough rice for the bento itself to pair with the meat. It's a small restaurant but I liked the laid back and intimate vibe. I would definitely go again and try some of their other options. The quality and offering is better than any of the other downtown spots that have popped up in the last three to five years. The quality of the green tea is superb. The location is cozy and intimate and the staff is very friendly, a great place for lunch or dinner. Prices are quite reasonable especially compared to some of the lesser quality places in the area. This is easily the best sushi in London. I have eaten at much more expensive places in Toronto and Sushi Ya beats them all. I would pay far more for it because the sushi chef is a Japanese born and trained, 3rd generation sushi chef and he selects only the best fish. I don't write a lot of reviews, but i had to for this wonderful place! I took a date there (First date), we got there around 8 not knowing they closed at 9. We ate our dinner, which was amazing. We ordered wine with dinner and a glass after. We talked and talked. We paid for the meal, everyone was so nice the whole time. On our way out I turned around to thank them for the great meal and saw the hours of operations...they had closed at 9, it was now 10:15pm! They had stayed open just for us!
