I made a reservation for the teppanyaki for 2, later the same day my friends wanted to join, I called to adjust a number of guests to 4, and was told they are fully booked. Alright, well I started getting excited. I dress up, I get my hair done and we are off to our dinner. We got seated at the 8 people table with 3 people already there, I expect the remaining 4 seats to fill up. Nope. Did not happen - the entire table was empty from 6:30 to 9 pm. I really missed my friends that night there... They had another teppanyaki table which was empty throughout the evening. The whole dining room was empty throughout the evening. Maybe 3 tables max were occupied. We ordered the menu for 90 euro each, a bottle of wine and I asked for a cup of green tea. Guys, this is the only Japanese restaurant that charges you for the green tea refills. Whaaaat? Dinner was a 6 course with some grilled seafood - salmon and cod, scallop and shrimp. Followed by the grilled chicken, steak, and lamb chops. Served with soup and salad and dessert. 250 euro for dinner for two, and we left thinking how much we overpaid for the meal. It was an OK meal, it wasn't bad, but it was very expensive for the food. Its like when you are eating at the buffet, it's not bad, but it's not going to blow your mind. I have an upcoming reservation in Sazanka, for my boyfriends birthday. He wanted to celebrate there, I am worried now. This place definitely ruined the teppanyaki dining for me.

Haha. So far all of the sushi I've had in Amsterdam has been bad, or at best- okay. Then I found this place. OMG! So fresh. So delicious. So well executed. Lovely interior and INCREDIBLE SERVICE. Yes I was yelling. Why? Because great service is the unicorn of Amsterdam. You know in your heart that it exists, but it's so rare that you may go your whole life and never find it. Well folks, I have found the Unicorn, and it's riding in with the best damned sushi in Amsterdam on it's back. We ordered the hot "house Sake" bottle from the menu. The bottle came out and my thought was "hmm, that's pretty small for €25" that was until they refilled it.... 5 TIMES!! I was so excited. The chef selection sashimi and wagyu beef roll are a must. I don't understand how it's been there so long but I guess it's because the Dutch in general don't understand food and have a very hard time identifying quality in what they're eating. There are maybe 4 sushi places in amsterdam that are worth eating at and none of them are great. Even yamazato is about as goid as your average, walk in off the street, sushi bar in NY or California. Sushi is one of the things I've missed deeply in my 12 years living here and Otaru is a perfect example of why.

There are certainly better sushi bars in Amsterdam and there are certainly worse. I have had great service here before and I have had so so service. But overall I think it's a good place. Everything always tastes pretty fresh and the prices aren't too bad. I usually go for one of the menus when I'm there because it's easier and a lot cheaper to order that way. Usually I get the sushi menus which range between 10 and €18. I have also had their fried rice which is not too bad. On a side note their delivery service is quick which makes for an easy dinner if you're being too lazy to cook. Also I think the chefs take turns in delivering the food because I've often seen the chef show up to deliver. That's quite a funny thing.
