Looking for cheap and filling sushi? This is it. Only you won't be walking out with a belly full of fish but rice, of which they give you obscene amounts of. My Chirashi don had 4 times the amount of rice I've ever had with any kind of chirashi bowl, and the slices of fish were so thin you could see through them, literally. Filling in rolls are not even half the width of the rice surrounding it.
CONS
-essentially cooking soy sauce at the table, high in sodium overpowering the fish
-staff: responsive and quick service, but lackluster and unwelcoming
-compensating for the paltry amounts of fish with a massive amount of rice
-some freezer burned fish
PROS
-quick service and meal preparation
-cheap (for Oxford) and filling (due to rice bombs)
-plenty of choice
-two-for-one deals on basic rolls
DETAIL:
Reason I chose this place over the one two doors down was because their menu had more options, and prices were cheaper. As mentioned, it's cheap because they essentially give you just rice garnished with slivers of fish. The fish itself are fishy, but to be fair, I've yet to have any non-fishy sushi in Oxford. Maybe just too far inland.
Overall, Two Stars for the sly proprietor who thought of cheaper prices via stingy slices of fish at the expense of rice (by overloading it and leading to waste). Three Stars for menu choices, general economic value and result, i.e., a tasting of sushi and bloated rice belly. This last one beneficial for students and others on a budget. Honestly, I would have been happy with a standard amount of rice and meager amounts of fish over the guilt of purposefully leaving rice behind and the obvious intent of the owner to pull the wool over your eyes. Most savvy diners will realize cheaper prices usually mean compromise in either food quality or quantity. My belly was satisfied okay, but the wallet was certainly happy. read more
