Ok, so maybe it's not authentic Japanese! Here's how it makes up for it: 1. The location is convenient, but also hidden. You've probably walked past this place a billion times but never even noticed it existed. 2. Cheap! Enough sushi for two, plus soup and green tea cost $25.50 TOTAL (including tax.) 3. Melts in your mouth, not on your chopsticks. This is NOT one of those stiff-globs-of-crap sushi places have where you have to gag it down. A friend told me about this great sushi place in Melrose. She explained to me the location and of course I could not find it right away. It's tucked away in the back of Main St., in the Shaw's parking lot, a very small dingy storefront. But the food is awesome and affordable. A must: spicy tuna roll and spicy salmon roll. I feel like I need to report the good AND bad experiences with places to give a fair and objective review. Tonight my fiance and I ordered Sushi Corner (She frequents their delivery service) and had just a terrible experience. Our original order for 4 simple rolls off their menu was placed at 9:00pm. The language barrier was incredibly difficult to overcome from the woman on the phone. We had to repeat our address several times and our phone number just as many. Fine, it happens, it seems fine. They managed to take the credit card number with issue, that's for sure. 30 mins til delivery time, yum. 10:00pm rolls around. No sushi? So let's call them up. Their answer? We had the wrong number. Uhhh - wrong number? We gave it to you several times. You also have our address. WTF? Nope, the address they read back matched nothing close to what we said. Ok, so we try and repeat it all again and they say "Ok!" and hang up. So 10:45 now passes and I decide it is time to get on the phone - again, WTF? So the girl said yea we can not find your address! I'm like ok, once. Fine, no big deal. A SECOND time!? After I've given you my number repeatedly. Unacceptable. I refuse to eat sushi that is now almost 2 hours old and say either deliver fresh sushi, or refund my payment. I asked her why they don't call if they're having trouble? She actually gets mad at ME and says "WE DIDN'T HAVE YOUR RIGHT NUMBER!" I said yea.. that's not my fault. Fix your data input issues or fix your language barrier issues. I knew this was something special from the moment we walked in and were greeted by our hostess, the five-year-old daughter of the buisness' owners, riding a scooter and asking us "are you for here, or to go?" This is clearly where the locals go. It has to be, because no one else would be able to find the place. You lierally have to go down an alley and turn a corner. Although the place seems to focus on take-out/delivery, we dined in and had a great time eating and talking with our young hostess. I had the chance to try some sushi and some udon. It's a five star place and I don't take five star rating lightly. I have been there twice since we moved to Melrose. Both times, I have been more than satisfied with the quality of the food. the price is just right for a tiny sushi place. I had Nabe Yaki Udon, the noodle soup with chicken, lots of veggies, sea weed with light broth. It was GREAT! the sushi was quite fresh and tasty too. Lauren R. is right about green tea, it's delicious. Plus it has the smell of toasted sesame blended in. PS: it's a bit hard to find if you don't already know where it is even with the help of Google Map. You have to get in there by the alley way next to Shaw's and it's on your left. Added on Dec 18 - this place has become one of the regular neighborhood places for us. My boyfriend who usually refuses to eat sushi loves the maki here! There seems to be a trend in asain eateries in Melrose. It seems that the first time I eat from a place like that, the food stinks, but subsequent visits the food is excellent. First, Melrose Garden then Sushi Corner. The first time I tried this place, I didnt like the sushi at all, it was tasteless and bland. However, since its so close to home I decided to give it one more chance. And I was blown away. Try the chicken tempura maki and the patriot maki. Some of the best sushi I have had in a while. The sushi in this place is just as good, if not, better than Sake in Rte. 1. The restaurant itself is very small (think 3/4 the size of your living room, probably), so I dont think I would eat in, but the decor does a good job of sealing you off from the outside world. Its such a hole-in-the-wall place but the food isnt. Give it a try. Its a hard place to find too. Its in the alleyway directly next to shaws, and across from the post office. Sushi corner I won't ever go back to this place. For those of you who have read my reviews, I love trying sushi places, and hold them to a relatively high standard. I especially look for a sushi place on the north shore that is good. Sushi Corner, you had some interesting charm, but did not meet or even come close to my standard. I ordered my standby foods: Miso Soup, Spicy tuna, and a plate of sashimi The miso soup was not prepared correctly. Heavily watered down with very little miso paste. The only thing it really had going for it was that it was hot. The spicy tuna was not made with very good quality fish. In fact the fish was sort of sad looking. The taste was completely bland and unappealing. Next came the sashimi platter. 4 types of fish. Yellowtail, tuna, salmon and red snapper. The tuna that was on the sashimi plate was of the lowest quality. The piece barely held together and looked like it had cracks in it when picked up The red snapper was actually still frozen. STILL FROZEN. The yellowtail had a fishy smell to it, which to me indicates old, not fresh, fish. The salmon was the only redeeming item. Smoked salmon is hard to screw up. 2*. Would never visit again. Even if you paid me. Sushi Corner, please stay in your little corner. read more

I have purchased sushi here over the last 4-5 years. Initially, the food and service was very good, if not excellent. The orders were typically ready in abut 20 minutes and everything was fresh and hot. The last couple of times I've been here the service and quality has dramatically changed for the worse. Tonight I tried to phone in an order for sushi and was put on hold for ~ 10 minutes and eventually hung up, I tried to call back several times and got a message stating that the voice mail was full and they couldn't accept my call. I only live ~ 5 minutes away so I dropped in to place my order - the were some customers at the tables and many more waiting for their orders. And people were not happy - I was about to learn why. I placed my order (spicy tuna rolls, spider rolls and tempura) and was told it would be available in, maybe 30 minutes but the girl couldn't tell me exactly when it would be ready. I came back 45 minutes later only to find the order was not ready. In fact, she said it had not even been started. I asked for my money back and she said the order would be ready in 2 minutes. Sure enough, a bag came out of the back and I left. The spider rolls and tempura were cold and soggy. There was definitely a communication problem as the counter and probably a general lack of restaurant experience. During my previous visits I had a similar encounter. The two young boys working the counter were more interested in playing games on their smart phones than dealing with the customers. Communication was difficult, at best, and the order was late and cold. Too bad because this place used to be really good, reasonably priced, and convenient. read more

I really like this place. I live in Malden so finding a good sushi place nearby is pretty tough. For a 10 minute drive, this is great...there's always parking in the lot and there's never traffic heading to Melrose. It's not easy to find this place if you've never been...it's literally behind some restaurant on Main Street in the back lot. This is a family owned restaurant and you can tell by the decor...it's not incredibly tacky but it's also not a place to take a girl to for a first date (well, depends on the gal...if you want to wow her, then no. but if you want to show her your anti-corporate chain restaurant side, this is the place. sorry...i digress). Let's get to the main reason why we go to restaurants...FOOD! We like to start things off with the Avocado Salad...dressing is tasty with a little kick. Avocados are usually just right...not too ripe and not too firm. They have a vast selection of sushi. The ingredients are pretty fresh. If you're a sports fan, they have makis for Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics. Perhaps they'll have a Bruins Maki when they win the Stanley Cup. Creative with their specialty makis...some with mango and avo, they even have one with fried sweet potato. What I really like and find a great deal is the Cooked Maki Sushi Boat. I think it's $50 for 65 pieces. Perfect for 4-5 people. Sushi combos come with a miso soup too. Their noodles are alright. If you're getting any tempura with udon, make sure you have your tempura on the side or else it'll be soggy. The unagi donburi is good...don't think you can mess it up anywhere. Got the Chicken Katsu last night and the portions were more than I can handle along with the sushi...a plate full of fried breaded tender chicken breasts with some tempura fried green beans. Sauce and rice on the side. It's a cozy place for a few friends. They can't handle big parties but we've had dinner for 8 there before. They started doing deliveries too so that's an option if you want to have some sushi for your party at home. Sushi Corner has been on our regular rotation for sushi for years now and they never cease to please. Their Edamame is always perfect- warm, crisp and not overly salty. The spicy seafood salad is outstanding - delicious with the right amount of kick. We typically order: Patriot maki, Fire Rainbow, Fire Dragon, Summer maki, Philadelphia maki, Melrose maki, Shrimp w mango maki, V8 maki, and all is fabulous. The fish is akways fresh and the price affordable. We will always call our order in early since they get busy quickly. The staff is friendly, professional and personable. A lovely little place with great service and fresh fish. The lunch specials (which include miso soup) are nicely priced for what you get (~$8-$10), although you should definitely expect lunch-sized portions. I ordered the chirashi lunch special, and my friend ordered the sushi special (6 pieces of chef's choice nigiri sushi -- which ended up being salmon, tuna, and fluke -- plus a salmon roll) and we got an order of inari to share, and that was just the right amount of food for us. Plus lots and lots of toasted rice green tea. Even though my friend (it was her first sushi experience) and I had gotten there on the early side of the lunch hour, it stayed relatively quiet in the dining room, with a good amount of take-away business; it wasn't terribly crowded and we got great service, which made it a pleasant lunchtime sushi experience. Dinner was a similarly pleasant and uncrowded experience. They do have a menu of special rolls which tend to be on the more affordable side than most, but otherwise, it's mostly the standards, and they do them well. We ordered a la carte off the sushi menu, plus miso soup, and pretty much ate ourselves silly on yummy, fresh fish. It was very cold the day we went for dinner, and while they had a giant dish space heater on warming the place, every time the door opened, you could feel it. So, while generally the small dining room seems to encourage people to order for take-away, the downside is that, if you dine-in, people will be walking straight into your dining experience. Overall, a great little place with decent prices. Not likely to replace the Kotobukya little sushi bar as my regular go-to place, but nice if you're in the neighborhood. read more

I have stopped in for lunch today. It's hidden from the main street and the entrance is next to Shaw's parking lot. When I went in, I found the space was small, but the ambience was quite warm and friendly. It's quiet and only consists of 4-5 tables. I guess most people opt for delivery or takeout instead. However, the food is excellent. I ordered Chutoro (which is relatively rare to see in most sushi restaurants), Ika, smoked salmon, and Hirame for sashimi, and Hotate, Uni, and Ikura for sushi. The portion was decent, also the texture of each piece of sashimi couldn't be better, just hit the spot I think. They even offered real green tea, which you could find some tea leaves in your tea cup. Great. read more

You have to search for this place. It's really "in the corner", in the parking lot of Shaw's and CVS. It's tiny with 4 tables. We ate in and were the only ones eating in. People came in and out and they all called ahead and got take out orders. For the price, variety, freshness, and portions, Sushi Corner is a great place to go for Japanese food. The prices are comparable to other Japanese restaurants (but not like Fugakyu prices - cheaper than that). I had the katsu chicken and was given a huge portion cooked to perfection. The sushi was good and fresh. The workers there speak Chinese, not Japanese - but that's typical of all the Japanese restaurants in the area (besides at Porter Square Exchange). The only issue was that they didn't have curry but everything else was great! I would definitely go back again. What a great find! Oh, it's BYOB too - another plus! read more

The best of what hole-in-the-wall sushi places have to offer... and do expect a hole-in-the-wall. It's a super-casual environment seating perhaps four at the sushi bar and 16-18 at tables. The worst I can say about them is that being such a small operation, they occasionally have a problem with consistency, both in service and food quality. But, I consider that a small price to pay for the typically exceptional food and service at outstanding prices. They don't go in for fancy presentation as a formal sushi restaurant might. But, I have many times had sushi here that rivaled or bested sushi I've had at Fugaku, Ginza, New Ginza, Blue Fin, or Ma Soba. The head chef is very friendly also. read more

It's in a somewhat hidden location where the entrance is from the parking lot (next to Shaw's), and the restaurant is small, but their food is absolutely amazing. Every time we go there, we order the same things: sushi corner roll, spider roll, spicy scallop, spicy tuna, ocean maki, twin maki, patriot maki. The ingredients are always fresh (we have been to other sushi restaurants before where the avocado was browning or the sushi rice was a disaster) I have brought many friends here and no one was ever disappointed and some have even become regular customers there! This is probably one of the oddest locations I've ever had sushi. We are talking about totally hidden behind a main building. I was looking for 18C then couldn't find it anywhere after circling around, then noticed an awning in the back and had to enter the grocery store parking lot to get to it. Yay I had found it! Then opening the door revealed a tiny restaurant with about 3 tables and a 5 seat sushi bar. It reminded me a bit of a garage. Very mom and pop. The menu was inexpensive. We decided to go with 2 of the lunch specials including miso soup. I was not a big fan of the miso. It had a strong fish taste to it. I chose combo #1 with 6 nigiri and a salmon roll for $9.95. I asked to make it a spicy salmon which was $1 more. The cuts of nigiri were good. I had a good variety of fish, even with the toro tuna they never put on those platters. The salmon roll was fine. I was glad I upgraded it. My boyfriend got the sushi sashimi combo for $14.95. It was a good amount for the price. No roll was included so we split the Red Sox Maki for $8.95. The maki was a tasty roll made with eel and topped with tuna and tobiko. I found all the sushi to be fresh tasting. For the price of things it was a great value. The atmosphere in the restaurant was a bit messy. The walls were carelessly painted with paint over the light covers and around the ceiling and the ceiling was an unattractive black color with white showing in some spots. Obviously you wouldn't go for the atmosphere but why not use painters tape to make it look nice, the place is tiny enough it shouldn't take long to do it properly. Today was my first visit here, and I can't say I loved it but I will probably give it another try. -The people were very friendly, quick to jump up from their meal to make my order- which of course made me feel bad for interrupting their dinner. -The sushi- I got my standard spicy tuna and idaho (sweet potato tempura). The flavor of the idaho roll was good, but I didn't care for the mayo. The spicy tuna roll was just alright- really not much "spicy" and kind of falling apart when I was trying to eat it. I don't pretend to be a sushi expert, but the tuna did taste fresh and not too fishy. -The rest- I got the wonton udon soup, which was exceedingly hot, even when I drove 10 minutes to get it home. The flavor was good. The noodles were still nice and chewy. The wontons were yummy. And I will be eating it for several meals as it was a huge portion. read more

I used to love this place and get takeout every week... But then I had a few "creepy" experiences with the sushi and now I won't be back. First, I had what I call, a "hairy unagi" experience. The eel was bristly and it freaked me out. Then I had some not- so-good spicy tuna rolls. These are my sushi staple, so when I get bad spicy tuna rolls it can ruin my night. Lastly, the roll that ensured I will never eat there again, was the salmon teriyaki roll. It smelled and tasted fishy and was strangely salty. Really fishy and salty!! The first time I tried Sushi Corner was about 2 years ago on my first date with my boyfriend (which we are still together). Inside the restaurant environment it gives off a cozy feeling. Sushi Corner is very convenient to get to because it has a parking lot right outside and delivery service is available (only around Melrose area). I fell in love with this place because of the welcoming feeling you get when you are there and the waitress is very helpful along with the owner's daughter. She is so adorable. At times she would set up the tables for the guests. The sushi is of great quality compare to a restaurant that I have visited, called Yoki's in Wellington Square. Although, Yoki's is a high end restaurant it is over priced compare to the price at Sushi Corner which is affordable. If you want a light and affordable dinner this is place to go. I also tried the tea which is very soothing. It has a light rice taste to the tea, but it is still delicious. Lastly, if you are lazy you can order it through the phone and have them delivery if you live in range or just drive to the restaurant to pick up your order. It is a very easy process and they accept all major credit cards. I definitely recommend Sushi Corner for sushi. I haven't tried the other dishes yet, but next time when I have a chance to dine it I will try it. read more

After moving to Melrose, I was convinced that this would be our new favorite sushi place and we'd order out here frequently on Friday nights/weekends. I ordered their sweet potato rolls (good), mushroom rolls (cold, marinated mushrooms (yuck), tofu tempura rolls (tofu not fresh) and veggie tempura (cheap tempura, small pieces of fried leftover veggies, not the nice large pieces of veggies that you'd expect for the price) My fiancee got a sashimi dish that contained halfway frozen pieces and room temp pieces. He said the spicy tuna rolls werent that great. Mediocre sushi at a good price is ok. Mediocre sushi at $50, half of which we had to throw out because it was not good sucks. The lady gave me attitude because she had to call me to come to the door- even though in the "notes" section I made a comment to please call because our doorbell was broken.
