As meticulous as I try to be about keeping my knives sharp, they have dulled over the years…read more Therefore, I thought it best to seek a professional, local blade sharpener. After doing a quick Internet search, I discovered several options in the San Antonio area, including T.O.O. (Texas Outdoor Organizers) Knife & Tool Service, a service near Vance Jackson and Huebner Road (phone number 210-691-3330), Diamond Knife and Shear, Star Knife Sharpening, and Alamo Blade Sharpening. Many of these providers offer mobile and/or mail-in service. I wanted to get same-day service, so I called around and set up an appointment with Alamo Blade Sharpening in New Braunfels. Ernie Freeland, and his wife Debbie, own Alamo Blade Sharpening. Ernie works out of his mobile unit, but I caught him at his home for an appointment. I dropped off my collection of 5 knives, including a serrated bread knife, and a pair of shears, and they were done and sharpened within half an hour. Ernie is friendly and does good work. My 6 knives were restored to optimum sharpness and it only set me back about $40. I must point out that Ernie charges by length of blade, so the cost of sharpening is different for each knife and shear. In addition to kitchen knives, Ernie also sharpens hunting knives, clipper blades, various kinds of scissors (including surgical, and upholstery), hedge clippers/pruning shears, and chain saws. Just remember to take cash if your total price will be less than $10 because Ernie has a $10 minimum when using a credit card.

Jay was absolutely amazing and so patient. Her knife took about 2 hrs to make and we had such a great time it felt like 20 minutes. He had great stories and kept us engaged. He communicated clearly with rules, expectations, and what each step was that she had to work on next. He had us laughing so much. Vic was another brother that was great. He kept my youngest, 9 yr old, engaged and had her complete attention. He was patient and helped her stand correctly and how to hold the hammer. And he had to repeat himself many times but never lost patience with her. He showed us how to make different nail swords and let her help too. This is a family business and honestly it is a must for any visitors, tourist, or even Texans that never see what's around them (like us!). I totally recommend bringing your family or friends. We won't regret it and you'll go home with a unique gift that you made yourself.

I called in the morning and asked if they had any openings at 4 and the guy on the phone was kinda rude and said technically yes but I was gonna close early but I guess I can fit you in. I was super thankful and excited but when we showed up I was shocked by the unprofessional, vulgar and unsafe behavior of the worker. He sat off to the side making his own bracelet and gave us almost no guidance and didn't help or check on us. He told us to do whatever the F we wanted and he didn't care. Halfway through he informed us he was an "idiot" because he didn't have us sign the safety waiver! Honestly we had fun but it was extremely uncomfortable and we just kinda had to figure out what to do and listen to him tell uncomfortable stories and cuss up a storm. We also never got his name but he was a younger man in his 20s.

He was incredibly helpful & explained what was going on and made sure I left with a working setup. Before I went in, I spoke on the phone with Teresa and she was also very helpful and gave me some ideas of what the issue could be. You can really tell they know their stuff and, more importantly, they care about helping you out. Everyone I talked to was friendly, patient, and thorough - no rushing you out the door, just good honest service. I didn't catch the names of a few of the other people that have helped me out but just know they're all great! It's rare to find that kind of service these days, I highly recommend them!

Everyone I contacted told me they don't handle what I had or the type gas that was in the cylinders. Even hazardous waste locations turned me down. I called them and they couldn't answer me right away and would talk with the owner on what he thought I could do. They called back a couple hours later and would take them off my hands and also made me aware of transport safety issues I wasn't aware of. I am very thankful to them and their helpfulness. Good folks work there.
