FYI, we haven't even been at the beach since covid. So, yeah... first time in the water in a while and learning how to surf. With great instructors anything is possible and it is never too late to learn something new. In the water they made sure we were safe and guided us thoroughly. My wife was able to stand on the board on her first wave. It was really fun. I needed more help and they were always there to coach us right along. The team arrived on time with surfboards, bodyboards, tent and wetsuits for the kids. They helped them every step of the way and were engaged 100% of the time. I really appreciated that while the coaches worked with the kids there was always one coach who was just looking out for their safety. They easily gained the kids' trust and I was surprised how kids who had zero interest in surfing eventually tried it and had fun doing it, thanks to the coaches' encouragement and enthusiasm. Perfect combination of fun and professional! They were also a pleasure to work with on email/phone/text amd that's so important to busy working mamas like me. Mike was great. Met us with board and wetsuits and met each of us at our level. He was very hands on and out there in the water with us the whole time. We met by the bathrooms of El Porto by lifeguard station 12 and picked up our wetsuits from their cars. From there, we headed towards a less crowded portion of the water by the rocks, and did a quick yoga flow before going into the basics of how to pop up and hold the board. After the lesson, we got assigned our boards and went off into the water. I think both instructors tried to spread their attention as evenly as possible. I was able to stand up multiple times and surf some one-foot waves (go me!). The time flew by, and once it was over, we brought the surfboards back to their cars. They'll take Venmo for tips. I would suggest wearing your flip flops to the beach since the ground was really hot, and also bringing a water bottle for post-surf. There's paid parking available in the lot although the meters seem to be broken since I still got a ticket even though my parking should've been valid. Otherwise there's very limited street parking. You can leave your valuables in the instructor's car. You can book private lessons on the website or small group lessons as well. Definitely book the lesson - it's a great workout and you'll have so much fun!

We weren't sure how it would go, but coach Elliot made all the difference. He was incredibly patient, kind, and understanding of our son's needs. The first couple of attempts were tough- our son was nervous about riding the waves and facing the unknown. But coach Elliot never rushed him and offered steady encouragement the whole time. The boards were in good condition and they have boogie boards as well. I first met Paul when I booked his place on Airbnb for my birthday trip down to Redondo Beach. Upon hearing it was my birthday, he kindly offered me a surf lesson and wow, I'm so glad I took him up on it! Since I'm a bigger guy and balance isn't exactly my strong suit, I signed up for his 4-lesson package for the week. Paul's reputation in the local surf community is well-earned , he's clearly been doing this for a long time, and it shows in his knowledge, technique, and calm teaching style. He knows the South Bay surf scene inside out and even used an app to track which beaches had beginner-friendly waves that week. We were out at 6 AM most days catching the early sets. Before we hit the water, he walked me through surf fundamentals, warm-ups, and safety tips, all with meticulous attention to detail. He fitted me with a wetsuit and recommended a 9-foot board that made learning easier and way more fun. The first two days were full of "oops" moments (lots of them!), but Paul never lost patience. Every time I felt frustrated, he was right there, positive, motivating, and breaking things down in ways that made sense. By day 3, I was paddling deeper with him by my side, and by day 4... I actually stood up and rode a wave! For someone my size with very little balance, that was a huge milestone. What impressed me most was Paul's ability to read his student and adapt his coaching to what works best. He truly cares about his students' progress. Thanks to him, I've kept surfing regularly since that week and even bought my own board (a Helm, which he helped me get at a great discount, ask him about it!).
