Recently, I had an issue with my shower. I requested maintenance from the tenant portal and from that moment til the moment everything was fixed was a breeze. Miguel, the head maintenance man at Surfcaster, tackled the problem and helped each step of the way. He was very communicative and very proficient at what he does. Nope, much better in the area for this price. No amenities, some really bad neighbors (most are great but a few have caused most of the building to clear out), loud alley, pier is closed so no need to live close to that anymore and management took away roof access. The price for apartments have dropped $600 in the past 2 years should explain everything that is going on with this place. Its gross and overpriced with zero updates. Oddly it always happens on weekdays.First, I appreciate living by the beach (this location is really close to the shore and OB pier), but also close to a lot of noisy restobars and dumpsters. I also understand this building is really old and is still under construction (but I never see anyone working on it, tho). I also appreciate how convenient it was to be able to lease without having to be personally here as it was a tight schedule (looking back, it was a very bad idea).Now, what I didn't appreciate is how dirty and not ready the apartment was on move in day. The walls, cabinets, baseboards, ceiling, etc. were not painted from the previous tenant. Oils spills and splatters over the walls and cabinets by the stove. The stove and oven were very dirty, and they were not cleaned from the previous tenant. Paint chips and stains all over the sink, baseboard, walls, counters, ceiling, and cabinets. Nail holes on the walls. Uneven flooring. Old finishings and appliances were not even cleaned or replaced. The thermostat doesn't work. The faucet in the shower wasn't working. And other parts of the apartment that still needed fixing. There are only 3 washer and dryer for the whole building and they are very, very, very dirty.The cleaner did come the day after moving in and sort of clean (she was mostly on her phone), it didn't do much.Although maintenance, Miguel has tried to do his best to do some of the paint touch-ups, which is not really his job to paint the whole apartment. it is very frustrating and very inconvenient to keep rearranging and cleaning in between the maintenance run-ins and scheduling a time for it, esp when maintenance is only here for half a day twice a week.Basically, I wish they had taken the time to make sure everything was done by maintenance and was clean properly prior to move in as it would make a more convenient move in and less stressful for both parties. I really would rather spend my time and effort settling down rather than keep waiting for repairs and cleaning after them.Other than that, the manager is on site sometimes. She has been easy to deal with so far. Miguel is pleasant and quick with dealing with maintenance issues as well when he is on site, which is only half a day for 2 days a week.****Beware: Photos on the website are not updated.****Not all apartments have a view. Mine is a dumpster.****This place is not well maintained and very dirty.****SAFETY HAZARD: The elevator has no lights sometimes and was not disclosed during the move in or leasing process. garage gate where you park your car is also broken and doesn't close all the time. Rooftop does not have lights and has construction materials and trash like bottles/beer cans/cigarette butts laying around.someone is ALWAYS SMOKING WEED in the apartments (and the manager is not doing anything about it), and since it's a small area, it runs through the apartments. homeless people hang out by the corner on the parking lot, smoking weed and playing loud music. There's also dog owners in the apartment who leave their dogs for a while, barking outside the balcony. Tenants with old cars and motorcycles that are very LOUD whenever they start them. and the alley in the back of the building is full of restobars and some alley events, which is really really LOUD.Lastly, there are NO AMENITIES!!!!​ read more

I stayed here while on business in San Diego and I have to say it was the best decision I could have made.. The BEST place I could have stayed. Close to everything you could want to experience, while having the beach minutes away. Absolutely no need for a vehicle, as it is centrally located, not to mention Olivia, the property manager is AWESOME! I need to update my prior review of the Surfcaster. After living there for 2 year this place has drastically gone downhill. The parent company no longer employs a full time on-site manager. The current manager does not fix anything. The on-site laundry has been broken since January. There used to be 3 washers, and there is now one that sounds like it is unbalanced the whole time. There used to be 2 dryers. There is now only one working dryer. Every time I asked the manager when these would be fixed she said by the end of the month. 8 months later I moved out and they had not been fixed. 2 months before I moved out the elevator stopped working. I asked if it would be working by the time I moved out so I didn't need to try to carry everything up and down the stairs. She said, she would try. It didn't happen. She hired movers for me and told me I would be splitting the bill with other tenants. I had to pay the entire thing. She told me she would reimburse me for some of the bill on my deposit. Guess what? Correct, that didn't happen either. Secure building? Not really. We have people roaming through the building all the time. I have had mail/fedex packages never make it to my door multiple times. The door are always propped open, and the manager never seems to proactively let the tenants know to keep the doors shut. The back stairs took two years, and they were torn down when I left, so I am not sure if they have been built yet. So, if you have made it this far in my review, let's talk about the good part. The ocean is a half block away, and Raglin's is also a half block away. The rooftop is awesome!! read more

I LOVE LIVING HERE! I recently moved from the East Coast and finding a decent apartment in Ocean Beach can be difficult and very competitive. We had looked at the Surfcaster when we first got here but ended up subletting elsewhere for a bit until we found jobs etc. When we were ready for our own place we had a hellish experience-- until the Surfcaster! Turns out a renovated studio had just opened up so it was kismet. Alicia is amazing and honestly a big reason of why we ended up living here. She is so kind and helpful and made the entire process very easy and straightforward (which was such a relief after dealing with many shady landlords with hidden fees). Our apartment has stainless steel appliances, wood laminate floors, two closets, a garage parking spot, lots of cabinet storage, a small patio of our own... and then the roof! Beautiful views. Also, everything is nearby. Even on my morning walks to let the dog out I get to walk a couple buildings down to the pier and look out over the ocean. We regularly go to the farmers market just a block over. We could not be happier here!! read more

I have lived at Surfcaster for a long time. I love it. The location speaks for itself. I have seen a lot of property managers and liked them all. But Olivia Wilbur is my favorite. Any issue is dealt with efficiently and professionally. She has upgraded our roof, fixed our elevator, and got new washers and dryers. If I ever move, I will miss her personally. My experience here has been great so far largely due to the on site manager Alicia. She is always positive and responsive, always willing to listen and to help. Any thing I needed addressed in my own unit was addressed immediately. Any on site problems with the building are addressed asap or either Alicia lets you know she is aware and whatever it is, is in process. I hope to live here for a long time. read more

I was looking for a small botique community by the ocean and loved visiting Surfcaster Apartments. The management was very friendly and the neighbors inviting and willing to meet me as I walked through. Loved the rooftop patio area not to mention being able to walk about 300 feet to the ocean front. For an ocean lover, like myself, this is nurvana. read more

SO VERY MANY PRO'S TO SURFCASTER LIVING! And my apartment is a rare, one-of-a-kind unit in his building, as well as all of Ocean Beach. It is one of the very few one bedrooms in the building, an end unit on the top floor with only one shared wall, roof above, one unit below. The exterior East-facing walls of both the living room & bedroom are 95% floor-to-ceiling windows with sliding doors. It is one of the highest buildings in the neighborhood, so the view from this top (3rd) floor is unobstructed by any other buildings. From my windows is a view of the rooftops of downtown OB up to the top of the hill going above Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Um, no, not an ocean view, except from the end of the balcony. But there are no 3rd floor one bedrooms with an unobstructed ocean view here, only studios. It's about 610 square feet, with a spacious living room, spacious bedroom, and a lot of closet space. The bathroom has plenty of room to move around, with a full size tub and decent counter top & storage space. The kitchen is on the smaller side. I would not recommend it for someone with a passion for gourmet cooking. But it does have a full size stove & fridge, as well as a double sink with garbage disposal. Most of the parking is covered below ground (one vehicle per unit), with a private, secured garage door. The management and maintenance staff are on top of any issues that arise, with an on-site, very well-organized, professional manager, Alicia. As icing on this cake, there is a spacious rooftop patio with nice furniture and a 360-degree view of the ocean, the pier, La Jolla, Sea World & its fireworks, and the mountains off to the East. THERE ARE SOME CONS TO KEEP IN MIND. Not many to mention, although you might want to consider the few, especially if you're a light sleeper. Being this high up with the unfettered view means you also hear everything going on in OB to some extent. That would include the occasional hooting of the bar &restaurant crowds (especially during football season & the OB Street Fair), sporadic revving of motorcyclists, and, unfortunately, the neighbors in the next building, which faces our building. From here on the 3rd floor, you don't see them, but you can hear them whenever they come outside for a gabfest, or to hold a barbecue/patio party in their space between the two buildings. Alicia is trying to navigate the situation with as much diplomacy as possible. There's also the matter of the OB Brewery, the back of which is directly across the alley from the Surfcaster. It has been unopened & under construction for the last 5-ish years, so it hasn't presented any serious issues as yet. However, they've installed a 3rd floor patio (eye level with the Surfcaster 3rd floor) and no apparent sound or visual barriers of any sort. No word on the patio's hours of operation. It remains to be seen & heard as to what will happen when they finally open. I'm sure Alicia will do all that is possible to address the issue should it become a problem. But it is an unknown at the date of this review. I'VE LOVED IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT! I have thoroughly enjoyed living in this unit for the past 8 years, and could go on for 8 more, except that I've decided to grow up and purchase some real estate. As a friend recently commented on his first visit to my apartment, "This might be the nicest apartment I have seen in Ocean Beach." This is going to make an excellent home for some lucky single or couple who want to experience the laid-back urban/ocean lifestyle, and all the unique quirkiness of the Ocean Beach community. This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the OB pier, which is less than a half block from the Surfcaster's front door. read more

Please be wary of this company! Thank heavens my lease was only for six months... their unethical practices will make your tenancy unpleasant. Also, please do not be fooled like I was with the initial presentation of the company and units. They are overpriced for what you are getting in the end. Their service is unscrupulous and inefficient. To begin with, they advertise falsely about their properties. I want to also emphasize, they do not inform the potential tenant about any "modifications" to what was advertised and agreed upon until AFTER they have taken a deposit...at which point you are told it will take a minimum of a week or two to return it to you if you change your mind. They were dishonest about the cost of the unit, assigned parking, additional fees and some of the features. I have sinced learned this was a common practice and my experience was not unique but rather others had experienced the very same treatment. I should also mention, as a company that claims to be well managed, there was on-going plumbing issues that took a great deal of time to be fixed. For a higher than the norm price point, this is particulary unacceptable. It would be too long to write the hell that I have endured for the remainder of my lease. Please save yourselves! I have rented from two other management companies in the past and nothing comes close to the unethical practices of this company. I would caution everyone to read the lease they provide very carefully, but in this case, they violated even that. It sickens me that companies can get away with misleading people and then ignoring them rather than following through with a reasonable solution. read more

The Surfcaster Apartments are in an amazing location in Ocean Beach! Located right next to the pier with full access to the nightlife, this location is great for any young couple or single adult looking to enjoy San Diego's beach life! Surfcaster has amazing views from the West side of the building and is 100 yards from the Ocean Beach Pier! If you love to surf or be outside in a exciting area, this is the place for you. Surfcaster continues to update the rooms and Alicia (property manager) does a great job of getting your feedback on the place so she can renovate accordingly. As a renter in San Diego for the last 10 years parking has been one of the biggest issues, and Surfcaster takes care of you by providing an underground parking garage with elevator access to each level. Maintenance is provided quickly and you can access and monitor you maintenance requests online. When something went wrong, it was fixed within 24 hours! Email notifications are sent out regarding current events and local happenings. The roof top deck has an amazing view of Ocean Beach city and an even better view of the beach! Great for a quiet place to read or get work done, while also enjoying the beauty of the surrounding area. The community is friendly and easy going. Less than 30 apartment in the entire complex which makes life here very laid back. I lived in the Surfcaster Apartment complex for just over a year and it was a great living experience. This was the first property that kept me up to date on the issues going on at the property. For example, the city did work on the Ocean Beach piping system for a couple months. We were updated when parking or access to the property was going to be interrupted. We were also notified when the estimated time of the project would be complete and when changes were made. It was nice to know that you had someone looking out for you, even if it was bad news. I run an online business and I have packages coming in daily. Alicia always notified me when I had a package that had arrived or a notice. Eventually, i authorized her to sign for it and hold it in the office bc I could trust her so much! Alicia makes living easy and she does a great job managing this property! Highly recommend Surfcaster for anyone interested in the lifestyle mentioned above! read more
