One of the best experiences of my life. You know, besides getting married and having kids and all that stuff. I can't stop asking myself, "How did I go this long; live this close to the ocean, and never surf before today?" Short answer: because I was sure it would be too hard. I didn't have the right body type; I didn't hang with the surfing crowd in my teen years. There's no way I would be coordinated enough to get up on a board, let alone ride a way. With my family's business, I hardly saw the beach growing up, even with it just a few miles away. But, somehow, I found myself trying it out. Call it a midlife crisis; it's less of an investment than Botox and a tummy tuck. I met with Quaid, who very calmly and expertly explained all the parts of the board. He walked me through all the steps, from practicing on land (I'm sure I looked pretty silly, but he never laughed at me. I laughed at me, but he remained cheerfully professional and supportive) to riding the waves in the ocean. Hi! I'm Elena, an Italian professional journalist who is spending her third summer in LBI (you can find me on Twitter). I run into Nicole by chance, because she is friend of a friend of mine and proposed that I could learn how to surf with her help. I surfed in the past, but I wasn't good at all (I never manage to stand up on my board). The 8th of August Nicole taught me the rules for 15 minutes at Nelson beach, in LBI, and I rode every single wave for one hour! Immediately! What an awesome experience for our kids! My husband registered our two children (newly minted 5 yr old and 7 yr old) on a whim (literally saw a sign during a bike ride). I was so skeptical (as were my son and daughter) and we all turned out to be totally wrong. They had the absolute best time learning to surf with Mike and his team. The focus and determination they both exhibited was so impressive. The lessons were 90 minutes of pure fun and both kids gave it their all. Each of them tried SO HARD with massive smiles and progressed so quickly we could not believe it. We also booked a second lesson immediately. Long story short - it was awesome. Great surfing instruction with Quaid. I have to tell you, I was a little nervous going in. I'm 51 and fit but wasn't sure if I was too old to learn. Didn't help that the rest of the class, ages added together, were half my age. Head instructor Quaid put that concern to rest after 30 minutes in the water. The little kids were all shredding up the waves in quick order, and even I managed to catch a few waves myself. Great surf school. Very informal. All instructors are super personable and laid back. They are just as excited, when you catch your own wave, as you are. Can't say enough good things about them. I have experience with a few different surf instructors over the years--surfing is not the easiest thing to learn--and Nicole is by far the best! She is skilled and patient, supportive and motivating, and most of all she makes the lesson FUN. I have a a little bit of previous surf experience but she was able to help me improve and break bad habits. She is also very good with first timers, as I saw firsthand. 2 grandchildren and 3 nieces/nephews ages 7-11years Quaid was an outstanding instructor along with 2 other outstanding instructors--their names escape me at the moment. they all had 3 days of surf camp in lbi. they were instructed on the language, etiquette and surfboard design. also, rip currents and mechanics of surfing. all 5 were able to surf after 3 days of surf camp. their confidence level improved daily... the children never surfed prior to the 3 days of surf camp... safety of the children was the main concern of the instructors. we will be back next summer==2019... My children took a semi-private lesson with Mike. He was positive, enthusiastic and patient with both children who had different levels of experience, providing them with individual feedback that they could incorporate right on the spot. Lots of time in the water and many tries to get up on the board. Both kids loved it, learned and had fun in the process. This was our 2nd time with Surf With Nicole on LBI. Mike and his crew were amazing with our kids again. We did private lessons for our 6 y/o and semi-private lessons for our 9 y/o and 11 y/o. They were all able to surf together. Wetsuits, rashguards, and surfboards are all provided for you. You get a land lesson to get safety and the basics down and then it's on to the waves - your kids will definitely get up many times and build up their confidence. I bought lessons for my cousin and me for his birthday. Neither of us had any surfing experience, and he was a bit uneasy about the ocean. The two of us had an absolutely awesome time with Nicole. She made us super comfortable about being in the water, and was swimming with fins next to us the whole time so she could help out and give us tips. THIS WAS AWESOME!!!!! I always wanted to try surfing, but was intimidated by others with more experience. Surf with Nicole was the perfect opportunity to try something new. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Everything was explained really well in the dry-land training. The hardest part was judging when a nice wave was coming your way and that's where the instructor has your back. Quaid and Ryan were great! My 11 year old grandson and his friend from Seattle had four private lessons with Nicole and Quade in Loveladies on Long Beach Island. The boys loved it and became quite adept after the first lesson. They surfed steadily for 2 hours each afternoon and had over 50 waves per session. This is a class A outfit. Nicole loves what she is doing and her rapport with the kids was exceptional. This was my 10 year old daughter's first time surfing and they got her standing on the board almost immediately! I was so impressed with the one on one attention that she received from the instructors. Their ratio was one instructor to every 1-2 campers! The water was on the cold side, but they had wetsuits for the kids to borrow if they didn't have their own. They really thought of everything and it was a great experience. My 11 year old daughter took the 3 day lessons. She has never surfed before and isn't exactly the strongest swimmer. We were a bit hesitant to sign her up. The instructors were very friendly with her and patient. They got her doing things we never thought she was capable of. She left there feeling very confident about swimming and now loves to surf. This was a great surf lesson. Quade is a great instructor. My husband and I went for a group lesson. We already had some surfing experience. He paid attention to what we were doing on the board. So when we did something wrong or not good he pointed out the problem and gave us good instruction for what to do instead and how to improve. He answered all our questions very well. All around fantastic experience. It was my first time surfing and I spent majority of the waves caught standing and riding them in!
