My annual physical is more like catching up on my health with a good friend, rather than an interrogation. My labs are always thoroughly reviewed, and the actual examination is very thorough and professional. In the rare cases where there is a more serious issue to be evaluated, Dr. Li is always available for a thoughtful consultation. He sets a high standard for the practice and the entire team consistently exceeds that standard. A few years ago, following a late evening emergency appendectomy, Dr. Li made it a point the next morning to stop by my room at Rose Medical Center to check on me -- and he had not even been involved with the acute evaluation and procedure! The fact that there is a LabCorp location in the office, keeping me from waiting to get blood drawn elsewhere, is an extra added bonus. Despite a recent move to another state, my plan is to continue my relationship with this practice, even if it means paying for flights and hotels. It would take a lot for me to ever change doctors again.

I saw Tammy Swaggler (one of the PAs that work under Dr. Reese Jones years ago for Grave's disease…read more(hyperthyroid). She tried to force me to get a procedure I didn't want done. One treatment for Graves disease is to take a dose of radioactive iodine that will completely destroy your thyroid. You then have to take replacement hormone for the rest of your life. I told her I did not want to do this extreme procedure and that I did my research and found that it is fine to stay on the meds I was on long term. She withheld my prescription for those meds until I agreed to get a scan that would allow her to determine the correct dose of iodine to destroy my thyroid. I didn't know this was the reason for the scan until I arrived for the appointment. I did the scan anyway because she wouldn't give me my prescription until I went through with it. This scan was invasive and required that I swallow radioactive substances that were delivered to me in a lead container. It was completely unnecessary because I said I would not destroy my thyroid. I ended up going dangerously hyperthyroid shortly after this and ended up in the hospital. I was pretty young at the time so maybe she thought I was some idiot who couldn't make an informed decision about my health. After my mom found out how she was bullying me into this procedure and withholding my meds, she called and complained. After that Tammy sent me a letter in the mail (obviously covering her butt in case we sued) saying that she was giving me the prescription to hold me over long enough to find another doctor. I did find another doctor that respected my treatment decisions and allowed me to stay on my meds. I am now in remission and have a fully functioning thyroid no thanks to Tammy Swagler. I am glad I was smart and did not let her bully me into a permanent and extreme procedure for a disease that quite often goes into remission. I also saw Dr. Reese Jones once or twice and he was also very dismissive of my concerns and my questions.

I had heard very good things about this doc and he is listed in 5280 magazine. I had to request to ONLY see the doctor or they have you see a PA. Dr Rees Jones is very nice and says lots of reassuring things, but I don't think he is very proactive with treatment or care. My A1C never improved while working with him, my thyroid levels were always off, and I remained at my heaviest weight. Part of the problem is that he does not use technology for insulin pump or meter downloading. All blood sugar records have to be paper. He also does not encourage use of the CGM which has helped my sugars tremendously. He might be better for someone who is less serious about good health and about technology, but I was not impressed. The office staff is also consistently rude.

I could never imagine being kicked to the curb by my doctor after nearly 20 years of trust and…read morefaithfulness without a returned call MAKING ME FEEL INSIGNIFICANT, INCONSEQUENTIAL AND LOST -- even though I spent time to arrange for them to be "in network" with my insurance carrier. I have been a patient at Ponderosa Family Physicians for almost two decades, and for much of that time I was deeply grateful for the care I received. In 2016, Dr. Draper diagnosed my melanoma early enough that I was able to have it removed and become cancer free. For that, I will always be thankful. They also monitored my thyroid condition for over 10 years, and I placed significant trust in them with my ongoing health. When I changed insurance carriers and learned Ponderosa was no longer in-network, I personally contacted my insurance company and arranged to have them added so I could continue my care there. After receiving written approval, I brought the documentation directly to the office, believing that nearly two decades of loyalty and history would matter. Instead, I was sternly told I could no longer remain a patient. I asked to speak with the office manager, Steve Elliott, and was told he would call me. That was two weeks ago, and I have not received any follow-up. When I have called since, I'm told that because I am "no longer a patient," they cannot transfer my call or assist me in any way. After almost 20 years, the lack of communication and compassion has been deeply painful. It's unsettling to suddenly feel dismissed by a practice you trusted with your life. I now find myself searching for a new primary care physician -- someone who will see me as a person, not simply as an account status. I share this experience because long-term patients deserve TO BE TREATED LIKE AN INDIVIDUAL, A PERSON AND NOT A NUMBER with communication, respect, and basic follow-through. I sincerely hope others are treated with more consideration than I was.
