    Scallops
    Crystal C.

My sister and I made a reservation at 5pm on a December Saturday. We scored street parking right outside the restaurant and were the first patrons of the night. After a suggestion from my waitress, I decided to start with a Scarlett Macaw cocktail. I loved everything about it. If you like a sweet drink, this is the one for you. We were informed that the plates were all tapas and it was recommended that we order 4-7 plates. We had looked at the menu ahead of time online and already knew what main dishes we were interested in (the duck and the lobster popover). I went ahead and added on the scallops as well. I'm a seafood eater and my sister is not, so although these dishes are meant to be shared, we knew that we were basically ordering what we wanted for ourselves. That would have worked out just fine, except we didn't realize that the chefs cook the dishes at staggered pace, with only one coming out at a time. My scallops came out first and then the lobster popover. Both were delicious but it felt rude and strange to eat both my dishes before the duck, that my sister ordered, came out. Had we realized, we would have asked that everything just come out at once so we could both enjoy our food at the same time. All 3 dishes were scrumptious. Absolutely no complaints as far as the drink or food goes. We just wish the timing of the kitchen was a bit different.

Sur Lie has been on my list to try for a while and it certainly did not disappoint. The atmosphere is cosy, they sat my husband and I at a two top off to the side near the kitchen. Usually this tends to be a loud location but it certainly was not here. I have food allergies and the waitress had noted that and went through the menu of all the items I could have. She also stated they could make the tasting menu suitable to my allergies, we went with tasting menu and one wine pairing. They started with an outstanding beet salad and crudo. Delicious mussels, Pork Schnitzel, salmon and pork belly's were served and we finished with an amazing parsnip cake topped with carrot curry ice cream, turmeric walnuts, rum raisin, and caramel. The wine pairings were perfect for each dish. It was a lot of food and variety for a tasting.Highly recommend Sur Lie if you are in the mood for tapas.

Such a cute restaurant and the meal was served slowly and as each dish was ready. The food was amazing! Scallops were sold out which was a bummer but everything else was 10/10. I wish the popover had more lobster! Not pictured shrimp tostada was one of my favorite dishes

We had the tasting menu with pairing and it's something I recommend to everyone. Let them make the choices, they are good at this food and drink thing and have spent time thinking about it so let them steer the ship! The food is spectacular, everything - all courses start to finish was great, some courses were next level = Crudo, Mussels, Popover, cocktails. The Crudo makes the most memorable dishes ever list for me! Cocktails Blood Sweat and Tears was awesome - sweet, sour, spicy = goes down too easy! Service was top notch, (Meg) was perfectly attentive and professional, excellent service! A must try if in Portland, don't skip this place.

I made this reservation not realizing they change their menu daily and that even then, they might not have everything on the menu available. Had I realized that, I would have looked at the menu and more than likely wouldn't have gone. There weren't enough menu items that interested me. Fortunately, we had been to happy hour earlier and I wasn't too hungry. I can't remember the name of my cocktail but I know it had vodka, some kind of citrus, and something else. I did not like it at all. My husband thought it was okayish and drank it after he finished his Old Fashioned. Our server was friendly when she first approached us. After we ordered two smaller items (it's a tapas menu), she seemed quite a bit less friendly. We got the popover. It had some lobster in it (should have been more) and the sauce was good and there was a lot of bread. We also ordered the crab dip that was seriously la king in crab and all we really tasted was warm cream cheese. We each had about two bites and left the rest. I wouldn't go back. I would suggest looking at the menu the day you go to make sure there are things you may be interested in!

We stopped in for a "second dinner" around 7pm on a Thursday and were able to grab 2 seats at the bar. The bartender was awesome, I forget his name, but he was very personable and gave great recommendations on the menu. He also had 2 Pokemon cards (Snorlax and Machamp) behind the bar which I found very cute as I love Pokemon. The food is tapas style so it was perfect for sharing. We got the Wild Arugula Salad, Hanger Steak, Pasta, and the Crab Dip. The arugula salad was light and fresh and the chickpeas added crunch. The Hanger Steak was a great size for sharing - it was about 2 slices each. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and I enjoyed the little potato pave on the side. The pasta came in a shallow bowl and had a little broth which I was not expecting. Although I prefer my pasta on the savory side, the corn added sweetness which was not bad and there was some saltiness from the pancetta. The crab dip was yummy! This could have been shared between 4 people as the little bowl is deceiving in how much in contains! I enjoyed our dining experience in Sur Lie and would recommend it! It would be a cute place for a date night. The menu has a decent variety!

    Korean short ribs

Having had the good fortune of going to sister restaurant Gather, I was eager to try Sur Lie--and I was definitely not disappointed! This was an event with Dinnermates, and our group of 10 people had a multi-course prix fixe menu served family-style. Love that as a concept generally; being able to order plates to share is a great way to get a variety. Our first course was a burrata in a smoked butternut squash puree flavored with cumin, with these delicious crispy endive and parsnip chips on top, followed by a baked squash (not sure what kind) with both a sweet and salty bite. Both dishes did tilt more toward the sweet than the savory; not a criticism per se, as they were both beautifully layered with flavor and texture (I just prefer something more savory, or at least not two sweet dishes in a row). Next up (did I mention that each course was actually *two* courses?) were Korean short ribs that had been braised and simmering for hours to the point where they were just melting in our mouths. (I barely got a photo of this, we all scarfed it down so fast.) Then the pasta, which was my favorite: the perfect al dente bite--not actually something you get all the time, which is why I noticed and appreciated it--with different wild mushrooms, fried sage, and cheese. The best way I can describe the dessert is to say that it was a muffin (they called it a parsnip cake), which doesn't do it justice! It was something like both a cake and a muffin, soft on the inside and a bit crisp on top, with dollops of ice cream and caramel and fresh honeycomb. (And actually a lot less sweet than our first course, tbh.) Based on this, I can't wait to return and try more of the menu! Wonderful staff too; they described every dish well and made great wine recommendations. And just a lovely vibe overall--the restaurant feels both cozy and spacious, and I can easily see coming here for a dinner night with friends or just a few bites at the bar. Very clear why chef Krista Cole (of both Sue Lie and Gather) is on the short list for the James Beard awards, and I highly recommend!

The team of servers and bartenders were great. The were on the move the whole night. Offering up food, refiling drinks and passing around appetizers the whole night. All with a smile and recognizing you might not want to hold the toothpick and napkin the whole time and taking it from you before you realize you have been holding it for 10 minutes LOL The food was delicious, the views were lovely. Parking can get a little tight with the big crowds, especially in the summer. Always check ahead, or make reservations, as they do cater to a lot of private events. Secondly, I ordered the crab goat as my appetizer it came with two piece pieces that's it. Then the main entrée we picked was a piece of tenderloin with some kind of lobster. Something on top. Let me tell you it was like a pile of mush with a piece of potato underneath it. The meat was delicious. The lobster part was like mush and to me it had a fishy smell and taste. I don't like that my husband said well it's fish. Well I'm sorry but fish in a restaurant shouldn't really taste fishy or smell fishy. By now, we are ready to go home the preset desserts. We wanted to take home one we were told we couldn't even though we've taken home the same type of dessert before and never had a problem, but that's OK. The first thing we asked for we got him was bread. We normally have bread but not tonight because it's Valentine's Day and it's a preset meal. I explained to him that I am a diabetic, and my sugar was low. The waiter didn't seem to care and we still waited a good half an hour for our food to come. We asked to see the regular menu so that we may go back. Regular prices seemed reasonable for the area but to have a preset meal at $85 a person with stuff on there that we don't even eat and we didn't know about this meal when I made the reservation so we were kind of stuck on a Valentine's Day unless I wanted to eat in a fast food joint, which wasn't going to happen. I think if somebody is coming in there and they specifically ask you for something for a reason because they have a Medical need a piece of bread shouldn't be an issue. I don't know if I would come back here not for the price of the meal a cocktail plus tip. As a bonus, let me add this in our waiter said he only learned the menu 20 minutes before we walked in. He looked like a young kid and I said to my husband it was probably the best boy that they let me a waiter because he definitely did not seem like a seasoned employee.

Before I rip them a new one, let me be totally up front and say the service was very good. Like many places in the Portland area, they're short staffed, and the people who work there are doing the best they can. Friendly, like genuinely friendly and nice waitstaff. They're doing the best they can with too few people. So, to be clear if any management read this? Your staff is fantastic. The food? That's another story. They used to have things on the menu like roasted Brussels Sprouts with all kinds of delicious. There was a pot roast, cooked over three days, which melted in your mouth, with truffle oil and parsnips and carrots. The cocktails? WAY above par. Now you may as well go to Applebees. Over seasoned, boring, and generally NOT worth the money by a long shot. It just tastes like all the other places who use Sysco or Gordon foods. I had the burger, which was so average. I mean REMARKABLY average. Yes, the lettuce on it was actually not just boring iceberg, but that doesn't make up for serving someone a mass produced, firmly packed slab with way too much salt. It says it's some fancy farm beef, but it sure as heck didn't taste like it. The dish my wife had was similar. Some decent ingredients but for the most part it was literally no better than what you'd get in something in a mall. WAY too much salt, way too little flavor. I also ordered a Manhattan. In a Manhattan, the forward flavor should be the whiskey (rye or bourbon or whatever). All I could taste was vermouth. AND it was served in a highball glass with a massive ice cube, and it was warm. The ingredients should go in a cocktail shaker or mixing glass, with ice, then stirred for at least 15 seconds while stirring. It should be served in a cocktail glass like a coup or a martini glass which has been chilled. Mine was in a highball glass. Not sure what happened, but I'm sure profits had something to do with it. Our server described to us the specials for appetizers but never said anything about entree specials (maybe there weren't any?). We ordered the cloverleaf rolls, a cup of clam chowder, a cup of lobster bisque, and the maine mussels before our entrees. Both the clam chowder and the lobster bisque were just ok.. nothing special. The bisque was too sweet and had very little lobster. The mussels were the highlight of the meal. The sauce of cider, mustard and dill was very interesting and had deep flavor. The bread served with the mussels was also delicious. The cloverleaf rolls were great too, but perhaps a little too soggy/greasy from the butter at the bottom of the skillet. For our entrees we had the scallops and the halibut. The scallops were delicious- nicely seared and served with mushrooms and a green pea sauce which was bright and flavorful. The halibut however was not my favorite. The fish itself was cooked very well with a crispy skin, but it was swimming in brown butter and hazelnuts and lacked depth of flavor. It also seemed like an odd choice of flavors for a spring menu. It was served with potatoes that needed a bit more salt. We were too full for dessert and also didn't finish our meals. We sat around for a fairly long time not touching our meals without the server checking on us. Eventually we had to flag them down to get boxes and pay the check. While the ambiance was very nice, for the price and the reputation we expected more. Everything else we have eaten in Portland so far has been fantastic so it was a bit of a letdown.
