My friends gifted me a sushi cooking class with Sur la Table on a Saturday night. It was a really fun time. They call it Date Night but they should say Have fun with your friends either way two amazing teachers John and Jonas. We made chicken Yakatori skewers, a spicy salmon roll, and vegetable tempura. The class was lively, engaging, and because we like to cook, we threw curve ball questions to the teachers - they loved it and had a good laugh. The next table over were also having fun, and everyone bonded and the whole experience was amazing. Two thumbs up - beginner to intermediate - everyone will have a great time. Great night out! A fun and festive Christmas cooking class! My cousin gifted me a cooking class this past Christmas with Chef Julie, and we had such an amazing time! It was my first time ever being inside of a Sur La Table so I was very excited (and a lil nervous tbh). My cousin and arrived promptly at 4pm, and were seated with a couple and one other lady at our table. This was a complete surprise for me, so I had no idea what to expect! But I saw the cast iron on the table and knew we were in for a treat. We prepared: - A side arugula salad with butternut squash and pomegranates, dressed with a maple dijon vinagrette. - Prime rib - Potato latkes served with apple sauce and sour cream. - Sweet potato bars with a gingerbread crust over a pomegranate coulis. Everything was so delicious and filling! Chef Julie and her sous chefs were great. They prepared everything like a dance. And although there were a few timing hiccups (because making prime rib in 2.5 hours is tricky!), my cousin and I had the best time cooking, eating, and enjoying each other's company. After finishing up and having our dinner, we all went into the store to shop. I absolutely HAD TO get the ratcheting pepper and salt mills that we used during our class. They are so ergonomically friendly, and the sound they make is just so satisfying! Lol. Highly, highly recommend getting these for your own home, or for a gift next holiday season! Two visits down, many more to come! First class was a Greek cooking class, that was phenomenal! I have actually mastered one of the dishes (At least in my head) and proud of it. The second was a crepe class...still drooling to this day to be honest. It seems most classes have a standard set of dishes they do, which is about three, but then again I have only attended two classes so far, so it may vary for the class you attend. Either way, chefs are top notch and very patient with you whether advanced, intermediate, or beginner level, which is key for those who want to feel included. When it comes to price, very competitive and lower than many other cooking classes or schools in the area, so three cheers to them for that. Now of course, this kitchen also sits attached to its wonderful store, which was like a Disneyland experience for me. If they do not have what you are looking for, you don't need it! The staff are quite friendly and can assist if you are unsure how to use or if you are looking for an item and cannot find it. Price wise is the only downside as they tend to be a tad more expensive than your regular stores, but to be fair, its higher quality kitchen accessories or machines, so take your pick. All and all, a great place for shopping or adding to your cooking repertoire. read more

We showed up at 9am on a Saturday morning and were turned away, even though the manager said she knew several hours previously that they had a little water leak so all classes were canceled. She said we would get a refund plus $10 which I found a bit insulting... she should have let us know before we drove down there. I've been shopping here for eons - such a great store and even better that there are really smart (Heidi) people here to help you out - advise me how to use something or successes and failures they've had when cooking - I Love it!! I stopped in recently to grab some pans, a skillet, and some spatula's because mine look like holy hell - huh, yeah. I had a catering company many years ago in San Francisco and it was then that I learned that having the right tool can save me hours and help me get the presentation I want to portray when I prepare a dish. Most often I would sort of burn my hands because the double fork method or something else that I thought might work didn't. I like to see different heights - aka tallness on food, contrasting colors, depth of perception, and something people want to take a picture of before they eat it. Not just for Yelp mind you Lol - presentation is half of taste we always aid back in those creative days. Quite some time ago I took a class, at first I wasn't sure what to make of the other people, but then - the crew at Sur La Table helps create this easy going yet super fun experience. The timid people are comfortable and the over know it all people don't feel like they have to have all of the answers. My husband and I had decided to have a cooking class date night and we chose the Bold Tuscan Flavors class. We were seated with some amazing people! The energy that was at our table through the night made us leave the class with lots of positive emotions and great memories. Unfortunately the class was not as good as our table mates. The strip steak with chianti pan sauce was 1/5. The stake was completely cold by the time we had a chance to try it because we had a break right after cooking it and it was bland. It had no flavor at all which was a big disappointment. Potato gnocchi with basil pesto was 5/5. The best thing of the night. Had a super rich flavor and a nice texture, plus it was my first time trying it and now I want some more of it. Arugula salad with lemon-parmesan dressing 4/5. Nothing special but I liked it. Mint chocolate chip gelato 5/5. Yum! Super tasty. I was a little disappointed that the chef put all the gnocchi ( from both tables ) into one pot and cooked it, so you weren't sure if you were eating the ones you made. Our chef was a nice lady but she was wrong when she said avocado oil has low smoke point and couldn't be used as an alternative to canola oil. We even googled it to make sure and we were right. We didn't get a chance to make gelato even tho I was looking forward to it when I booked this class. They said it needs hours to get done in the freezer, which makes sense but still. They do offer a 10 percent discount on the entire store if you participate in one of their cooking classes, so that's a nice bonus. Their prices for the cooking classes are lower than any other classes around. The actual store with all the kitchen accessories is pretty expensive tho. Overall the people that were there definitely made this experience one of a kind which makes us want to try another cooking class. But you can't rate the actual cooking class based on people and the energy you were surrounded by. read more

I can confirm that cooking classes at Sur la Table are definitely hands on as I have taken many cooking classes over the years from here & have learned how to make tamales, Coq au Vin to Korean BBQ (Ok seriously, I already knew how to cook Korean BBQ along with many other Korean dishes since I'm half Korean & the only reason I took the class was to see what, if anything, this person could teach me that was any different. Let's just say I have mad skills & leave it at that! LOL) & so much more. The most recent class I took, Crêpes 3 Ways with Chef Julie was AWESOME!!!! I wasn't sure what to expect since it's been a few years since stepping foot into the Sur la Table's kitchen for a cooking class, plus crêpes can be tricky. I tried making them on my own about 10 years ago & let's just say they weren't all that pretty. Chef Julie had pre-prepped the standard crêpe batter but had us "home chefs" make the chocolate crêpe mix which had to sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or so (several hours to over night is best for crepe batter). We all took part in prepping the ingredients that were to be used in the 3 different crêpes from dicing the fruit & preparing the Marscarpone for Chocolate Crêpes with Berries & Marscarpone Cream, the goat cheese with dill for savory Crêpes Filled with Smoked Salmon, Goat Cheese & Fresh Dill, to sectioning oranges for a yummy Flambéed Crêpes with Carmalized Orange & Brandy Sauce (aka Crêpes Suzette). After the prepping everyone made crepes but here's where it got interesting. Most people would assume that you had to have a crêpe pan but not so. We had 3 hot plate stations and only 2 crêpe pans. The station I shared with my daughter & friend, well we used a small fry pan & quite honestly it was pretty easy to make it in that. We did take our turn using the crêpe pan which would definitely make it easier if you were going to try & flip it without any other utensils, as in just using the pan & flipping it in the air like my show off daughter did. We all got to taste our creations & were given all the recipes plus 10% off any purchase in the store that day. And you may think that you could just Google recipes & make them on your own, and you can, however, sometimes it's nice to have the chef there providing their secrets & tricks of the trade to make the recipe more interesting or easier. I love these classes & plan on attending another class Memorial Day weekend. And I'm contemplating on taking their macaron class. So would I recommend taking a class or two? My Wife and I had an awful experience at Sur La Table last Night ! It was a pretty quiet night with only 9 of us instead of the usual full class of 16 so there were 3 cooking stations totally open. We were paired with another Senior couple where the Man Let us know that he had come ti Sur La Table many times and knew what he was doing. Well he proceeded to just totally take over and would not even respond to my begging to not make the meal too spicy or I would not be able to eat it. This all took place while the chef/instructor was at are table listening. The chef specifically was watching and told him he should not cut more than1/3 of the Thai Chili Pepper, He just kept cutting and would not respond to her or me as I told him I would get sick if he used it all. The chef just walked away. I told the man if he put all the pepper in I was going to leave since I was hungry and not going to be able to eat. Again no response. The chef and everyone else heard what was going on and there was no attempt to help us or move us to another station. I took off my apron and told my wife to stay since she can eat spicy things. As I walked out the people working in the store asked what was happening and when I told them they said they were sorry but that was it ! A $200 dinner my wife and I were looking forward to experiencing was a total disaster! The staff did NOTHING TO Help ! This establishment prides its self as creating an experience! Well that is so far from the truth ! There were so many easy fixes to this and they just didn't Care ! If you go please make sure there are 4 of you in your group ! read more

We took 2 cooking lessons there. Both lessons were great but the reason for 2 stars is b/c of how they handled what seems to be a mistake. We showed up to the 2nd cooking lesson and for some reason, they had me down twice. So, instead of a group of 3, they had me repeated as 2 people, resulting in a group of 4. They (the team at the lesson) didn't know why so I called the customer service. First, it was hard to understand the person b/c he spoke with very thick accent and he was quite rude. Then I asked to speak to a manager and he said that the managers don't speak to a customer but that he could transfer me to a supervisor. Well, the supervisor was even more rude. She didn't give me a chance to speak and then went straight into 'this is what we can do, with take it or leave it attitude and tone.' Wow! We've taken 2 lessons there in 2 weeks and with this kind of customer service, I'd never go back there again! read more

The chief is nice and really knew how to wrangle in a group size of 16! We learned how to make empanadas , a corn salad , and then finally a steak sauce! This is my second cooking class experience here and I had a blast each time!! 5 Stars all the way! We got to cook in the fully equipped connected kitchen. We were supplied high quality ingredients and instruction. (Chef Julie Rocks!!) We, yes, we prepped and cooked a delicious delicious meal. I am not a great or even mediocre cook, but We did it and it was delicious. I had a blast, learned a lot, and walked away with a few new kitchen tools I realize I desperately needed. Attended a cooking class at Sur La Table in Santa Rosa. It was "Fresh Pasta three ways". We made spaghetti with Roasted Asparagus and shaved Parmesan, Fettuccine with Crab and Lemon cream sauce and Pappardelle with Peas and Mint. Everything was made from scratch including the noodles. I had made my own pasta 15 years ago but forgot how to do it. I learned some new things that I was doing wrong and would have helped me out in my younger days. The class was taught by Chef Kelly who was a great presenter and explained everything in an easy to follow manner. She had three assistants that helped with the behind the scenes work which keep everything flowing seamlessly. We learned how to make the noodles using the hand crank to flatten and cut the noodles as well as the electric pasta attachments for your mixer. Everything smelled wonderful and everyone was able to go hands-on with every stage of the process. It was a great class and I know that I will be back for more. There are so many classes that I can't do them all. All I can say was I had a lot of fun, learned some new things about cooking and received some great recipes. I took a Greek cooking class here last year and it was SO much fun! The class was limited to 16 people - everyone from kitchen novices to more seasoned chefs. I probably fall somewhere in the middle. I've taken all kinds of cooking classes over the years. Some good; some overpriced; some a complete waste of time. But what I like about Sur La Table was how hands-on we got to be. You're not just watching some teacher make the food and talk. You're actually rolling up your sleeves and doing it (which I think is the best way to learn). Our group of 16 was divided into small teams of 4. Each student was responsible for either chopping, sautéing, stirring, etc. The teachers made sure to come around and make sure we were doing everything right. The mood of the class can best be described as festive. People were laughing, mingling, and sipping wine while they cooked. Although they don't sell wine onsite, students can BYOB and share with their fellow chefs. And let's face it, cooking with wine (or doing anything with wine) always makes things more fun. When we were all done with cooking, the teachers took over to plate the food. While they did this, students could roam through the store and stock up on all their kitchen needs. There are lots of great appliances, gadgets, and cookbooks to choose from. I wound up buying a digital thermometer, a spatula, and some small gifts for my chef friends. After about 10 minutes, we all reconvened in the kitchen to enjoy the delicious fruits of our labor. When the evening is done, everyone goes home with the recipes + fond memories. To this day, I still impress my friends with the Lemon Chicken Souvlaki with Tzatziki Sauce I learned to make in class. It's always a winner. Wonderful experience learning various techniques with a delicious end result! Surprised my wife with a cooking class for her birthday during a weekend in Sonoma. Could not have had a better experience! We happened to be the only ones signed up for the class, but it was wonderful just the same! I imagine with more people the experience can only get more vibrant. We attended a Friday Date Night: Paris in Love lesson, which included: chicken with tarragon sauce, brown butter mashed potatoes, frisée salad with poached egg and bacon lardons, and vanilla bean creamer brûlée Chef Heidi and Michaela were extremely helpful, professional and made the experience fun and educational. We learned so much about flavor balance, tips for poaching eggs, the importance of emulsifying when making your own dressing and so much more! Coffee and water is provided as well as aprons and all the tools and ingredients you'd need. A station is set up for each participant and everyone gets to be involved in making each dish. (We were told normally you're in teams of 4 working together on each dish). We had so much fun and it turned out to be a wonderful start to this surprise birthday weekend! Best part: At the end of the class, you get to eat what you cooked up! The tasting portions were extremely generous. Suggestion: don't eat before and if you are still hungry, continue the night with a second late night snack elsewhere. But trust us, you won't be hungry! I recently bought a cast iron enamel skillet and was challenged by cleaning it. Heather was so good at understanding the problem and immediately referred me to Kate as that was her area of expertise. Both of them were patient and thorough in explaining the different ways to take care of the pan that I loved. Without their guidance, I would have been hesitant to use the pan again. I love this store. I have been a dedicated customer for almost fifteen years and just never have a bad experience. I am a home chef and I love nothing more than wandering through the wonder land that is cutlery and kitchen gadgets and wooden spoon displays of Sur La Table. Have you SEEN the spatula selection?? They also have a fantastic baking and clearance section. The staff is always super kind and knowledgeable. I have never had a bad interaction and when they are not sure of an answer or if something is carried they will generally take the time to find an answer or suggestion of another product. Even if you are not a huge home cook I think the wealth of knowledge available here is worth coming in every once and a while to see what's new and going on in the food community. Sigh :( The selection is vast , however , it was not as stocked as usual , Covid has slow / stopped production I imagine And it is apparent. The holiday stock is usually so alluring . I have gone nuts a few times regarding spending at this store . The copper pots are beautiful & they are well stocked in Le Creuset we have several items that I adore using . I was trying to use Rewards ,but this weekend is friends and family , 20 % non sale items . We have a wonderful Jura espresso machine that makes a righteous cappuccino. They have lots of great stock for java . The turkey theme line is really pretty & I might just go back for a few more items in that line . I have not taken a cooking class , we did sign up for the croissant class , did not make it , ha But the reviews are mostly positive, so I must give that a go . Montgomery Village has a retro vibe , and is full of charm . Several store fronts are empty , but many are still there and opened . Nice for strolling . Check it out ! read more

1/27/19 Went back for a second class. This time conducted by Julie. It was Paris Date Night. Night and day compared to my first class. It was informative, fun, well thought out. Everyone who was assisting were fun and very helpful. We made: Steak au pouvre with flamed cognac sauce Roasted potatoes with herbs Salad Verte with a vinaigrette . Chocolate soufflé with cream anglaise Everything turned out fantastic, no really, and the reduction sauce was beyond. I think the big tip off there was her use of cognac instead of brandy. It does make a difference. I would have used that sauce on the salad greens. Sooo good. I've made a number of reduction sauces over the years. Mostly with the same ingredients. And the trick between good and superb is using COLD, not room temperature butter. It could only have happened because of the attention paid by the instructor. She was a real pro at explaining not just what to do when, but why. It's one thing to know how to cook well, entirely different being able to explain. Her tips and tricks made the whole experience worthwhile. The 'tasting' portions at the end were ginormous. I had read, and was expecting, small tasting sizes so I made a late light lunch for me and my friend a couple hours prior. BIG MISTAKE, HUGE. And the wild range of experience among the students always amazes me. But she encouraged, explained, corrected. Kudos and thank you. / This review is specifically for the cooking class. I took my son (36 yrs old) to the Chinese cooking class tonight (Sunday 12/23). My first encounter just prior to class was with a woman by the name of Mccaila(sp?). She was immediately rude. This behavior continued throughout the lesson. Honey, I just spent $150 for two of us to take the 1 1/2 hour class. Your job is to clean up, wash dishes, and if you can't be nice or even professional, stay out of the way. She was bossing the other two employees, who were adorable, around the entire time. Because of her I'll not take another class until she's gone. I wasn't taking it so much for instruction, more for fun and she ruined even that. Yes, she's that obnoxious. YOU ARE IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY!!!! The chef was nice enough but basically you're just following a recipe, which both my son and I can do well enough on our own. The ingredients that are provide were very sub par. The green beans weren't even prepped, had black ends, some were broken with rotting black holes. The king pao chicken dish used some really bad all dark meat. How cheap can you get. There were no carrots, bamboo shoots - nothing 'extra' that usually goes with rounding this dish out. You're in 'teams' of 4 per prep station. So basically your watching as one person is mangling the food. Then each dish from each team is combined in one large serving plate so you don't even have the opportunity to taste your own food. There was minimal 'teaching' going on here. It's pretty much now dump this into the pan, now dump that into the pan. We were paired with two nice young men but they needed A LOT of instruction, none of which they got.
