Traveling as a…read moreceliac always requires a fair amount of planning, and I found Eugens while searching for gluten free options in Konstanz. While my initial contact with the waiter made me a bit nervous--he had clearly never heard of celiac--he did allow me to write down the German word for celiac on his notepad to show to the chef. The chef came out and reassured me that they were used to cooking for people with celiac, and that the dish I had ordered was indeed gluten free (all gluten free dishes are marked with "gf" on the menu, too). This was a nice gesture, as eating out as a celiac always involves a fair amount of worry. I ordered the gnocchi with cherry tomatoes, rucola, and parma ham. While I thought you could definitely tell the gnocchi themselves were gluten free--had a bit of a grainy feel/taste to them--the rest of the dish was so excellent and flavorful it more than made up for it. The service was also nice and friendly in other ways--since it was rather chilly, and we were sitting outside, a man (who I later recognize as Eugen himself from the website) brought us a couple of blankets and made sure we were comfortable. It's just a shame they don't open til the 1pm on Sundays--otherwise we would have been back the next day (I was already planning my lunch of a bunless burger with roasted potatoes!). Instead, it will have to wait for our next trip to the Bodensee!

I am very sad having to write this review! I was an undergrad at Konstanz University in 1983 and…read morethe Wessenberg had just opened. Me and my peers were mesmerized by their style and their offerings spending most of our Bafög there. When most watering holes in Konstanz were happy to serve Export beer in 0.5 liter bottles, the Wessenberg offered a stylish experience with hip music and a hip waitstaff in elegant aprons (they also had probably the first true Italian espresso Machine outside the esteemed Dolomiti icecream parlor on Marktstätte). Along with the Tanzschiff and the soon-to-open Rheinterrasse Cafe this was one of the most hip places in town. Fast forward to 2013: A sad bunch of near 50 year old Birkenstock wearing dudes hanging out on a Friday afternoon. It seems the customers aged with the place. Nonetheless, for old times sake, we sat down in their nice courtyard and optimistically ordered salads and drinks. Big mistake to order the Salad with Zander Knusperle! What could have been a very happy Konstanz experience turned out to be a sad breaded fried (probably Tilapia) fish nuggets from the bag on aged big leaf lettuce in bottle dressing nightmare. The Wife peeled the thick breading layer from the microscopic white fish pieces in a vain attempt to find some healthy protein in this mess. Big married life drama!! An unhappy 'where is the f$%&^*g fish' discussion ensued. The entire evening started on a severely imperiled footing because of this...only a couple of Spätburgunder 'Viertele's finally alleviated the impending doom. For old times sake, I really hope someone realizes the wrong path this place is on right now and kicks it back into the present hipster universe! Back into the Future my dear Wessenbergniks! Try leading again! Or you will be done!

PROS: 1) Large selection of Bavarian biers on tap: more than I cared to count or remember! 2) Prices are cheap: 3 Euros for 500 mL, 6 Euros for 1 L. 3) Outdoor seating right on the water! 4) Free wi-fi! CONS: 1) Absent & unhelpful service: I ordered a bretzel that unfortunately never came. Our waitress didn't charge us for it either, but I saw her write it down with the rest of our order? Apparently they also have an English menu that she failed to tell us about. 2) Weird menu hours: It's true we were here at a strange dining time of 3:30pm (the lull between lunch and dinner). However, they had a very limited menu for this time of the day, and the snack stand at the biergarten also stopped serving food! I really wished our waitress could have come through with that bretzel... Overall, I blame the cons on my inability to speak German, and I wouldn't mind coming back to enjoy more biers and that lovely view of the lake & dock!

I read their "Spring Specials" Board and saw the Karotten Suppe and decided to sit for a spell and enjoy a bowl of one of my favorite soups. As the name suggests, Zoup - they sorta specialize in soups I suppose, (as well as other things I'm sure) with seasonal offerings/variations. I initially wanted carrot and ginger but I opted for the carrot-mango-orange variant. What's cool is that they offered to add some fresh ginger in as well. Win! Win!! In addition to my soup, I also ordered a Panache which is just a beer with a lime soda topper that's pretty refreshing. The staff was very courteous and helpful as well as linguistically patient with me as we both tried to communicate with one another. The ambiance is traditional Cafe European with a nice airy seating area to people watch without feeling like people are on top of you. So, if you are in Zurich and a soup person then this is the place for you.
