When we heard here of the prevalence of the "Chip and PIN" system here, we were super worried and braved awful ATM fees to withdraw cash down the way. Per Chase/British Airways: "Further, customers in the United States traveling outside the U.S. are not required to obtain a PIN. Merchants in Europe (or other countries) are required to: - Accept all cards with magnetic stripe - Honor all cards bearing the Visa/ MasterCard brand mark if they accept MasterCard - Accept magnetic stripe as well as chip cards, even in markets that are evolving to 100% chip card local issuance You should urge the merchant to insert the card into the terminal and follow the prompts. The terminal will automatically request a signature. If the merchant insists on not accepting the card, please call us at the number listed on the back of your card, to report the merchant name and address. " The folks at the store were very nice and may have been scared by various tactics used at the outset of Chip-and-PIN stuff (see the Wikipedia article) into refusing our card, but apparently it's a legal no-no, and we'd like to prevent other visitors from having to go through the rigamarole that we did.

So all meat is from Irish farms and I believe the quality of Irish meat is always excellent. The fillet steak is 32 day dry aged. Most steak in the USA is wet aged which is cheaper and produces an inferior product. For frozen it's their Greenland cold water prawns. They are again wonderful quality and taste. The last day I was there they were selling snow peas at 49 cents a bag and 500gm of red grapes at €1.29. Wonderful value for great produce and they often have real deals on fresh veg. So I bought a half dozen of each. The new normal is that you may have to stand outside a while as numbers are now limited. This is ok in an Irish summer (which this year is lousy). They provide hand sanitizer on entry. The only other downside is that they don't have many check out staff so again you can queue there a while too but it's the rub of the green here as the prices are so competitive.

She wouldn't look at my photo, instead she asked me to show her the items that were incorrect. I pointed to them (even though they were very visible in the trolley) She then asked me what aisle they were on, I said I took a photo, this was ignored and she said a price check would have to be done. Off she went, 10mins later she returned and said she wasn't adjusting the price as the reduction had expired?! I, as a customer is supposed to know this how? I told her that was ridiculous as the shelf was clearly marked as a rollback price but she was very adamant with me that she was not going to adjust the price, it had expired and she was unable to override it. Well I know for a fact this is nonsense as I purchase these products on a regular basis and they have never been marked down correctly. Strangely the staff during the day just say "Oh those still are not scanning properly, I will adjust them" This member of staff was not obliging whatsoever, she claimed management would not allow this and the best she can do is reduce one of the items, rest would be charged at the higher price! Considering they are still 50p more expensive each than in Tescos, I told her that I wasn't accepting the reduction in just one so she lifted the items from my trolley and confiscated them! Wow! Unbelievably poor customer service! The joke was her outfit said 'Happy to help' Asda take these people off your customer facing roles! Very, very off putting! Stock levels in store were shockingly bad too!

I'd read that this store was burnt out in this town a few months ago, so the folks in charge of the company right now have opened another store beside the charcoal shell. The supermarket chain, which is worth around seven billion pounds, is being bought and sold by big players in the market with TDR Capital LLP buying the shares owned by billionaire Moshin Issa last month. Moshin left his wife for an employee of EY Manchester. This fractured the relationship with his brother Issa. While it's bright and spacious I assume it's a temporary fix as it's like a giant hard canvas and steel structure, and fair play to them for providing a service to their customers. I called in to buy carrots as the preferred snack for a fussy Bichon Frieze and a dizzy mini dachshund. The carrots were 65 pence a kilo, the same price of M&S. I also got a few packs of seedless red grapes (99 pence for 375gm) from Egypt and 2 cartons of four Spanish nectarines again 99 pence a carton. The in-store staff are real mega friendly and undoubtedly mostly minimum wage to support the lifestyles of billionaires.

The shop itself is well staffed and the staff are always polite helpful and will go out of their way to assist. The store is often busy due to its reasonable prices and location therefore i would recommend you shop in the evening or during the week to avoid the weekend rush. The store is well laid out, always stocked and prices are always clearly marked. This asda is definitely the grocery hub of Downpatrick. There is more than ample car-parking in the area although at the weekend spaces can be limited.
