The tea drinker among us got a big pot of tea and fresh milk in a little pot. He can't stand the smell or taste of coffee. We got two brown sub sandwiches - one with chicken - which I avoided and one cheese and ham. Both were a good portion size of fresh, soft, seeded brown bread. The ham and cheese were good quality and thankfully not the cheapest rubbish that's all too common these days. We got two portions of delicious, proper, apple pie and cream. This bugs me as every sit - in cafe selling drinks and food should have a toilet or have one nearby as you'd find in a shopping mall. So a week or so ago, knowing our plight, two of our friends arrived at our door with two cappuccinos from this female owned business and stood well back from our front door (other friends sent us flowers). The lady owner of this place has maintained food and coffee service six days a week (not Sunday) all over lockdown from a serving hatch. Fair play to her. I wasn't going to do a review just on two cappuccinos even though they were very good cappuccinos. I'd gone to this business a few times over the years but it was long ago. Today changed the dynamic when our friends arrived once more with two cappuccinos and two sausage rolls and stood well back. Now I'm fussy about sausage rolls and I'm conscious that those with less scruples know they can get away with very cheap, fatty 'meat' and cheap fat laden anaemic looking barely cooked pastry. If you are local and you want to try cheap to make (but not cheap to buy) industrially made sausage rolls go to the Shelbourne bakery. So back to this place. I was sceptical about the sausage rolls and my scepticism was totally misplaced. They were delicious. The sausage meat did not taste at all cheap or fatty. We heated them and the aroma was lovely. The spice kick was about right - really good taste - and the best surprise of all our friends said that the owner makes them herself and together with minced pork she had added chorizo, goats cheese and jalapeño. This is what happens when a business concentrates on quality first on what they are making to sell, rather than simply being only interested in maximising profit regardless by making food as cheap as possible while staying legal. The sausage roll pastry too was delicious. It was light, golden. flavoursome and moreish. So we've become instant fans. The owner usually has a blackboard out front with a joke or an acerbic comment and she sure has a healthy, cheeky sense of humour - her observation style is more akin to how Chrissy Teigen recently expressed the (thankfully ex) President Trump years rather than Plato. Like so many places now customer numbers are limited and social distancing is imposed. There's a one way system around the store as it has narrow lanes, and if you go against it, and some did today, staff are very quick to chastise. That's how I observed them come across, officious rather than polite but I must always be polite to these front line workers as they are minimum wage and their parent company isn't generous to them despite having a near £800 million operating income in 2016 (the last date of published figures.) My wife wanted to buy some of their own brand cleaning products as apparently they are very effective. So I bought junk food, savoury stuff like crisps and nuts. I followed my wife into the store as I first went to the local bakery next door to pick up a takeaway cappuccino. They had the check out tills well organised with a staff member dedicated to directing customers as check-outs freed up so we didn't have to queue too long to pay and go.

The great thing is they usually have free samples which is a great way to try before you buy. The butchers does really great meat and they have a handy little deli counter. This branch is really spacious and everything is easy to find. They offer the superscan option, where you scan your own products as you shop and then just bring the receipt to the counter and pay. And they have recently introduced self scan check outs. The shop is usually pretty packed and queues are really long, but this can be avoided by using the self scan check outs. If you have the money to spare, or want to get some quality food and do not mind spending that bit extra, at least check out the bakery section
