The tea drinker among us got a big pot of tea and fresh milk in a little pot. He can't stand the smell or taste of coffee. We got two brown sub sandwiches - one with chicken - which I avoided and one cheese and ham. Both were a good portion size of fresh, soft, seeded brown bread. The ham and cheese were good quality and thankfully not the cheapest rubbish that's all too common these days. We got two portions of delicious, proper, apple pie and cream. The staff were friendly and very attentive to us. Now to the annoyances - there's no toilet. This bugs me as every sit - in cafe selling drinks and food should have a toilet or have one nearby as you'd find in a shopping mall. The filled rolls weren't filled to the end again this shouldn't ever happen as it mars enjoyment but is easily remedied. Lastly the lush apple pie had soggy bottoms. Euch. Again this mars enjoyment. Each generous platter was £21 so £42. I asked for a mix of cheese, chicken and ham with sauces and salads and proper seasoned. I also asked for a small amount of my favourite sandwich - egg & onion - heavy on the onion and properly seasoned. I'm the only E&O eater and I've been known to add cold water Greenland or Iceland prawns. It was very kind of the charming staff to prepare them given they were close enough to closing. I went for a walk. I bumped into an old friend that I hadn't seen in a few years - we talked rubbish, we complimented each other on still being alive just as boring old pharts do. Our guests indulged in all sorts of good food and the sandwiches we declared a real treat. The apple pies were home - made so they couldn't be bettered and served with clotted Cornish cream. Like so many places now customer numbers are limited and social distancing is imposed. There's a one way system around the store as it has narrow lanes, and if you go against it, and some did today, staff are very quick to chastise. That's how I observed them come across, officious rather than polite but I must always be polite to these front line workers as they are minimum wage and their parent company isn't generous to them despite having a near £800 million operating income in 2016 (the last date of published figures.) My wife wanted to buy some of their own brand cleaning products as apparently they are very effective. So I bought junk food, savoury stuff like crisps and nuts. I followed my wife into the store as I first went to the local bakery next door to pick up a takeaway cappuccino. They had the check out tills well organised with a staff member dedicated to directing customers as check-outs freed up so we didn't have to queue too long to pay and go.

It is however a five minute drive from the Crowne Plaza hotel and that is the connection that brought me to this coffee place. I think there's a Paypal business close by too. Anyway, I had to meet someone a second time and we had chosen the Crowne Plaza as a location on both occasions. But I had a problem returning here as the first time it was nigh on impossible to find a seat in the lobby, parking was difficult and worse still their coffee was pretty darn poor. I find it hard to tolerate lousy coffee when the price is set should £2. So when we met the second time there wasn't an available seat so I proposed we go to this Costa. We were there in under 10 minutes. Lots of easy parking too. It had a fair crowd inside. I was a bit surprised given its out of the way location. I'd imagine that very few would go there on foot. There's also a SuperValu supermarket in this place. We sat just inside the door with the heat of the sun through the huge front glass window giving me a false sense of springtime. I opted for a flat white which was a darn good portion and fairly tasty too. I did by pay so I don't know the cost. I didn't note any sign that they pay above minimum wage and I don't know anything about any employee benefits.
