Way before Northgate market was around, this was our go to store for Mexican items and produce for many years. Traveling to Chitty Heights was necessary. Compared to Vons and Ralphs, much more value here unless you're buying gringo foods. Ha! Why would you come here for that? It's true though, somewhat. Since they are a smaller market, overall selection is somewhat limited. So they focus on the specialty stuff. The meat counter has a solid selection of all cuts, cheeses and creams. We've been impressed with the marinated pollo asado, and the adobada is seasoned well too. They offer some great prices on stuff even though they're a small scale store. We still come here for particular things that are better, we love the small bolillo rolls and tortillas. The pastries and pan dulce are above norm too. Now another thing we like is the hot food, such as carnitas, beans, rice. I think it's around $15 that would feed at least 4 hungry mouths. I've tried the pork ribs too- tasty flavor but on the salty side. Overall a very good market with reasonable prices across the board. Fruits and veggies normally less here but can be less than fresh so take a good look. Parking consists of a smaller lot behind that's always full, so that can be frustrating. I live near by and shop here on occasion. I like the fruit they sale. Though at you have to pick through some of it find good fruit. I don't think it is the freshest of fruit. I have noted their prices seem to be a bit higher than other super markets especially on non-ethic products. I mostly go for the delicious Mexican pastries they offer. The staff has been friendly and helpful. I go there for the convenience and for their pastries. I do most of my shopping at a larger supermarket. read more

Murphy's was my go to store to get Mexican items however every single time I am there the employees always have a bad attitude not only me but also towards other people. THEY ARE NOT EVEN FOLLOWING THE COVID-19 GUIDELINES. I got into an argument with a lady because she wasn't keeping her 6 feet distance and telling her the reason for the tape on the floor so we can keep our distance. The cashier just continued to ring up my items and did nothing. No one there was enforcing anything and everyone was so close together. Murphy's Mexican supermarket has a lot of things going for it: 1. Plenty of fresh and cheap produce. 2. Great selection of Mexican drinks in the cooler like horchata, jamaica, tamarind juice, and more. 3. Murphy's is a whole lot bigger than the two other small Hispanic corner store grocery shops across the street in different directions; in fact, it's pretty much the biggest and bestest Mexican supermarket in San Diego! This Mexican store looks bigger than it really is. Its kinda small inside and a bit cramped but the produce selection is decent and the prices are cheap. They have a good meat selection and they even have pre-marinated meats for your bbq needs. Salsa also. Tiny parking lot in the back so youre almost guaranteed to not get a spot. Street parking buddy. What's not to like about SuperMercado Murphy's? The name captures it pretty well. It's a Mexican grocery/convenience store posing as a full sized Von's. I usually go to the location at Fairmount and Dwight, but it's just as crowded with merchandize and shoppers as the original location. Murphy's is not a one-stop shop by any means, but what they do, they do well. Yes, it's a little ghetto, but who cares when you can get good produce for cheap. Located on the corner of University and 46th st is Supermercado Murphy's, a small neighborhood grocery store offering most of the essentials. The 1st thing you notice is the absence of a parking lot, you'll have to turn down 46th or the alley to access the small (maybe 10 spaces) parking lot behind the store. Also in that alley are $.25 water machines. There is limited street parking in front, but you have to be ruthless to parallel park here when University has traffic. Inside you'll find fresh produce, a butchers counter with a good selection of meats and seafood, and also a restaurant serving hot fresh Mexican food. I've only seen 2 checkout counters open at a time but the lines are never long and they move fast thanks to fast working cashiers. My son and I come in the mornings for fresh baked bollitos, usually 4 for $1. In the aisles you'll find a small selection of everyday items. Some of them carry higher prices than big chain supermarkets ($4 for peanut butter for example). This is a good place to pick up beer, meat and fresh made (the same day and still warm) corn tortillas for a bbq or cookout. I don't do my everyday shopping here, as some items are a lot cheaper at other places, but I do come enough to recommend it for certain things already mentioned. read more

Ok so Murphy's, a Mexican run but not Mexican owned super. The produce is ample and fresh and at a great price when you compare it to Albertson's. The seasoned/ marinated meat is not fresh, who really considers meat that has been pickled and is brown fresh. Meat is seasoned in such a way to dispose of rotting meat and not even at a discount. It is also hard for me to believe that the meat men or carniceros can not speak english. There is a deliberate attempt to keep the American out. Since I AM the Duchess I will do the honors and write a review for Supermercado Murphy's. It's a local Mexican grocery shop in City Heights, let's get that info out of the way. This is where I come for fresh produce period. Would I want to spend $2-3 on broccoli I'd travel a little further down the street to Albertson's, but why would I when Murphy's only charges a few quarters? I'm a frugal and smart shopper. This is where Murphy's is highly convenient for me. Oranges, pears, green peas, corn, mushrooms, the basics. Do I find everything I need for a recipe I'm putting together? At times, no. For example; Italian parsley. You wouldn't be able to find it, because well, it's 'Italian parsley'. I knocked it down to 4 stars, because, well I tried the beef stew meat for the first time, and didn't like the chewiness and the texture, suppose it's low grade meat. But the chicken bits I use that's labeled pollo de tacos, I like, I make it with vegetables and some sauce at only a few bucks sometimes less, it's a good deal, and chicken is chicken. I have no complaints except for this last time, I saw a lot of fatty chicken chunks, and I normally don't see that. The only thing people can really gripe about this little Mexican grocery outlet, is the higher set prices on the 'American-brands' such as cereal, and well cereal, and other American-products. But I understand why; if the local typical Mexican housewife doesn't want to venture a few blocks down the street to an Albertson's for a slighter cheaper price on cereal for her kids, she doesn't have to, Supermercado Murphy's has her cereal! Can't believe no one has reviewed this yet. This place is like heaven. i've gotten avocados 3 for $1 on more than one occasion. Mangos too. The produce is fresh and cheap. The meat is the same. Some of the best pollo asado I have had from any carniceria in SD and def the best adobado. Carne asada is so-so. My only real complaint is that the fish is often frozen still, so I can't take it for tacos right away. They make fresh tortillas, salsa, ceviches, and serve food as well. This place is so tight and centrally located. It's in my dad's neighborhood, but I drive here just to shop because it is that good. Well worth the visit. read more

Nothing particularly negative to say about Murphy's. The food is good, the place is clean and the prices are decent. This was my corner liquor store back in the day now they've expanded their original tiny store and then made another bigger store a few minutes down the road. I've been a lifelong customer, mostly because of the convenience. Parking isn't the easiest. I'm from the hood so the people don't phase me but expect a lot wannabes and ghetto people. Anyway if you're looking to shop at a chill Mexican supermarket this is one of many legit ones out there. If you're ever in the hood drop by.
