Make the choice to invest in the community and shop here. Far too many hometown stores can't compete with large chains. You can't replace knowledge from a store like this, where the service is just as important as the products on the shelves. So, here's a song for everyone - from David Wilcox about my old hometown hardware store that is no longer: An angel appeared in a holy vision Stood by my bedside in shivering light Spoke my name, told me my mission I could not believe I was hearing him right 'Cause he said, "Go, my son, go, always go to East Asheville Hardware before you go to Lowe's", he said "Go to East Asheville Hardware before you go to Lowe's" "You'll help to keep them open, I'm worried they might close From the stiff competition from the National Conglomerate With the full page ad in the color section of the Sunday paper supplement And stacks of plastic swimming pools and seven brands of power tools And rows and rows of registers, all having nice days" "But no, you go", he said to me with light around his face He said, "You go first to that age-old place To that old wooden door that you have to close behind you To the wide-board wooden floor, worn down soft" "To the real thing, a good advice, quality at the fair price And know that they know how deep the frost goes here I'm sure there's stuff you'll have to find at Paty's, Lowe's or Sears" "But go to East Asheville Hardware Go to East Asheville Hardware before it disappears"

The owner and his staff go out of the way to buy the most unusual items. If I need a birthday gift for someone, I come here. I purchased a hand blown glass bird feeder for a friend. The price was not outrageous, as I am cheap, and my girlfriend LOVED it. If you need birdseed, at 69 cents a pound, buying it loose, you can't beat this place either. Of course they have the usual items, but you can even haggle a little sometimes and get a REAL bargain. Last year I got a beautiful bush for 1/3 off, just by asking if they had ANY specials at the end of the year. The woman in the gardening department actually said, I could let this one go a little cheaper as long as I know it is going to a good home. She feels about her plants the way I do! And lastly, in the country, you have to deal with mice. It is a necessary evil of the joy of the mountains. I was directed to a device that kills the mice by one of the ladies inside. They're mice, so killing them is fine with me as long as I don't see their feces on my counter top and in my food anymore. She even knew what she was talking about with that. In one week, my mouse problem has been solved. I was able to catch one mouse a day, and now I live rodent free. Thanks AGWAY for knowing your stuff!!!!

They're also great about referring customers to other local businesses if they don't have something I'm looking for. A recent example was I was looking for a hori-hori (google it, it will change your life). They had some tools that looked similar and probably could've sort of done the trick -- but someone working there told me where I could find an actual one on Main Street. Found it, bought it -- and told the folks working there how I learned about them. Builds community and relationship as opposed to competition. Dig it. These folks are my go to -- highly recommend them.
