Super Pollo was just OK. It's better than a lot of the Peruvian chicken places I've been to, which just sell flavorless chicken with a ho-hum green sauce and a menu full of random soggy or overcooked carbohydrates. The menu is quite varied, and they also offer an array of sides, subs and -- Pakistani food?! Here's where things get weird. The website made no mention of the kabobs and karachi dishes available at Super Pollo. But not being a huge fan of rotisserie chicken, I was pleasantly surprised at this discovery and decided to call an audible last-minute and go with the boneless lamb karachi. Except, none of the workers knew any English other than "chicken." Like NOTHING. I kept trying to order a #11, the lamb karachi. They just kept looking at me and saying, "Chicken? Chicken?" Finally I said, "Uh, you only have chicken karachi today maybe? Chicken is fine." Then they walk me over to a buffet of premade food sitting in hot water and point to a sketchy looking chicken dish. It looked nothing like the picture of karachi on the menu. Finally, I gave in and said, "Sure." (After trying to get them to understand the words "eleven," "lamb" and a myriad of other things.) The menu states exactly what the karachi comes with, but instead they told me I had to pick two sides from a grouping of things on the buffet line. Mmmkay. So I did. Overall, the dish did turn out to taste like it was chicken karachi. It was OK, a little more watery than it should be, but spicy enough. The chicken was on the bone, which isn't my favorite thing in the world. But despite picking through the meaty bits to pull out small bones so I didn't choke and die, it was enjoyable. It also came with a piece of naan, which was a little burnt and not the best I've had. It was really dry and didn't have any kind of butter or other flavoring on it. Also, I would not recommend you come here if you have food allergies because you can't really ask them about ingredients. One of my friends is dairy-free and tried asking if they used butter in a certain dish. Unfortunately, none of us remembered the Spanish word for butter, so we were unsure which dishes were safe for our friend. This place is like most of the shady Peruvian chicken joints in the Arlington area. Some people swear by them, but I just shrug not really seeing the appeal and go along with it. read more

Unfortunately my go-to spot for Peruvian chicken is no longer what it once was. I once stopped here a couple times a month but the quality, service and portions have taken a nosedive while the prices have increased. I don't mind the inflation prices but do expect the same quality with the increased price, not the opposite. Orders are also somehow constantly incorrect with missing sauce or other random issues. I gave them a pass on issues for a couple months but seems like it goes downhill even more with each visit. I suggest you skip super pollo and head over to crisp and juicy. read more

Chicken was good. I wasn't WOWed by it though. Sides were just OK. Yuccas were the best sides. Chicken fried rice was salty and a bit dry. The spinach like others have said were definitely not warm enough, even if it was good, the temperature made me really turned off by it. Since they have the sides shown right in front of you, I got a look at the others and I wasn't really appetized by the looks (like corn soaking in water for probably hours). Go for the chicken, pick Yuccas and whatever else looks freshest that day. =) read more

All the Super Pollos are awesome but this is awesome in a whole new special way :) the place is halal (whoo hoo!) so its super awesome to have halal peruvian chicken- just such a treat! a total mix of latin america and south asia-- and the best of both! its menu is a mix of desi/ indian/ pakistani kabobs and latin american food-- which gives you awesome sides like daal and channa (chickpeas). But my absolute favorite thing here: the carne asada and white rice. Yep, i know its crazy, carne asada and super pollo? but really if you go there and order it, you will totally get it. I dont know what they marinate it in, but its amazing. and i dont know how they make that white rice but its just so so SO tasty! read more

However, I think the quincy location is a little better than this one (hence the four stars). -chicken is just as good -spinach was more watery, not as good -yuca was less crispy, could be that it was sitting for a while -green sauce a little spicier -yellow sauce better This location also serves kabobs? Our family lives near here and it is absolutely out favorite fun fast food place. The employees are always very nice, and it's just such a convenient, fast way to get good food. They have some of the best deals on whole, freshly roasted Peruvian Chicken that can feed the whole family. They also have delicious sides like fried Yuca (a must have!), vegetables, and an iconic seasoned spinach dish that we have tried countless times to re-create at home! We appreciate the staple sauces (a creamy dip & a fresh jalapeño purée) that are provided to accompany the chicken and yuca. I also recommend getting some sweet, fried plantains or 'platanos' for dessert! read more

This place used to my go to spot for Peruvian chicken until last weekend. The chicken was flavorless and dry. The fried rice used to be delicious with hints of ginger and soy sauce now it's a weird steamed al dente rice with tons of cumin. Don't know if it's under new management or a new chef but the food is just not like before. Very disappointed. read more

Super Pollo is one of my favorite quick eats. I love their chicken, plantains, yucca, everything. BUT, I'm giving it a four star because I've realized as of recently they've gotten stingy with some things... Anytime you want more than two sauces of each, they charge you extra (and trust me, two is not enough for a half chicken). Also, I noticed tonight that they half-filled ALL of the sauces which bothered me. Occasionally, I will also see the price of the same meal fluctuate at checkout, I don't cause a fuss but it's something to watch. Watch that receipt closely and carefully! I've figured out by now that their plan at the cash register is to always charge you more than the menu price, by automatically jacking up to their total "for white meat" even if you aren't asked about it, or ask for it. You might also get a credit card surcharge, which is a violation of payment terms for merchants and could get them into trouble. The simple solution to all of this, is simply to drive a few blocks east to El Pollo Rico: better in every sense, from food quality to pricing to honesty. read more

Great place for Peruvian chicken! I love their sides and their portions are huge. Their green sauce is so amazing and I love the yellow sauce too! Their parking is not great and it gets packed during prime time! I wish their tables were cleaner and their bathrooms as well. I was driving down Wilson 90 minutes before the start of the Carnivore Crew's Eat Mor Chikin event and out of the corner of my eye I saw the most pecular thing - a Super Pollo restaurant. This can't be, I thought to myself. The signage looked eerily similar down to the font, the wording and the two graphics of the chickens over fire. When did Super Pollo move?! With the event a mere hour and a half away, I drove a mile down to the original, barn-like Super Pollo on N. Randolph. I was relieved to find that it was still there. An hour later, Karman L. came to pick me up so she could get cheap gas down by the Texaco on Wilson so I asked that she take me to the new Super Pollo to see what was going on. I burst through the doors to be greeted by the sweet scent of that Peruvian chicken I know so well. It was the same menu with the same prices. I spoke to the nice man behind the counter who said that yes it was the same restaurant and both locations were going to stay open. This location is smaller but cleaner and newer. It is in a strip mall so parking may be more difficult than the N. Randolph location which has its own lot. It also isn't as metro-accessible as the original. I was just surprised that they opened another location less than a mile from the original. Is Super Pollo slated to be the Starbucks of Peruvian Chicken? Super Pollo is one of the best cheap eats in the area. Super Pollo gets the job done for that peruvian chicken craving if you are in the Ballston area. You can smell this place a block away. Highlights: - Get the 1/2 Dark Chicken special if available. Great deal and less than $10 total. - They fried up fresh Yuca for me when they were low which is nice. - They have an extensive menu if you don't want to eat peruvian chicken so there is a lot to choose from. - Large, large portions. Get a 1/2 chicken for lunch and save the other 1/4 for dinner. - The workers were okay but could be friendlier to the customers. It was more like a business transaction. - They have to improve their sides. Other places like Super Chicken in Tyson's have better sides. They also look like they have been there for a while. - Plenty of seating but this place definitely gets busy during lunch. - Parking is limited. I usually have to find parking on the street. Note don't illegel park because Arlington notorious towing compnay "Advanced Towing" is right next door. I've never been a huge fan of Peruvian chicken. A visit a while back to the El Pollo Rico left me finding the chicken oily and flavorless. The chicken here is rubbed with a potent flavorful mix. You find the remnants of the rub under the skin and inside the chicken. Not sure exactly what it is -- it is salty, vinegary and slightly garlicky. After several visits, I finally looked behind the counter at the oven. They use charcoal, not gas or electricity. My favorite combo is half or quarter chicken with spinach and chick peas. It is a tasty solid nutritious meal at a reasonable price. The menu is very narrow. Better to do a few things well than do many not so well. The only other meat they grill is fish. One time I had the pescado -- regular item?-- and another time salmon -- special item. The salmon was OK. The pescado was a beautiful plate of fried fish but tasted muddy. I don't know the species. A quick wiki search shows that it is an Andalusian Jewish specialty. One might have to be Andean to appreciate it. read more

My significant other has lived in Arlington a lot longer than I (since 1984, while I arrived last year), and she swore by El Pollo Rico. Before meeting her, I had really enjoyed The Chicken Place, but switched to El Pollo Rico not because I thought it was all that much better, but because, well, that's what guys do. I sort of kept the fact that I didn't quite "get" the joy others found in El Pollo Rico's overly-brined, almost soggy tasting, chicken and limited, weak sides. After reading some of the reviews here, I pushed her to give Super Pollo a try. Before going, I told her that I knew what she would say before we even ate, because it is what she has said at every Peruvian chicken joint not called "El Pollo Rico": "it's good, but it's not El Pollo Rico." She promised an open mind. Five minutes into our meal of a whole chicken (we always eat half at the restaurant and save the rest for chicken salads the next day), spinach, yucca fries and sodas, I asked her what she thought. Her eyes got big, her lip quavered a bit, and the words I never expected her, the EPR die-hard of all die-hards, to utter: "this is the best Peruvian chicken I've ever had. And it isn't close." I can only surmise why she reacted this way, as the rest of her comments were drowned out by slurps, chews, and even a belch as she dug back into her delicious meal. For me, it is the perfectly cooked chicken with incredibly good skin (EPR's skin leaves something to be desired) and that fact that rather than getting all the flavor into the breast through brining our chicken had a delicious spice rub applied under the skin pre-cooking. The meat was perfect, although even with a dry spot or two as others have noted can occur I still would rank it better than EPR simply because that soggy fake-juicy taste they have reminds me a little more of a Costco chicken than a truly succulent bird. As for the sides, they were very strong but they ultimately cost the fifth star. You other reviewers who rated the sides so highly are probably scratching your head, so let me explain--the spinach was on the tepid side, and we wanted it hot. The yucca fries, while crispy, were a bit cold as well. Maybe it was the temperature outside that had my thermometer in the car registering a reading of "witch's teat" combined with a glass-walled restaurant, but they were a bit cold. Tasty to be sure, but if you're going to serve cold sides you're going to lose a point. Not that it will keep me from coming back, mind you. This place is *the* place for Peruvian chicken as far as I'm concerned. read more

This is a much cleaner and newer version of the one by the mall. They have to be like only 2 miles apart. I come here decently regularly and it really feels like a place I'd want to sit and eat at. I typically just get carry out though. So if you don't know, The chicken is AWESOME!!!! Like really really awesome. Portions and prices are good. The sides are hit and miss, usually hit. Staff is friendly and the area is nice and convenient. This location unlike the other down the street seems very clean and new. It feel like an nice fast food chain like.......Ok, no idea which chains are known for always being clean maybe a pot belly's? I finally found it. The best Peruvian chicken in town. It's now made it into my regular meal rotation. I'd happily walk here from Ballston metro to eat, even though I no longer ride metro regularly. Their chicken is indeed super, their yucca is great, and their aji sauce is absolutely saucesome. Even their flan from the 'fridge is good. What's more, the location is relatively easy to get to and park at (unlike some others) and the decor is nice and clean. All this typing is making me hungry. read more

I went here with my roommates and we quickly all decided to order the chicken with two sides. I got a quarter chicken, white meat, with lentils and spinach. The chicken itself is great; there's a reason this place is known for its chicken. I loved the flavor of the skin, and the meat was juicy as far as white meat goes. My favorite part was definitely the green sauce though - it's a little spicy and complements the chicken amazingly! The sides were decent too. Nothing mindblowing but rounded out the menu nicely. I've been to the Super Pollo on Randolph St. before and I wasn't too impressed considering I compare everything to EPR now. Although the sauce was very good and spicy... Anyway, I came here because it was on the way home and pollo seemed like a great lunch option. The pollo at this place was actually better than the one I had at their other location. I like how I've got many options for sides (I got Yuca and Rice). The chicken was very satisfying with that great roast taste and a hint of herb flavoring. The sauce here is very good and spicy just like the other place. I would definitely come here if I can't make it to EPR. read more

Also you can't beat the servings you get for the price. Super Pollo is the Lord's way of enticing us to be good people as I'm sure it's served in heaven! I go here twice a week. For a little over eight bucks, you get a half chicken with two sides. Being of Pakistani decent, I especially love their sides of spinach, lentils, and chick peas. You get a blend of two worlds - peruvian chicken with south asian sides. If you're not feelin' the chicken, try the fish. It's served whole and has plenty of flavor. Since the Super Pollo closed in Ballston, traffic has really picked up at this location. Hence, seating can be limited for a party over three. Parking is ample with overflow generally going to the grocery store across the street. If you want take out, you can get in and get out in five minutes! read more

Super Pollo is very good! I gave it 4 stars based on taste only. The place looks a little bit nasty. I don't think I would actually eat in there. Not sure what it is, just can't put my finger on it. We usually stop there an pick up takeout. The food is excellent. The chicken is moist and flavorful. I like the variety of sides they have. Yuca here is the best. It's the biggest, and chunkiest. I have eaten at other Peruvian chickent places and they cut very small pieces of yuca and fry the hell out of it. That is not the case here. I also like the dipping sauces better here. Bf and I were looking for a quick to-go dinner in the area. He chose Super Pollo. I wanted McDonald's. One sniff of Super Pollo's chicken and I knew I had made the wrong choice. Bf less-than-willingly allowed me a bite. I was hooked. Fast forward to a couple of months later when the same scenario presented itself. This time, I didn't hesitate to choose Super Pollo. You can feed a family of 4 on $20 here. The chicken is so flavorful, moist and undeniably the tastiest chicken I have ever eaten. Their sides are good too. The mashed potatoes are buttery and the yuca root fries are crispy on the outside, dense on the inside. Add their mayo/mustard sauce and the notoriously spicy green sauce and your belly will be happy in no time. read more
