I have the hardest time giving a bad review to a place with great friendly service. I really enjoy it when someone is authentic and goes out of their way to make my experience pleasant, but if the food doesn't work for me... well, I know where my priorities are when I am going out to eat.
I visited at 11:30 on a Sunday morning, and the woman at the counter seemed surprised that I was there. It took me a minute to get her to understand I wanted to eat. After I looked at the menu, I ordered my standard small bowl of round steak pho, and decided to go with a Vietnamese coffee as well.
The woman seemed surprised that I was ordering Pho (even though the place is called Super Pho Restaurant, and I was sitting directly beneath their neon Pho sign) for reasons I don't understand. Because it was just before noon on a Sunday? Have I so become accustomed to Portland living that I've forgotten Salem's rules of now eating lunch on Sunday?
The pho arrived quickly, and smelled pretty good, but it didn't take me long to notice that the meat was fatty and the curly rounded ends that tend me mean they've just run out of steak. I suppose they might not have had a chance to stock back up, and I just got whatever was left.
Their selection of condiments wasn't quite what I was accustomed to... they didn't have the chili paste that I've seen at every pho place I've ever eaten, although they did have a new sort of chipotle smelling paste that was pretty spicy and worked as a substitute.
The pho itself was meh. The broth wasn't particularly rich or hearty, almost like a low-salt kind of broth. Maybe they don't use MSG or something, maybe it's just a different style of pho. I just didn't care for it, especially with the fatty and tough cuts of meat.
The espresso with condensed milk was delicious. Very delicious. I really enjoyed it despite the fact that I had asked for it hot, and it was served on ice. It was the highlight of the food.
The atmosphere of the business was pretty nice, very clean and obviously well cared for. As mentioned, the lady working there was super friendly and welcoming. I'm not too worried when something like the coffee mix-up happens, it's a standard landmine when dealing with new places and foreign food. But if a business sells pho, they probably ought to have a staple pho dish available when they open their doors. It's not like I was there at eight in the morning...
I suppose I might give this place another try, since they are so close to my parent's house and I really did like the lady working there... but I am not very optimistic. I couldn't finish my pho and really didn't have any enthusiasm for it. Which is a shame. Salem needs a good pho spot. read more
