Top Discount is a small speciality French/European grocery store that offers mostly shelf stable foods and specialty products for the home. You can find lots of imported snacks, chips, candies, beverages, cereals and household supplies like cleaning products, detergents, body care, soaps, lotions and the like - all from France for the most part. These are the type of items that are very hard to find elsewhere and normally not sold at your regular grocery store. With the large community of French ex-pats and other European migrants in Quebec, Top Discount offers a little taste from home. I stocked up on a few body washes from brands like Dop or Cottage (not sold in Canada normally), made in France Lays chips, Haribo gummy candy and special bbq sauces. The prices are very affordable and the products are unique and fun. I am not from Europe but appreciate the variety and being introduced to new brands. Note that Top Discount has a partnership with Carrefour which is one of the largest grocery chains in Europe so they also sell many Carrefour house branded items at very cheap prices. This Laval location has the best selection, I went on opening day and compared to another Top Discount store I went to in Brossard, this new location is bigger and better. The guy who manages the meats asked what my plans for the meat were and when I told him it was for sausage he had plenty of helpful advice. There were lot's of pork shoulders to pick from, so no waiting 24 to 48hrs like with some butchers and they will even ground up the meat for you if you ask saving you that first step. Can't see myself going anywhere else from now on.. Now that summer is coming fast I'm looking forward to buying there again so I can make some pulled pork and bratwurst sausages.

If you want to do an entire list of groceries you'll be disappointed. They're continually behind on fresh items when I drop by at 9am. The minced meat is from yesterday, there's rarely any fresh bread in many of their shelves and the fruits aren't fresh. The fruit flies are plentiful in the produce area. All in all, I'm apprehensive buying anything that's not imported or packaged somewhere else.

The worst rib steaks I ever bought. I tried to return the rest on July 29. ( I rarely return anything) The CSR refused the return citing first a 7 day return policy and then changing that to a 3 day return policy on meat etc. My understanding from their printed (French only) sheet pinned on the wall, was that acceptance of the return was discretionary. There is very poor customer service at this store and the quality of their beef is extremely low.

Management should investigate and warn this employee before he gets caught by government inspectors!

The Long Version: My husband and I love Farmers' Markets, so while planning our trip to Laval, I marked Marché Public 440 as one of the places for us to check out. We went in May so the outdoors section was open. I doubt it's open year-round, like the indoors section. The outdoors section had lots of affordably priced fruits and vegetables. We ended up getting 5 containers of blackberries for $1 each. We also got 2 packs of baby cucumbers. Each pack had 6 cucumbers and they were $2 each or 2 packs for $3. The indoors section is significantly pricier, but they have gourmet items. They had expensive cuts of meats, gourmet cheeses and artisan chocolates.
