Their ground beef carries a flavour of lamb. Such a flavour points to a deeper issue. Perhaps the grinder is not being properly cleaned. Perhaps different meats are inadvertently mixed. Either way, it raises questions about the culture of the establishment. There are many employees. Are they properly supervised? Is negligence tolerated? I cannot say. But none of this inspires confidence, and I am profoundly disappointed. read more

My mother and I stumbled upon this small-ish gourmet food store while doing some errands on Monkland. We grabbed a small shopping cart by the entrance and went up, then down, the two main aisles running the length of the store, from front to back. First the pluses: they have beautiful foods here, ranging from ready-made meals, to unique and hard-to-find jars of condiments, to exquisite meats in the rear butchery section, to all sorts of sausages and rare cheeses and beautiful crackers and breads. The prices seemed on a par with those at the Metro store where my folks shop (i.e., rather pricey but some decent specials, and some items were actually less than at Metro. We got some fingerling potatoes for $2.50 for a good amount, and they were all beautiful and already packaged. I checked out the green beans and other veggies, too. They're all already packaged and perfect. No browning, no wilting. All perfect. And they all cost the same as at Metro). We bought a vegetable quiche for $13. It's a decent size, for about 6 people. They had a great assortment of quiches and tarts and pies. When we heated up the quiche for lunch later, we both admitted, it was one of the best quiches we had ever had: they didn't scrimp on vegetables, and the cheese and eggs and crust were all so delicate, and you can taste the butteriness - it was wonderful. Truly high quality, and you can taste it. Now for the downsides: the circulation plan of this store is horrid. Even if you were the only person in the store, the two main aisles are super narrow, and if even one employee is stocking the shelves, the aisle is impassable. When we were there (Saturday at 11:30 am), the place was bustling with people and we seriously could barely move. And a few employees WERE stocking the ready-made meal fridge, and there was no way we could access it, to see what was available. We waited 3-4 minutes and it was impossible. So we ended up getting the quiche around the other side of this fridge, and it all worked out (as the quiche was great), but it would've been nice to see what meals were available. If you are claustrophobic, seriously avoid this place or only visit immediately when they open. Also, - and this is a pet peeve of mine, - the cashier was aloof and, at best, impersonal. He barely looked up at us. He never smiled, or said "thank you", or even talked to us, other than just saying what the total bill was. Very unfriendly. Didn't get the feeling of the business caring about us at all. read more

My husband and I went there last week to order our Christmas turkey. The pleasant, bilingual staff were very helpful with suggestions for guest numbers, side dishes, etc. We were especially happy to see that the store has doubled in size since we last visited. Squeezing among the crowds had been our only complaint. Well, there's also the prices, but they are in line with the upscale food offerings. Products available elsewhere are priced reasonably; it's just the fancy things that cost more. The problem is, they are so good and soooo tempting! read more

Where else in Monkland village can you find such enticing cuts of beef and a cheese counter that constantly exceeds expectations? No where, that's where! It's always a pleasure to rub elbows with the foodies of Le Quartier, it being a cozy little shop where bumping off your neighbours is a genteel game of excuse me's & pardonez moi svp. This is a great little market/store. It's always clean, even luxurious feeling. They cater, in my opinion, to more of a high end crowd. The butcher is good, plenty of selection, but as an example, not where I would go to buy a pork shoulder, he's probably more than twice the price. I'm a fan, yet don't go often because of the prices. I've debated whether to put the place at 3 or 4 stars. My first thought is 4, but if I don't go unless I have to, I logically shouldn't rate them a 4. Fortunately for me the location of the store is about the 4th place I would stop on my way home so it is usually the last place I look when I a seeking out something specific. I love going there when I want to host a nice dinner and serve some of the best angus steak we have in Montreal. I thing I love about this place is you can have sliced prime rib in the cold cut section to make awesome sandwiches on baguette for lunch. Great selection of cheeses, meats and charcuteries, Their products are high end and expensive, but if you're not on a budget it's definitely worth shopping there. It's pretty small, but every item there is carefully picked and good quality. read more

This really is a gorgeous little market in the Monkland Village. They used to be on the other side of the street a few years back in a basement shop but they expanded to make this beautiful store. It's still a little small - there are ALWAYS people in there, but you'll be happy you went. The butcher shop in the back has AMAZING meat, the fresh produce is great, the baked goods are beautiful. A little more expensive than shopping at the grocery store but totally worth the few dollars more because you're getting what you pay for. read more

Truly disappointed in the lack of knowledge that most of the staff have. We tried to make an authentic dish and needed specific ingredients. The cheese counter could not tell us the difference between different cheese. The meat products looked delicious, however not as fresh as expected. I gave this place such a poor rating because we bought 2 beautiful looking (and not cheap) steaks. Grilled them to perfection (shout out to by husband:) )....... and threw them out half way, our jaws were tired from chewing!!!! This happens when beef isn't aged properly. Shame on them for such a butcher. We did buy some other items from the deli counter which were very good. But what good is a butcher is their steak is literally inedible. read more

This market is top notch! They have the best selection of food, especially their marinated meats. The flavor is amazing and great for a quick weeknight meal. They also have an extensive butcher counter and cheese counter as well as other prepared foods available for purchase. The staff is very friendly, and are happy to vacuum seal your food, which is great for keeping it fresh! I would highly recommend visiting this market! read more

I used to be a very regular customer at Maître for years and years. I loved this neighbourhood spot for its exceptional quality and variety of meats, seafood & imported goods. However, ever since the store entered new management, and the owner left the business to his son, I have found that a once wonderful family-owned business is now a place I never plan to return to. The new owner is arrogant, has drastically increased the prices of goods, all while decreasing the quality (particularly in fruits & vegetables). I hope the management team seriously considers going back to their old business model. Your customers are intelligent people who have noticed these deceitful shortcuts.
